Who is responsible for the "mess" on and off the pitch?

I am wondering how we have ended up in such a muddle and mess in relation to the players´ contracts, salaries etc.?

 

Who is responsible and why do failures seem to have no consequences?

 

 

Long and expensive contracts - Rudkin?

 

8-10 contracts expiring simultaneously 2023 - Rudkin?

 

Abysmal defending set pieces - Touré and Stowell?

 

Prolongation of stadium expansion - ??

 

Not reaching Europe or CL - Rodgers + players (partly injury issues in 2021/22 but the 2 seasons prior to this was down to the players that now want out to get European football.......

 

Despite all the above I have seen no one being fired or any changes to the structure/organization of the club (apart from a new doc and at some point a new DF) if I´m not mistaken.

 

In other organizations failures of this magnitude would have had immediate consequences but we seem just to be ambling along.

 

I wonder if Top has taken "the eye of the ball" as we seem in a stalemate and the drive we had seems to have gone a bit.

Can I personally thank you for taking up this challenge of finding individuals to blame.

 

When you have the list, what's the next step - are you going to go to Top with a plan of what consequences you think are appropriate for each failure and ask him carry them out for you?

Maybe because it’s not nearly as bad as half the doom mongers make out. You’d never believe it, but we are currently having the most successful period in the clubs history!

Since we returned to tue top flight we’ve won the league, the FA Cup, played in Europe more times than the combined amount of times we have in the history of the club.

Sold the most expense defender in world football. Made way more than we’ve lost on transfers. Got a brand new state of the art training ground and have plans in place for a stadium expansion as well as seeing the biggest away win in Premier League history, being consistently one of the highest scorers in the league and seeing some of the best players in the clubs history at the same time.

But yeah, we didn’t sign anyone ans a couple of contracts are up next year.

Players sign contracts and inevitably these contracts have an "expiry" date. You either extend them or not. There's no mess. Football wages are through the roof everywhere. What would you expect from a PL team, have League 1 wages? The board is trying to keep things tidy, all decisions have a risk factor.

But mess is definitely the word I'd use for our current situation. Our identification of young talent is definitely a strength of the club and something we can be proud of but our squad management off the pitch is very poor. 

 

Complaining because we've not signed a Brazilian right wing wonder kid in every transfer window would be over the top. Using the word "mess" and being upset because it's just over a week before the season starts and we're the only club in Europe's top seven leagues that hasn't managed to improve their squad and we aren't really able to because we've far too many overpaid, redundant assets on our books is just accurate. 

 

I don't like to use the term "happy clapper" but if you're still digging in your heels and denying that there's a fairly significant problem unfolding here then either the phrase applies to you or you just enjoy arguing on the Internet for the sakes of doing so. 

 

And regards the original post, the answer is ultimately Jon Rudkin. This is literally the bread and butter of his job, the definition of his role is to manage the squad at Leicester City, to oversee signings, to have the final say on who comes in, who we release, what contracts are offered, etc. That's what a Director of Football does. 

 

The whole point of separating the roles of DOF and head coach is that these days, with head coaches never really lasting very long, if left to their own devices in the transfer market they would tend towards short termism and quick fixes to try and improve their own immediate situation. I mean, would we have wanted Claude Puel to have dictated the future of Jamie Vardy at the club? 

 

By handing the reigns to a specialist director in charge of taking care of the squad in the best interests of the club, you're supposed to be letting a guy sit back with a more long term scope and plan out the development of a well rounded and balanced squad that protects the future of the team. 

 

To that end, there's always been questions asked of Rudkin and currently they're not being answered. Now with any luck, he'll work to navigate through it and we'll get back on track. I'm absolutely not advocating we call for his head. If you accept he's responsible for causing the current situation then you also have to accept he gets responsibility for building a squad that won the Premier League and FA Cup on a shoestring budget. 

 

But regardless, this is definitely "a mess." In fact, I'd say that word is fairly mild.

Let's have some kind of perspective here. This club is enjoying the best era in its history. We still have 1st team players since 2015-16. The board all these years is trying to keep a fine balance in every department of the club. We had the absolute shock of the tragic death of the beloved owner and we came up strong and united. Talking about united, this is a proper mess of a club, the Manchester one. Not us.
