Find this one bizarre in all honesty.

I’ve banged on about Salzburg a lot over the past year, but this lad has hardly featured for them when I’ve watched them in the Champions League.

He’s been 4th choice in their centre back pecking order.

Also had two injury spells in the past two seasons.

I guess the scouting team must have seen something in him during his games in the Austrian Bundesliga.

He’ll probably replace Soyuncu or Vestergaard rather than Amartey.

I've been looking in to any links with Southampton from when he was playing in Poland but can't find anything. I suspect this is a low key punt on a player who was heralded as the best young Polish defender to come out of their domestic league in years.

His ball carrying and long range passing is off the scale too, clearly looking for that capabilities that we've lost in Fofana. Polish football not high calibre but goals and assists aplenty from him, like a certain Anel Ahmedhodzic.

He's played in a back 3 for Poland once against Russia. Play him like that for us and play Kel and one other up front. Our best chance of staying up is to give Kel a run of games and hope he goes on a scoring spree.

and we all forget that we ever wanted a winger?

I think BR will go 352 when we sign another centre half, think you could be right

Well we've been looking for 5 years. Will we ever find the right one?

I am seeing a punt on a future prospect with a lack of games and some injuries. Not a starting CB who can come straight in and make a huge difference for us.

I would much prefer us to be signing an established CB who has been playing week in week out

Ben Mee would have been ideal for us last summer on a free.

Think there’s a lot to like about this lad when you watch him. Get the impression his career has stalled somewhat at Salzburg after seemingly bursting on the scene in Poland a few years back - he’s still only 22.

This is a relatively risk free punt from us if it’s under 12/15m and no wild wages. Tall, strong, wide range of passing and solid.

Our last tatted polish centre half didn’t do too bad either.

The thing that stands out above everything else is his performance in defensive duels.

Going off last season he won 77% of his defensive duels in all competitions. In the Austrian Bundesliga he played less games than the likes of Bernardo, Solet & Wober, but ranked 2nd in defensive duels won in the whole of the Austrian Bundesliga.

His passing ability looks mediocre in all honesty, especially in terms of successful forward passes & progressive passes.

Just going off the general vibe from Polish fans, injuries have certainly derailed his progression at Salzburg. For a club that prides itself on youth, their better talents always seem to go for anything between the £15-£30 million bracket. Willing to let Piatowski go on the cheap, not all that long after signing him is a red flag imo. Unless his move is a loan and they still see something in him 🤷‍♂️

People bleeting on about wanting an established player, have you A) forgotten the last "established" Centre back we signed? And B) have you forgotten that our best signings have all been relative unknowns.

The clamour for Premier league "proven" players is bizarre, especially given our current horrendous wage bill, which is full of "proven" premier league players who aren't winning us games.

Looks like a 'preparing for the Championship' signing and not a 'staying in the Premier League' signing to me. Obviously it's in a different position but Patson Daka tore up the Austrian League and has struggled to adapt to PL football, this guy can't get into the team at Salzburg?

I hope I'm made to look foolish but this looks like a desperate gamble on the cheap. I'd be amazed if he comes in and makes a difference this season.

Isn't there a middle ground, though ie signing a promising young player playing regularly in a lesser league? This guy seems to have played very few games at any level, which is what worries me about him. It's a massive gamble to take a player who has played a few games in the Austrian league and throw them into a PL relegation battle in a key position like CB.

There could be a middle ground, but then if there's a player such as that you'd assume their team probably wouldn't want to get rid of them if they're such a mainstay in the team, especially in January. He played quite a lot back end of last season and seemed to be coming along nicely. RB also aren't short of centre backs, more than likely he's been eased back to avoid any further injury. I'm not saying he's A sure thing, but this is much closer to the profile I'd be after compared to the Premier league roundabout players.
