Maddison and any other player in need of minutes should have been given a chance because they need to be ready if called upon later in the tournament.

Maddison is a game changer, surprised he isn’t in. Got to say if it is personal you need to be professional and understand what he could bring. Southgate is just lucky he has a enough talent to cover it

I did say he named him as an attacker so that he’d be about 6th/7th choice in the front line.

 

If he’d been named as a midfielder it would have been much harder for him to argue

As a manager you utilise every player in the squad as you don't know what might happen with injuries, bans etc. At least see what Madders can offer.

Against Senegal…. Who have all but given up. Ideal opportunity to try a few different ideas. 
 

Because when he comes up against better teams he will fall into the trap of making the same choices… rather than reacting to what is happening on the pitch.

Every Coach uses players they trust. That’s why Grealish didn’t get minutes at the last tournament. That’s life.
