Another worrying NHS incident.

I have some problems with my eyes, all part of ageing, and had vitreous detachments in both eyes in 2022.  Yesterday I had another problem, with a spot first appearing near the centre of my vision which developed into a fiery curved line that spread.  This was like the symptoms of the vitreous detachments I had previously experienced but I was worried as I thought that once the detachment had occurred there could not be any repeat so I called 111.  After I eventually got through I was instructed to go to my nearest eye hospital (which offered a 24 hour service) within one hour but to call them first.  I made the call and told them that I would be attending as instructed but was told not to as they didn't have any doctors that evening.  The nurse on duty carried out an assessment on me by phone and advised that it was possible to have more than one occurrence of a vitreous detachment in an eye, that was the likely cause and that my symptoms did not indicate anything more urgent such as a retinal tear.  They would have a doctor who could see me after 1100 the next day, I should phone them in the morning if I wished to attend.

My symptoms eventually subsided as the detachment completed so for me the outcome was OK but I can't help being concerned at a hospital operating with no doctors on site.

Eye doctors operate a little differently than other doctors, as most urgent eye issues can wait until the next working day to be seen. There are generally very few eye emergencies that absolutely require earlier attention within a few hours, in these cases they would have an ophthalmologist (eye doctor) on call that can come in from home.

111 is run by non-specialist staff who follow a set algorithm for recommendations, so by nature the algorithm is very cautious so as not to miss anything serious. But it sounds like your symptoms and history were typical enough for a detachment, that the specialist triage nurse was reassured that an urgent assessment was not necessary.

So you were given telephone advice by a trained opthalmology nurse who told you you didn't need to worry and they were right?

It's rare for an opthalmologist to be on site out-of-hours. There is always one on-call for emergencies such as penetrative orbital injuries, but most other issues can either be dealt with in A&E or can be booked into eye casualty the next day.

It sounds like you received an acceptable standard of care.

I used to work for a brewery on a yard with an open gate to the road,  I was loading pallets of beer onto trailers for export.

One afternoon two lads just strolled into the yard, jumped up onto a trailer and started throwing packs of beer down. God knows how they thought they were going to carry them all, or how they were going to get away with it on a busy afternoon with several blokes working on the yard.

They got accosted by a couple of lads and the coppers came and took them away. Completely off their tits they were! lol

I hate insurances companies. Just had to send two faxes at work of about 40 pages each and they had to be dead on the money without a singles mistake  or the claims would be rejected. Total claims were worth  $500,000. The pressure!

But why?! lol

Because they are about 20 years behind technology wise with business, banking, etc.

For example employees often still get paid by cheques which they have to take to the bank to cash.

that’s what the insurance company requires.  We have to send them records and the way they want that done is by fax. For what it’s worth, it’s the only part of my life where o even hear the word fax or even see one.
