Interview with Gelson Fernandes (google translate)

-Rennes will face Leicester in the round of 16, what does that mean to you?

It's a great meeting! They are two nice clubs, two clubs which have worked very well, belong to families, father and son. Leicester and Rennes are two clubs that have similarities.

-You went to Leicester in 2011, what was your experience?

When I get there, King Power had just taken over the club a few months before. It is a club that has been able to cross the levels, and grow. They immediately tried to improve the training conditions. The training center was old. They made arrangements, asked what upgrades could be given, what machines could be brought in to ensure that there were the best conditions for the players. They knew how to do well. It is a club that has been able to build infrastructure, as Stade Rennes was able to do at La Piverdière.

-Have you found the same enthusiasm as at Manchester City where you played previously (2007-2009)?

Maybe a little less than Manchester City, but yes there is enthusiasm. It is a working-class city, a city which has a very large European rugby club. There is this competition there, but there is a real place for football. The football club has grown alongside the giant that is the rugby club. They operated a naming and an expansion with the King Power Stadium, there is a great atmosphere. Before signing, I had attended the Real Madrid - Leicester friendly match, it was a big big atmosphere.

- What is the difference between the Gelson Fernandes who arrived in Leicester in 2011 and the one who arrived at Stade Rennes in 2014?

I was much more mature when I arrived at Stade Rennes, I had much more experience, life. I arrived at Stade Rennes as an experienced player with experience behind me, and already experience in France. It was easier.

-These two clubs have changed compared to when you were there…

I think Rennes haven't changed too much, they have additional resources. We were in a period of austerity where we had to be careful, with a salary cap imposed by the president (René) Ruello. Then they won a title, took part in European competitions, but I don't think the facilities have changed much. The passion of the Pinaults remains the same. Leicester have changed more than Rennes have changed. Leicester is a beautiful mid-table club, even top of the table in England, which has structured itself well. Stade Rennes is a top club, a very good French club.

- According to you, how is this meeting shaping up?

I am more for Rennes because I spent more years there. My tendency is a victory for Stade Rennais. These two teams are equal sportingly, they are close to each other.

- A prediction?

No, but a Rennes qualification.

Ha, I was at that preseason friendly, real Madrid, we scored against them I'm sure, brilliant gesture by our then new owners. I remember hearing it cost us over a million to get that friendly, don't know if that's a fact or not.

With many of us not following Ligue 1 closely, it has been a treat getting your insights on Stade Rennais.  Also appreciate the respectful way you communicate them.

...two teams developing on the same lines!!!

Building a team that is part of the community and not rushing the project.

Another hard fought win here even if ugly would breed so much confidence. Seem to have a bit of momentum of late, let's see how far we can carry it to the end of the season

No doubt there will be RCK members present in the away end, but not in an "official" capacity... Unfortunately a mix of Brexit, French bureaucracy (it can take several months to get a new passport in France these days), a late draw only a fortnight before the game, and the fact you can travel everywhere else in the EU with a Carte d'Identite mean that a lot of people didn't anticipate they would have to get a passport.

Saw Maddison yesterday as I drove past the training ground, he was turning in to it, in his blue car with his white hat on :)

Hopefully means he will be fit for Thursday.

Just watched a the Rennes back catalogue of highlights for this year and they look like a very tough side.

Think we'll struggle against especially this Laborde guy, bullet headers, a poor man's Steve Howard but still, frightening.

I feel confident, I think we will destroy them.

Going for a 1-1.

I’ve been to a couple of away games recently and tried to sing song to our latest Europe song. But everyone sounds like they mumble the last couple of lines, and I gave up trying. So can anyone type the words in here so I can belt it and not look like a twat… thanks.

Haha ok thanks. Not sure how or why I couldn’t make out the last 2 lines. Maybe I’m going deaf!

Winning this one would feel like we’ve properly turned a corner.

A tricky game game but I still believe that at our best we’d crush these.

Soyuncu looks to have regained some confidence. Which I think makes all of the difference

Why have we missed out the definite article?

We’re based in Leicestershire not Yorkshire
