Systems come and go. Barnes will get plenty of game time this season.

Absolutely but players can get further in the mire, the longer they aren't playing or in a system that's not best suited. Maddison was never going to be out the team for long because whatever system is deployed there will likely be a ACM deployed but whilst we do OK in a back 3 then Barnes game time will be non existent, not even any minutes off the bench unless we need to go for broke which is never a great environment for a player trying to get back involved.

I think on reflection it’s better we’re not dependant on him, I’m not sure he’s completely over his injury as of yet

I got panned once for suggesting Barnes is a striker, but to me goalscoring is his thing. Yes we have Vardy, Daka and Iheanacho but JVs age and injuries will give him plenty of opportunities to show what he can do. He is similar in build to Lineker and just as quick so he has the physical attributes.

He needs to add a fair bit to his game to be a striker, just look at his output when he played in a 2 up top with Vardy in a 3-4-1-2 last Oct - Dec until Ndidi was back compared to hit output wide left from Dec - mid Feb when he got injured.

Genuine question for people putting Mendy in; why? If he's not registered for the PL or the EL what's the point in taking minutes away from other players who might need it.

3-4-1-2 seems to be our most solid set up . It gives us a stronger core. If Barnes wants to get back in I can only see it as one of the front two and  at the moment he is 4th in line.

I  believe 4 1 4 1/ 4 2 3 1 is still Rodgers preferred system and he'll revert back this at some point ie if form drops off using 3 4 1 2 and players return from injury who will improve us defensively playing 4 at the back (Wilf, Fofana, Justin).

He did this up until December last season, where he switched to 5 at the back in the league due to our injury crisis but played 4 1 4 1 in the Cups to give the likes of Barnes, Albrighton and Under game time. Once Ndidi came back and Barnes hit form in the cup games he reverted back to 4 1 4 1 December onwards until we had the next injury crisis in March.

He could take the same approach this season to keep some familiarity with 4 1 4 1/4 2 3 1 + giving Barnes & Lookman game time.

I'm not spending £15 and my Wednesday night to watch a back four of Bertrand Vestergaard Benkovic and Daley-Campbell get spanked by Brighton. I want us to win this cup.

Ward

Soyuncu

Vestergaard

Amartey

Thomas

KDH

Soumare

Albrighton

Barnes

Daka

Lookman

I would imagine a fair bit of rotation. Something like:

Ward

Thomas

Vestergaard

Soyuncu

Amartey

Castagne

Soumare

Tielemans

Barnes

Daka

Perez

I think it will be a tight game, depends what Brighton's bench is like. They will want to be full strength at Anfield on Saturday.

....would need to have Vestergaard central in the back three, with Soyuncu on the left!!!

Need to take Tielemans out of the team and KDH needs to have game time, he is not a natural cover but he needs to play. Lookman, Daka and Barnes upfront, we would have to drop Perez in the #10 spot in order to utilise him properly.

                        Ward

Amartey Vestegaard Benkovic Thomas

                 Mendy  Choudhury

Lookman          KDH                Barnes

                         Daka

...I really cannot see Benkovic getting game time while Rodgers is in charge!!!

Would like him to prove one way or another if he is a viable option for our Backline. He has looked sluggish and reactive in the U23s as opposed to being proactive in what he does. His bench position is probably a ploy to maintain some kind of value for him as it is something we can point to, as stating he is a member of the first team.

I forgot about KDH and Lookman to be fair. Depends if Tielemans will actually get a rest.

5-4-1 gives iheanacho and Maddison both a rest while giving our wingers a run out, as well as keeping momentum defensively with a back 5.

It’s an interesting nuance, isn’t it? Is there any point giving them time in a position/shape that we aren’t going to play, maybe? Is it better to give them time in a shape we are playing? 🤷

In answer to @TrentFox, I think @OadbyBlue has the answer. Keep a lot of the shape the same but move from two up front to one up front.

I certainly wouldn't try to shoehorn lookman and Barnes into the current shape as that ain't what they were bought for and flexibility is key for us.

IF some tactical wizz can point out why the above wouldn't work, then it is just back to 4-2-3-1 as our other option, but as we have been turd with 4atb this season I feel that the above alternative allows us to still utilise barnes and lookman (as they did look promising imo, just that the rest of the team looked pretty shit alongside them.)

it would be him or Hamza for me and Hamza lost the coin flip in my head, no other reason

I think youve got the front 5 right the rest needs fixing.

Daley Campball in for Marc. Id probably give big dan the nod instead of bertrand as well.  The last thing he needs is minutes in an unfamiliar position.

I would be curious to see how lookman looks in the number 10 role though.  I wonder if he has that in his locker.

Personally I think we should give hamza minutes to keep his value up if anything. If he can get 5 games in by january 31st we could get a nice cheque form newcastle.

I think the only person in the world of football interested in getting Hamza was Steve Bruce so that ship might have sailed although I bet he could improve that $hite Norwich side

When will the Vichai statue be erected outside the stadium?

Sorry to go off-topic a bit, but has the investigation into the tragedy finished?

Anyone remember a horrible League Cup tie against Brighton at Filbert Street in 1994? It was very near the end of Brian Little's reign and we were a Premier League side and they were 3rd tier I think. They beat us 2-0 even though they had Jimmy Case sent off who was over 40 years old at the time. As cup defeats go, that one ranks with Harlow Town, Exeter City, Wycombe Wanderers and Newport County.

I’m sure they scored an absolute screamer as well if my memory serves me right
