Yeah maybe your right im not sure why I perceived it, I think the academy players coming through maybe give that impression.  I just like the model of buying very young player from the championship. Palace have bought 3 teenagers from there daily recently at good prices that are all pretty exciting. Rodgers has only even signed 1 teenager for the first team I believe In forfana and it has worked perfectly. So shame we don’t do it more.

Yeah I do as well. I think unfortunately the fact we're after European football and our resources being relatively meagre compared to the competition mean we see that profile of player as a gamble we can't afford, which is a shame.

It’s not even like they need him. They’ve already got Olise, Eze, Zaha and Ayew who can all play out wide.

Not to mention how ridiculously talented Jesurun Rak-Sakyi is. He will be unreal next season.

Crystal Palace picking up yet another young talent that would be ideal for us.

They’ve also been linked with Chris Richards & Cheick Doucoure.

How depressing.

Didn't you say the same about Sidnei Tavares?

Football is not that black and white.

I'm not quite in pure panic mode yet but my gut feeling is it's not going to be a great summer. I'm not sure we quite need the overhaul that was suggested, though we do need some new blood and as was rightly pointed out earlier in the thread a lot of our better signings are our earlier ones.

Nothing even sounds close.

Tavares would have been better staying here in all honesty, rather than not playing for Porto B.

Player development is a funny thing.

KDH wasn’t exactly a standout performer  at a younger age for example. Lots of talented younger players never make that next step.

Billy Kee was phenomenal within our youth system is another example.

James Wesolowski was herald as a future international star after a performance against Japan at the 2005 Youth World Cup.

Outside of Leicester, you have Sonny Pike, Johan Vonlanthen, Elvir Baljić, Caio Ribeiro, Sergio Santamaría, Wayne Harrison, Gerard López, Sebastian Deisler, Adaílton, Denílson, Yannick M’Villa or Freddy Adu. Amazing prospects, ultra hyped by the football manager and computer stats at younger levels that never made the transition.

Your post is spot on mate.

Chelsea have had about a million young lads out on loan who were hyped as the next big thing and never made it - Josh McEachran jumps out straight away.

He's only played England U20's so far. He absolutely annihilated our U23's last season. Think he scored twice and set 4 up or something daft.

Nick Pope undergoing his Newcastle medical today. £10m

Good signing on paper but im not sure he's better than Dubravka. How do you keep them both happy?

The Newcastle fans I've chatted with are pretty convinced Pope is better.

Dubravka has rightly lost his place in the Newcastle side on a number of occassions. I think he's one of those Match of the Day players who neutrals see in highlights and think ooooh, but in reality has a lot of mistakes in him.

I don't think he'll be able to argue that Pope comes in as number 1, but strikes me as the sort of keeper who will give it a good fight for at least a season!

It gives Newcastle the great option to chop and change when one of them does hit a rough patch too.

It's what I hope we do with Iversen next season, meaning if one makes a mistake it's straight into net for the other one...

I don't think there's any chance Kasper gets dropped for Iversen under any circumstance.

Dubravka is a good keeper, but he's also had a fair number of injuries for a goalie in recent years.  Popes missed 4 games in the last 3 seasons.

I agree. I was thinking earlier if Maddison has a good season but fails to make the World Cup there could be scope to let him go in January for silly money with the WC being an influence.

My major concern at present is Rodgers has been banging on about a refresh since Forest fetched our pants down in the FA cup. It obviously is not happening, so an already irritated Rodgers (in my opinion he spent most of his interviews sounding annoyed) is going to be extremely pissed come Brentford when Lookman is probably our only signing.

This head of recruitment issue isn’t helping either, and the lack of clarity regarding Youri isn’t too.

Not sure what next season looks like, we can’t afford to have a pissed off manager, and several want away players even more pissed off because they haven’t been able to leave.

Things are on a knifes edge at the moment, just an odd feeling about it all. I’m not even looking forward to this season in all honesty… but we will see.

If we stay healthy, I don’t think the squad needs a huge overhaul to compete— that constant refrain from Rodgers really seems to  be one of his self-preservation tactics.

Pope reminds me a bit of Joe Hart. Let’s see how he gets on when he’s got to play with the ball at his feet.

Posted

He's going to Newcastle. We don't really know if using his feet is much of a prerequisite yet. Except for y'know, moving and stopping him from falling over.

If the club have high hope for Iversen, why would we buy another keeper?

Pope is 30, if Iversen continues to develop at 24 he could be our number one for years!

There's been some murmurings we are open to selling Iversen.
