In terms of childhood memories, the opener really stretched back the memories to 2010. I remember booking half a day off work for the opening game. Having to leg it to the car from 12 finish to make sure I was home for 12.30. I attempted a short cut to the car park and climbed over a fence which ripped my trousers at the thigh point. Anyway I was in my car and off I went to watch the game with my brother trying to blow the vuvezuela Mum had to buy about 8 bottles of Coca-Cola to get.

The South Korea game as well and its scheduling really mirror 1994 when they were the second game in the early hours.

Thunderstorms and flash flood warning in Mexico City today ahead of the opening game

Forecast suggests the heaviest rain will be well after the final whistle.

Wife is Mexican and has arranged for most of the Mexican population of South East London to pile round our house for the game later.

Have already apologised to our neighbours in advance.

What on earth is this opening ceremony.

Get in the bin.

I want pre match analysis, as I know nothing about Mexico or South Africa.

This opening ceremony shows how ridiculous it is that it’s spread across three countries.

Heavy Mexican culture on show. Which would be great if the whole tournament was there and we were getting to see a glimpse of Mexican culture throughout the tournament and the different parts of it.

We won’t. We’ll get to see a few games in Mexico City and that’s it.

Just FIFA’s way of saying “oh yeah, they’ve had a World Cup match in that region recently” so we can get back to the Middle East ASAP post-Qatar.

It’d be nice if FIFA elected a president who wasn’t a blatent kiddy fiddler.

I know asking for one who is any good is out of bounds but some basic principles would be nice.
