It’s the other way round for me, the only reason the Premier League can sustain so many “big clubs”, APART from them having rigged things in their own favour, is because the English game in general is so strong. You put those six teams in a league together and let them play each other every week, no one watches that shite. Look around Europe - Spain, you’ve got two big clubs, maybe three with Atleti. Germany you’ve really only got one economic powerhouse, Dortmund keep up because their youth setup and recruitment is so good, I doubt Leverkusen will compete in the long-term. Italy - it’s really only Inter and Juventus, even your AC Milans and Fiorentinas can’t keep up. Esteemed clubs around the rest of Europe can’t keep up.

Destroy England’s football league pyramid and you destroy the Premier League hegemony. I’m not sure a European Super League sustains interest the way they think it would.

and we have this expression in the north of England: if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Sorry, but out of the whole sorry article, this is the bit that really riled me.

It is an expression used all over the Anglosphere.

 Is he thick, or what?

You and your five mates do one. Fvck off and form your super league.

But you get no way back into British football ever. No women's football no u17 to u21 games to be played against other English clubs. Also a world ban on your clubs players playing international football.

Now let's see how you scummy money grabbing lot get on.

If this is Ratcliffe’s version of Jim’ll fix it, I’m out! The sheer arrogance of these clubs is staggering. They have completely lost sight that it’s the teams beneath them in the pecking order that enable them to exist and to have grown to what they are today.

I've just recalled that this is the same chap that wants our tax payer money to redevelop Man United's stadium despite being a one of the richest billionaires in the UK, moving to Monaco to avoid a £4bn tax liability, and having a sizeable stake in a club that is one of the top 5 richest in world football. Says it all really.

I've got a feeling with hindsight we may regret kicking up a fuss about the Super League plans a few years back as they'll now ruin the game for everyone else. Should have let them crack on and have their little circus all to themselves.

But their plan for the Super League included staying in the PL but with even more money and clout.

Exactly this. I watch football because I want to see my team compete and win games. I don't watch football because if the big 6. If the big six didn't exit I wouldn't be bothered.

Because of the red cartel football has been losing its entertainment value for years, I think so it could reach a point where it eats itself.

English football would still be strong without the big six, the Championship and League 1 has massive gates, big clubs. Think of how entertaining football could be if your club actually had a chance of winning something, not based on who throws the most cash.

I do think the Super League would be a success for a few years, then it would just be boring.

The fact that he’s used us as an example is pretty laughable and just makes him look stupid.

Leicester City gripped the sporting world not so long ago, certainly more recently than Man Utd won the league! Every neutral wanted us to win the league that year, every neutral was a Leicester fan. It was arguably the most exciting season the premier league has ever seen.

If he’d have said forest and Ipswich he wouldn’t have looked quite as much of a numpty😂

That said, his whole notion is a load of b*ll*x

Thank you for saying this.

If the “big six” or other big clubs in Europe do go it must be a one way ticket out of the domestic leagues and current UEFA competitions.

Some people seem to forget that they were proposing to stay in all the domestic competitions, but elevation to the new ESL each season wouldn’t be on merit. It was a closed shop cartel that guaranteed revenue and removed competition.

The sentiment that they should all “**** off!” is an understandable one. It does, however, have to be under terms where they are kicked out of all the established competitions. My fear is that none of the authorities are brave enough to do that.

I agree.  I really wouldnt care less if the 6 left the premier league and entered a super league.

As foxin_mad says, we go to watch Leicester not to watch the opposition or see stars.  When we play big teams I'm pleased when their big stars or influential players don't play, rather than disappointed, as I don't go to see them and it benefits city.

Yes there would be less money for everyone but so what.....I'd support city if they pulled an unknown out of the pub to play for us.  In fact, Preston away aside, my most enjoyable times at football and the best times at games were in years gone by where money wasn't such a big thing and the top flight wasnt the monster it is now.

A league us, west ham, Brighton, villa etc had a chance of winning.....yeah I'd watch that, evenly matched with a genuine chance at success.

Super league....no relegation or promotion.....boring.  No underdogs springing a surprise .... boring......charged extortionate amounts to watch in person and on TV......no thanks.....but hey lads fill your  boots.  We don't need you.

Historically, the English game has been very open with any club able to compete. There has been no historic big 6 - it is a recent term.

The real change came with the Champions League and its distribution of wealth, and suddenly 4 clubs (Man Utd, Arsenal, Chelsea & Liverpool) could get buckloads more money every year making them more likely to qualfy, and winners from outside that group disappeared. Man City have then blasted everyone out the water with their resources (and clever use of them), so the race for those 4 spots has become exiting, as us, Spurs, Newcastle and Villa have broken in. But actual winners? Just 5 clubs (and us) since Blackburn 28 years ago.

It is so depressing that rather than sharing Champions League revenues with the whole league that puts forward the representatives, they have gone to the FFP to hard code in that non-level playing field, and for the first time put in rules to unbalance the level playing field by saying sone clubs can spend more than others.

The fact that nobody (other than Villa) has challenged this imbalance has now meant it is accepted, and so this shameless call to imbalance the league even more.

Would love to see the other 14 clubs (including Newcastle?) use this as a rallying call to band together and starting to vote through measures to help go back to the days of balance. English football would be a lot better for it.
