Think some of it was down to the style of football/how he fitted in. He was never going to be a Conte player. Just doesn't have the attributes to fit a typical system of his.

Exactly this. Players such as Winks are often hugely underrated in terms of what they offer to a team, certainly in this style of play. 

 

He keeps things ticking over and allows everyone else to do their job and the more fancy stuff

Ironically he'd have done well there now with postecogulus style of play. Oh well too bad!

He reminds of Mendy but with a bit more progressive passing and I love that and now I wish we resigned Mendy for backup

If you don't play a system he's suited to and expect him to contribute a lot out of possession he will look pretty average to poor.

 

Put him in a system he thrives in and make him the focal point, you should have a very good player on your hands.

 

We are even in a position now that we can't afford him to get injured! He's that important to how we play.

 

I was against the signing initially as I wanted younger players with a higher ceiling....and some more dynamic central midfielders after watching Tielemans for the past 18 months ...I'm softening on that stance now though!

The ability to pass a ball to someone wearing the same colour shirt and to keep possession of the ball is often very underated by some. Believe he once got a MOM at the Bernabau in the Champions league so not half bad on your CV. The manager rates him and that is what matters

Exactly how we won the league, 8 players who did their jobs really well 7 out of 10 every week and Mahrez, Kante and Vardy who were amongst the best players in the league/world that season.

Spurs fan here who has always liked Winks and seen him live plenty of times. I just read a few things on here that I disagree with. He has never been a lazy player, his attitude on the pitch has always been spot on, and spurs fans who think that probably are not going to games. He has always tracked back and had plenty of energy. He was criticised as not being dynamic on the ball. Passing sideways, and not offering anything in the final 3rd or being good enough as a physical midfield presences to make up for that lack of attacking edge. However he was still a mainstay of when spurs were a champions league side, and he was for instance a bright spark in an otherwise poor CL final. A lot of the frustration that came at him was for when Spurs were flat and he was seeing a lot of the ball making his limits more pronounced and getting scapegoated as a result. He isnt going to find the runner with that killer though ball. He also makes mistakes in the defensive third. Poor, pointless back passes, or easily shoved off in 50/50s that could be fouls but you need to show strength there. 

 

Where Winks excels is his ability to receive the ball and turn with it. Excellent when a defender feeds the ball and he turns and can look up the pitch to move it on. His passing accuracy is very good, keeps the ball well (usually), and he has a better recovering tackle than people give him credit for. He has recently added these forward bursts to his game. Although when he first came through he used to do them too. This stopped when his role became more defensive and positional (eg alongside Sissoko who would be the one breaking the lines). Although we did see it more with Mourinho and Conte when he played. 

 

I am very surprised he was sold to a CL team and I think it was a sweetener for Maddison. Allegedly after coming back from Sampdoria he immediately handed in a transfer request and barley even talked to Ange because he wanted guarantee minutes to gain fitness. Which goes back to why has he declined so much from being a CL regular to playing in the championship. Which is sadly injuries and perhaps more importantly a change of strategy at Tottenham. Tottenham decided they did not want to be a possession side anymore and needed the midfield to become a battlefield with players who will win the ball lots and play it out wide.  

 

The reality is he probably isnt good enough as a starter for a top 6-8 side unless specific attributes are required in the formation. But he is definitely a premier league player and with the extra space in Championship perhaps he can develop a few more strings to his bow. Gain confidence and fitness again. I would be very surprised if he doesnt have a very solid season and should Leicester go up he should be able to translate that to the PL and if that happens that 10million will be a snap. For spurs it was essentially a way to take off value from the Maddison transfer. But it was probably going to be hard to get that sort of money who spent the vast majority of last season injured and who everyone knows wanted to leave spurs. So I understand people who see that as a lot.

Does he not like using his left foot to pass to Mavididi?

 

Quite a few times he could have passed to Mavididi today with his left whilst he was out in plenty of space and decided to cut back inside and go back across the pitch with his right

 

Even the crowd were getting annoyed by Mavididi seemingly being ignored in the 2nd half

 

Other than that though another good game from him including a great run to pick up a loose ball outside the box and get the defence out of trouble in the 2nd half

I thought this was possibly his least effective performance for us today. That said if this is the least he offers, he'll prove to be a great buy.

Not the showcase performance of first game but did notice him during game to run all the way back and intervene at the back when the defenders were struggling which was nice to see, we havent had that from our midfielders us for a while.

There were some real frustrations boiling between Mavididi, Winks and Faes in the 2nd half. A few times WInks was complaining to Mavididi before Winks had even played a pass, and Faes was complaining about some of the balls played to him. So much play comes through Winks - there is a lot of pressure on him. I found the frustrations interesting as i couldn't work out if it was them losing patience with the system, or just them not really gelling fully yet. I did like that Winks was standing up for himself.

 

Mavididi was starting to look really, really annoyed at times in the 2nd half. He was hugging the line with loads of space with his arms in the air, and when he inevitably was ignored he was visibly frustrated. Didn't feel to me he was timing runs particularly well which is why Winks was cutting inside.

I know we are playing in the Championship and technically he's not as gifted, but the extra effort from someone who actually wants to be here is evident.

 

With a few marginal gains like this we could have stay up.

If you want to look back at Youri's goals and assists you need to take into account what Winks has done in his last 3 games for us.

 

Take the ball over the top from Cov in the 1st game, no way Youri does what Winks did with that.

 

I agree, on of his game Youri is a brilliant player, but he doesn't do for us what Winks has been brought in to do

...I gave noticed that Mavididi does gesture for the pass in previous fanes but never received the ball!!!

  I think he wants and needs the pass to be made sooner, but if you could get him in he would be clear on goal.

  Hopefully someone like Casadei can find him early and release him.

As my prior post, my point of view is Winks would have done a better job then Youri last season. 

 

He's given us bite and workrate and leadership, which can mean more the technical ability.

Will be vital next season if we can keep him injury free.

He's our best player! Good in every game, great attitude, makes things happen, gets stuck in if he needs to.

 

Great relationship with Ricardo too.

 

It's criminal he's playing in this division to be honest. I was not impressed at the time, but he's actually been a great signing. May well end up being the best signing any of the relegated clubs have made.
