don_danbury Posted 12 September 2021 Posted 12 September 2021 it doesnt compare. obviously a great achievement for her but it doesnt come close to the title win 1
Captain... Posted 12 September 2021 Posted 12 September 2021 If we include the qualifiers she played amazing tennis for 3 weeks and 9 games. We played amazing for 38 games and 9 months. The reason why the league is so much harder to win than a cup/knockout competition is that you have to maintain it over such a long period. 2
Webbo Posted 12 September 2021 Posted 12 September 2021 Now she's shown that American courts are nothing to be scared of, perhaps Prince Andrew will go? 4
Chester Dontlie Posted 12 September 2021 Posted 12 September 2021 It's not even a contest! Team sport with a whole long season to play vs individual sport and a short tournament. Also, she had a great Wimbledon run before the US open anyway (she wasn't a wild card or whatever it's called)... hardly a relegation candidate! 1

Had to break into my old man’s whisky to steady the nerves. It’s still all about performance under pressure whether it’s football or tennis. She’s basically a supermodel who happens to be articulate, intelligent & a world class tennis player. Yeah, ok..but apart from being a Supermodel, articulate, intelligent and a world class tennis player... She's got absolutely nothing going for her! 😉 2

Unabomber Posted 12 September 2021 Posted 12 September 2021 Vardy’s goal against liverpool that season was a better achievement let alone the actual bloody league title win! 1

When you look at past recent US Open female winners it kind of puts it in context. Winners like Bianca Andreescu who won it at 19 and has not done much past the first 2 rounds in any slam since. Try finding another Leicester to compare. To be fair to Andreescu, last year the tour was cancelled by covid. She didn't do much this year of course, then when the tours were starting again she caught covid herself and had to pull out of tournaments and disrupt her regime. She's still 21 and clearly going to be a good player in the future. 1

King of Gipsy Lane Posted 12 September 2021 Posted 12 September 2021 She was 10 times more likely to win that than we were to win the league 1
Wasyls Pec Deck Posted 12 September 2021 Posted 12 September 2021 (edited) It’s a silly comparison really. 9 games on tennis vs 38 games against 19 other teams who you play twice. I guess she had less margin for error, but we needed to be consistent over a longer period against established opposition and rely on 16 or so players having the season of their lives. And that’s not downplaying what she did at all. I watched it last night and it was brilliant. Edited 12 September 2021 by Wasyls Pec Deck
Guest TaggertvsWise Posted 12 September 2021 Posted 12 September 2021 I was hoping I wouldn’t see this thread but I knew I would. You can’t compare and quite frankly I don’t we should be as it’s ultimately trying to take the gloss off what is astonishing achievement from an incredible young lady.
ARM1968 Posted 12 September 2021 Posted 12 September 2021 Not even close. She’s done well bless her, but as good as the 5000/1. Nah, not a chance.
Spudulike Posted 12 September 2021 Posted 12 September 2021 I'm happy the media still refer to our season and make comparisons. Like measuring height with double-decker buses or areas of land by football pitches, LCFC have become the scale to measure sporting underdog achievements.
Free Falling Foxes Posted 12 September 2021 Posted 12 September 2021 I started playing tennis 12 years ago, so that'll be around the same time as this young lady. She seems to have progressed at a greater rate than I. I think I spotted the reason however, whilst watching her tremendous victory, between games you nibble at a banana. 1
Sly Posted 12 September 2021 Posted 12 September 2021 What did other bookmakers have is as going into the season? I assume we weren’t 5,000-1 with a lot of them!
Popular Post Freeman's Wharfer Posted 12 September 2021 Popular Post Posted 12 September 2021 The problem with this sort of stuff is that over time it will dilute the incredible nature of what that team achieved if not called out. It’s like when a Watford, Southampton or Aston Villa has had a good start (maybe 6 games) and it’s all “are they the next Leicester?”. Or when some no-mark player says their target has to be to win the league as Leicester did it and made everyone realise it was possible. It will never happen again. And it will never be matched for unlikely achievement. The bookies odds were a pretty good representation of that: no 5,000/1 shot had ever won anything and someone we know is dead (Elvis) being found alive was literally considered more likely… It was a freak achievement. A perfect storm of things that built up over several years. Something won across 38 games and 10 months in an environment where fair competition has been massively skewed by money. Raducanu’s achievement is commendable, brilliant, fantastic. But this is probably just a bursting on the scene of a player who will be a competitor in major tournaments moving forward. The LCFC team was not an unknown quantity. There was no Wayne Rooney or Leo Messi who happened to come through that season and take it by storm. It was something that no one can really explain, even to this day. I often look back and just think ‘wow’ and that’s 5 years on. That won’t happen for this US Open win in 2026, it’ll just be seen as the point she made it. 5
Tielemans63 Posted 12 September 2021 Posted 12 September 2021 LCFCs title win is the greatest sporting upset in our minds, others will think it's Raducanu's. It's all subjective so does it really matter? Delighted for Radacanu btw, so much to admire about that performance yesterday. Superb
