Just watched it back. It didn't seem quite as frenetic and stressful as it did in the ground! Quite a few 'nearly' moments from Vardy, Tielemans and Barnes. With true match sharpness we'd have made more of situations in the second half. (Wolves will also be a different team if/when Jimenez gets back to speed.)

If you were comfortable with "Tenlemans", you had "Soumar-eight" available.  :P

Looked like he was holding the small of his back to me, not his hip.

It seemed an impact injury from being continually fouled from behind.

Yes, I read later that it was a back injury. Problem is that the function of the body is so integrated that any injury has a knock-on effect radiating through the body. If he has no repercussions and recovers quickly, then all well and good.

I listened to the commentary on RL yesterday. Apparently the ref (Pawson?) had a stinker - failing to give yellows out when they were necessary. Players like Maddison need protection from that kind of attention.

Thought the ref had a decent game.

Like I stated - I didn't see it, but the RL commentators were highly critical of his failure to penalise shirt-pulling in particular. I think it's high time sin bins were introduced for certain fouls. It would give refs an option to remove players who are resorting to foul play instead of competing fairly.

The refs are letting the game flow more this season by giving less fouls. I totally agree with the concept behind this as it aims to stop diving, simulation, etc..... However, this may result in more injuries as defenders will get away with making more aggressive challenges.

A good example of this is Fofana's horrendous injury. As the ref in that game let so many dangerous challenges go unpunished, both teams ended up challenging a lot harder and it probably contributed to the horror tackle on Fofana.

It will allow players like Maddison to get targeted even more this season.

...Pawson was poor, too much interpretations by referees, play to the rules!!!

Maddison may have fallen foul of some bad treatment  yesterday but he gets more than his fair share of cheap free kicks.

Cannot really use Maddison as a good example.

.. the usual thing with this is come the end of the season it will revert back to what is was!!!

The inconsistencies of referees are the problem.

The Fofana incident was a red card incident and if I recall the referee played on.

They fail to punish a yellow in the first minute but will punish in the last, it doesn't matter when it happens, it is still a yellow.

He does do the dirty work that goes unrecognised in fairness though. Case in point the FA Cup Final. That classic Tielemans goal? Everyone was quick to praise Thomas for the assist, but that move started because Perez scrapped to put his body in the way and win the ball back off James' pass. Almost looks like an accident when played back but entirely intentional.

Do I think he's as good at is as Okazaki was? No. But I do think he comes in for unreasonable flack on here when he doesn't put in a vintage performance in the final third. In a weird way, he feels like the new Matt Oakley - needs to score to get any credit off our fanbase, when he's still doing a decent (if not incredible) midfield job for the team's overall play in terms of being a needle in midfield and helping transition the play to attack further up the field.

EDIT - Fook me, it's just dawned on me that some people on here won't even remember the League One / Cardiff Playoff season days for the Oakley comparison. For the youngest here - he was to blame for everything before Wellens was. lol

Am I getting old? :frantics:

I think one of the reasons we signed Perez was because he had one of the highest stats in the league for winning the ball back in the final third.

BBC radio Leicester allowed to interview players again?

I noticed this after one of the friendlies or was it the charity shield? I don’t think there is any lingering issues between stringer and Leicester has he often mentions how well the look after him and the radio Leicester team. They even used their influence to get him a pitch side interview with Rodgers after the charity shield. I think it must be just a media/club decision to share the bbc 5 live interviews.

After last seasons desperate home form, particularly against so called weaker teams, I think a win on the opening day by whatever means was vital. Not the prettiest of performances, but a performance to build on.

And behind that is a directive from UEFA which, as you state, will discourage simulation but encourage thuggery. When foul play interrupts flowing football then something's amiss with the game.

They never seem to get the balance right. Deliberately pulling a shirt when you've been outsmarted deserves an automatic yellow. That affects the flow of the game with certainty.

Two things I'd try to stop - crowding the ref. and the stupid protestations accompanying an adverse decision. And, while I'm on the subject ;), why should managers have the right to chivvy the fourth official?

We have referees for a reason - because the players can't be trusted to 'play nicely'.

The game allows players to behave immaturely. Maybe the people running the game need to ask how that can be changed. The game's the thing.

You mean that, because he 'buys' fouls he doesn't deserve protection from deliberate foul play. Tricky one that.

'I'm not giving a nailed-on free kick to you this time because five minutes ago you dived'. Tricky.

Vardy also has a rep. for putting himself in positions where being fouled is inevitable. But he hasn't got the rep. Madders 'enjoys'.

All this shows just how difficult reffing is.

Now we have VAR, it's made getting to the correct decision that much easier. But some people don't like it because it interrupts the flow of the game.

I think Fofana's 'assassination' shows where the necessary direction needs to be. Once players learn that the ref. and VAR are the arbiters of what's allowed then maybe they'll start to desist with the conning and shirt-pulling, etc. and the flow of the game will be enhanced that way.

Or we could dispense with refs and turn the game into a free for all. Just saying .

Adama Traore is an Olympic sprinter, not a professional footballer. If Wolves want to evolve into a team that controls the possession and tempo of the game they're not gonna do it with Traore as one of their best players. He's a counter attacking player at his best. Also, If Traore is one of your best players then you aren't going anywhere fast.

...VAR has not stopped the cheating, diving or attempt to con referees!!!

Can we remove these elements from the game? We definitely can and the obvious place to start are with the referees.

The arbitrary way they run or should I say interpret the rules are where most of the problems are. They are inconsistent throughout and can easily be manipulated. The failure to check the onside pitchside screen for virtually all the games was shocking, as they were abdicating any responsibility in that instance.

If we went back to the incident where we did not receive a penalty because it was claimed the VAR operator looked at the wrong incident, had the referee made his way to the screen, he would have been aware that the incident he had asked to be reviewed, was not the one the VAR operative was reviewing.

As for Maddison, the ref needs to tell him to get up or book him for ungentlemanly conduct.

I recall Brian Clough instructed the referees to book his own players if the talked back to the Referee as they (his players) could not be doing their job if they were mouthing off to the referee.

  Someone needs to step up.

Best bit about the win for me was that we did it without Justin, Fofana, Evans & Castagne. We've also got Barnes to come back to full strength (very rusty decisions but that'll come), Maddison you'd imagine eventually will look like a PL footballer again. Daka yet to make his competitive debut.

So much strength in depth now. Our run of luck with injuries has been horrendous, if we can get the aforementioned back without losing any key players, i see no reason why we can't go far in a few competitions this year.

I keep watching it back - Ricardo’s touch to get past the two defenders for the goal is absolutely word class. He’s got absolutely no right to get past two defenders in that position - and don’t get me started on the finish.

I would hate Maddison if he didn’t play for us. He falls over all the time at the slightest contact. I wouldn’t give half of the free kicks he ‘buys’.

The other highlight for me was Youri's clever feint/dummy in the second half.

Seemed a bizarre move as well to play him on the left which effectively kills his pace because he always had to go back on his right foot.

Yeah the only times he looked vaguely threatening were when he came into the middle. Whenever he picked it up on the left he just ran in a straight line across the pitch and did nothing. I don't think he gets in the team when Neto and maybe even Podence are back fit.

It's because when he's on the right he just runs down a channel right into the corner. He then has to beat two players or whip an aimless cross in.

Playing him on the left means he can cut inside onto his right and run centrally at defenders. He's generally more effective doing that.
