I think one of the reasons he's so disliked by fans of his former clubs, apart from the shit football and results, is that we've all known and worked with people like him. Vain midwits who spout cliched Linkedin bollocks.

No, I think it's the shit football and the shit results.

I'm seeing something in this performace to think that we probably shouldn't throw the baby out with the bathwater just yet. However, he has to show me something in the next couple of league games. This game is a free hit. We're not gonna win this competition.

The board HAVE to get him central defenders and another central midfielder, minimum (preferable another striking option too).

He HAS to bomb out the players who have failed us. Don't give them more chances.

When you see how well this **** can get an attacking side playing, it’s all the more frustrating that he won’t change his philosophy slightly in the build up.

Shame as we played well at times, but as the commentator said “this is what happens to Russels teams, they play well, aren’t clinical enough, concede then go on to lose”. I hope for his (and our!) sake he can shake this reputation off.

Liked RM’s interview today after the game. The way he spoke about and backed Louis Page was good to hear.

also made me laugh around the Finnish Defender, saying he can’t/wont say anything but then basically confirm he is going to sign 😀

The commentator kept saying it, which is ironic, cos we will keep on doing it.

We will never, ever be successful playing this way, whatever division we are in. It is ineffective, goal leaking rubbish.

Totally agree . I’ll add that it’s sooo freaking boring . It’s not “playing football “ as some commentators say , it’s bonkers .

I really do feel if the club can back with him 2/3 new CB’s, a central midfielder and striker whilst shifting out the 6/7 players that need moving on, or at least not insisting they are included in the matchday 18 to protect their transfer value or to try and save face, then he will have more than a fighting chance.

if not and he is ‘asked’ to make sure those players are involved then he is on a hiding to nothing.

No matter what you think of him his post match interview was 90% bang on - the clubs been in a downward spiral for a few years now - everything about what is currently happening is brand new - it’s impossible to make it work over night - your talking about shipping about 15 utter scum bags and rebuilding a whole squad - they’ve trained together for a few weeks with constant new additions and outgoings - some of the football for 65 mins last night was really good - they still need 5 more out and 5 more in for it to be a full swamp drain

I was worried after Saturday but last night gave me a lot more hope - yes if you play like that without Man City’s or barcelonas players your going to get caught sometimes and we need to minimise that but he knows that - no matter what people think he isn’t stupid - he knows it’s risky with some of the players we still have but you’ve got to start somewhere

if we ship out and replace Okoli , faes , skipp and replace with 2 centre half’s a centre mid and a centre forward I believe we will have a successful season - it’s a big IF but iv said it before we have to do better as a fan base and give this whole set up a chance

are you Russell Martin?

A decent performance completely ruined by baffling substitutions.

For the most part the subs were replacing players who haven’t had full pre seasons and aren’t ready to play full 90? Some of them will play at the weekend and come off again around 60-70mins I’d expect

The level of turnover this squad was going to require this summer is another reason we should have chosen a different manager. Get someone in who will work with what he has and get the bets out of them, allows much more flexibility when budget is tight and there is high player turnover.

Exactly. Not someone playing a style suited to the players he thinks he might have in three years.

I'm not a fan but if he sticks with roughly the same team as last night and doesn't bring back Okali, Souttar etc. I will give him a bit more of a chance. If he does he might as well bin him off now.

He said Jakub was "amazing." He wasn't amazing, he was a car crash. Flapping around at corners and crosses, more often then not deflecting the ball into the danger area, rarely collecting the ball cleanly, hesitant as a sweeper keeper, with inconsistent distribution. You cannot lie like that and expect to get away with it, The alternative is that RM really believes that is all you can expect from a keeper. Iif correct that beggars belief, but it would explain his decision to bring in McCarthy and play him above Jakub. I don't think he  understands the basic principles of defence, According to Soton fans, one of his worst decisions was to persist with Buzunu in goal, who was an absolute liability. One analyst concluded RM rates shot-stopping and cross collection less highly than playing out from the back.

He also said we deserved to win the game - the stats show it. I am sick of the possession football ideologues saying this. There's one stat that matters - the final score. I have now seen countless games in the past five years which City have supposedly "controlled" but lost.

I don't say there weren't encouraging signs last night. But time after time we are asked to be encouraged by creative approach play - even when it doesn't lead to victory. And

despite all the exhilarating triangular patterns we scored from a corner.
