Newport (H) Carabao Cup - Tues 8th Nov - Pre-Match Thread

Granted, this cup could be our way into Europe.  But if either Jonny or Cags can play, I'm not risking Faes against Newport.

The one player we cannot afford to lose to a challenge from some would-be League Two hero.

It's really a shame we have Ben Nelson riding a bench on loan. This would have been perfect for him.

Minutes off the bench for Braybrooke Soumare Mendy & Maswanishe. Ideally!

So a striker and CM on the wings instead of the actual winger from the u23s? :D

Iversen

Castagne

Soy

Evans

Thomas

Braybrooke

Praet

Albrighton

Kelechi

Maswanhise

Vardy

Look to bring on Alves and Wormleighton on in the 2nd half.

Well two can play at that game old bean 😂

So a guy with a hamstring injury at CB, a start for a CM with literally not a minute of senior football behind him and no DM at all?!?

All opinions @filbertway!

Oh bloody hell, which one of the 2 cb's is crocked? I'd heard Evans was back fit and assumed Soy was just dropped lol

Definitely would start Braybrooke as he's better than Newports level already. If he's not ready to start in this game then he might as well pack it in and become a shoe shine, or whatever the kids are doing these days.

I really don't think we need a destroyer DM against Newport County either. Braybrooke plays fairly deep for the development team and Praet has no problem getting around the pitch.

As you say all about opinions. As someone who just wants to be entertained, my preferred line ups would tend more towards 8 goal thrillers rather than resolute performances :D

Anyone know if they’re back doing birthday shout outs?
My Aunt Brendan Nin is celebrating her 65th on Tuesday.

You have an aunt called Brendan?

Guessing this is an aussie thing 🤔

But hold on, aren't all aussie women called Marleen, Raeleen, Darleen or Mabeleen?

(and Kylie of course). 😐

So you're saying pick the same team as the Everton win but make a point of only dropping Ward who made some top saves?

Not too big on the psychology of singling a man out and destroying his newly built confidence l would suggest!

By all means give Iverson a run out but not to make an invalid point!

It would be 8 or 9 changes for me and I'd still expect 3-4-5 nil.

What are you talking about, I’m not making a point of dropping Ward,  it’s quite common for teams to rotate goalkeepers in domestic cups.

There probably will be wholesale changes but I would go as strong as possible.

Iversen will 100% play and Ward will feel absolutely fine with that…

I’m excited about seeing Braybrooke, and various ITKs have confirmed we’ll see Braybrooke, so I guess we’ll see no Braybrooke. I’ll try to tempt fate anyway: the thing I hate about Brendan, and the thing that proves he’s the wrong man for the job, not only for our club, but for any club, is his disregard for the academy, and I’ve been saying this for ages, and by him not playing him only proves me right and correct and wise and Brendan a fraud. There. Take your best shot.

OK - I'll take a shot.

People often call for youngsters and academy players to play when the vast majority will ultimately leave the club and end up playing in the lower leagues. You see this often when people pick out this or that player - who then can't get a game when on loan to a 4th division side. Everyone remembers the one Calvin Bassey, but forgets the ten Vontae Daley-Campbells.

There is also the issue of fitness and form. Some of the players around the squad may suddenly find they are required to cover for injured players. These games are good for ensuring they're ready by a having a competitive game under their belts: Iversen, Thomas, Soyuncu, Evans, Albrighton, N'didi, Praet, Perez and Iheanacho are all players that need minutes.

I'm just being devil's advocate here and don't know the academy players like some do. Is anyone really confident that one of them has the potential to be the next KDH, Thomas or Barnes? If they are then why isn't that player already loaned out and doing what Barnes did at West Brom or KDH at Luton?

Braybrooke at the very least should have been given a chance earlier than now. Captaining his youth group for England, and destroying his competition at that level. Wormleighton has been overlooked also, although less egregious maybe.

And don't get us started on why some players haven't gotten loaned out, that will open up a whole other can of worms hahaha!

Edit: seeing as Wormleighton is injured, I'd ideally like to see Maswanhise and Braybrooke starting with the rest of the places getting mostly filled by squad players. Something like

Maswanhise Iheanacho Perez

Braybrooke Ndidi Praet

Thomas Soyuncu Evans/Vesty  Castagne

Iversen

If its too much to start Braybrooke, it wouldn't be difficult to sub Dewsbury-Hall or Soumare off for him instead.

Think our main priority is West Ham on Saturday, I would be giving minutes to players who have been sat on the bench, rest Youri, Maddison, KDH, Barnes, Daka, Wout Faes,  Castagne.

Justin needs more game time if he is hopeful on getting on the plane to Qatar could be a possibility. When is Ricardo back, also when is glass legs Bertrand back ideal would play Ndidi in defence resting Armarty. Should have enough to beat these, then again we thought this a few years back.....

Maswanhise has to play - looking at some of these suggested XIs without Barnes shows up how poor our squad building has been.

We’ve got three first team wide players and only one of them can run. Maswanhise deserves a chance, 5 goals in 742 minutes for the (badly performing) u21s so far this season.

I am  Brendan In at the moment, but the team is less than a week away from the World Cup break. I doubt match fitness and getting ready to cover an injury is an issue for this game.

We need to win it is the only issue: Losing to a League 2 side is not the momentum we want going into the break.
