I think unfortunately the fact we're after European football and our resources being relatively meagre compared to the competition mean we see that profile of player as a gamble we can't afford, which is a shame.

I'm not sure we quite need the overhaul that was suggested, though we do need some new blood and as was rightly pointed out earlier in the thread a lot of our better signings are our earlier ones. Nothing even sounds close. 1

Tavares would have been better staying here in all honesty, rather than not playing for Porto B. Player development is a funny thing. KDH wasn’t exactly a standout performer at a younger age for example. Lots of talented younger players never make that next step. Billy Kee was phenomenal within our youth system is another example. James Wesolowski was herald as a future international star after a performance against Japan at the 2005 Youth World Cup. Outside of Leicester, you have Sonny Pike, Johan Vonlanthen, Elvir Baljić, Caio Ribeiro, Sergio Santamaría, Wayne Harrison, Gerard López, Sebastian Deisler, Adaílton, Denílson, Yannick M’Villa or Freddy Adu. Amazing prospects, ultra hyped by the football manager and computer stats at younger levels that never made the transition. 4

Chelsea have had about a million young lads out on loan who were hyped as the next big thing and never made it - Josh McEachran jumps out straight away.

Dubravka has rightly lost his place in the Newcastle side on a number of occassions. I think he's one of those Match of the Day players who neutrals see in highlights and think ooooh, but in reality has a lot of mistakes in him. I don't think he'll be able to argue that Pope comes in as number 1, but strikes me as the sort of keeper who will give it a good fight for at least a season! It gives Newcastle the great option to chop and change when one of them does hit a rough patch too. It's what I hope we do with Iversen next season, meaning if one makes a mistake it's straight into net for the other one...
