Babylon Posted 24 May 2014 Posted 24 May 2014 I'm pretty stubborn when it comes to an argument so this doesn't happen often - but I have to say that the defence of our transfer strategy put up by some of you on here has won me over. On balance I can see how we are going about things the right way. I didn't mean to come across as negative; I have had my doubts, but it's unrealistic not to have some doubts when it comes to transfers. Pearson has got it right in the past and it will be pretty exciting to see what he can get out of the likes of Albrighton, or even Campbell if he's to come.I have doubts about every transfer until I see them play for a while in our shirt!! Too often players I thought would be good haven't been and visa versa. All the pundits last year were glowing about Norwichs summer of transfers, look what happened!
Roger Posted 24 May 2014 Posted 24 May 2014 So we've replaced Conrad with Hamer, Whitbread with Upson, Dyer with Albrighton and maybe Waghorn with Campbell. The 'big' signings will start soon I'm sure.

The 'big' signings will start soon I'm sure. Put that way, it looks like these signings have already improved the squad. My only concern is that while Albrighton is probably a better all-round player than dyer he won't have the same damaging, raw speed. I hope we see a transfer somewhere down the line that gives that back to the squad.

If they don't it can be nullified quite easily.
deep blue Posted 24 May 2014 Posted 24 May 2014 True, but 'Raw Speed' only works if teams give you the opportunity to run in behind. If they don't it can be nullified quite easily. it's still a useful weapon to have at your disposal, if used judiciously.
Steve_Guppy_Left_Foot Posted 24 May 2014 Posted 24 May 2014 Lets be honest we'd all prefer DJ to Fraizer
ScouseFox Posted 24 May 2014 Posted 24 May 2014 On our 3 signings so far, all 3 sets of fans were truly gutted they'd gone. The best indication there is IMO hmm, cos fans on forums are always the best indication of the truth...
Bakey Posted 24 May 2014 Posted 24 May 2014 People seem to be struggling with the concept of a squad. The intensity of the premier league will mean more injuries and suspensions. The full 25 plus under 21's is vital for survival. Albrighton is a good solid player, as is upson and Campbell. Still so much time to get those 3 quality players for the spine of the team. This! ^^^
Scoobyrob Posted 24 May 2014 Posted 24 May 2014 I like the idea of signing decent squad players on the cheap who are capable of forcing there way into the side. As for Albrighton he was Villas best player towards the end of the season and if he hits the heights he's capable of it will probably be our best signing.
Tielemans63 Posted 24 May 2014 Posted 24 May 2014 Campbell is well decent. A million quid would be a good deal, anything more and maybe not.
FoxyPalace.com Posted 24 May 2014 Posted 24 May 2014 Lets hope QPR feck this up so we can go in for Charlie Austin.
DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 24 May 2014 Posted 24 May 2014 Ok for a million quid, but nothing to write home about.
Bettsj2 Posted 24 May 2014 Posted 24 May 2014 He could be a good bargain signing, but even more so for a side that already have what they need to stay up - Hull, Stoke, Palace for instance, as opposed to Leicester. I've always found him a bit slow and wasteful for a winger and I'm surprised we're not going for a winger with pace seeing as we have two who are more limited in that regard. But he's an excellent crosser of the ball. For us, however, we're trying to up the standard of our squad and he doesn't come into that category of player that we can confidently say will improve on what we've got in Mahrez / Knockaert. He's played 27/76 games (quick look at Wikipedia!) in two seasons for a struggling PL team. So I agree he could be a great buy and has promise but, unlike some of the names linked, he's not going to convince a neutral that Leicester are adequately preparing for the step up. A further example of what I'm saying is Campbell - if we were to sign him but lose Wood, who is four years younger and hit 20+ goals in the Championship a year ago (better than Campbell has ever managed), then I'd worry that our squad had actually been weakened rather than strengthened. He, like Albrighton, is a player who has struggled to make the grade for a poor Premiership side in recent times. So I don't actively feel either are / would be poor signings; it's more that they would have to do a lot better if they were to prove good signings; and they could - I'd worry - represent a PL-experience-bargain-basement transfer policy. That is a fair enough way of looking at things if perhaps a tad unrealistic to what you think can be achieved in the transfer market given our newly promoted status. The way I see it is:- Dyer out Albrighton in Whitbread out Upson in Logan out Hamer in Waghorn out Campbell in All 4 improve the quality of the squad. Whilst I see wht you say statistically about Albrightons appearances, if you want to use stats, his assists per game is 2nd to none and all at Premiership level. I cant confess to having seen him play as I only really watch Leicester, but the Villa fans all seem to be gutted he's leaving and that is usually a very good indicator of what you're getting. Campbell i've never been sold on in truth but is he a better option than Waghorn? Yes most definitely. For £1m, I dont think you can complain at that for a squad striker.
J.Lisemore Posted 24 May 2014 Posted 24 May 2014 Who said we are in for Pelle? How can we press on for a player the club is probably not in for. Please apply to the club for a role in the scouting dept!! And who said were after Campbell? Press on was probably the wrong choice of words I'd just like us to sign somebody within that calibre.
dedlock Posted 24 May 2014 Posted 24 May 2014 Babs statistics are pertinent. If we have any player scoring 10 goals in PL next season we should survive. 2 or 3 scoring 7 or 8 we will be safe. Campbell scored 6 in his first PL season in a side upset by internal turmoil. Compare that seasoned PL player Darren Bent, who we will no doubt be linked with. He,in at a similar disrupted club. scored 3 PL goals. If we can get Campbell for £1mn that will be good business.A years PL experience, as part of a side who's owners don't appear to panic or interfere he could be a 10 goal striker.
PerfumePonce Posted 24 May 2014 Posted 24 May 2014 Already at Leicester according to Wiki. Was like that with Albrighton the day before he was confirmed.
Mark_w Posted 24 May 2014 Posted 24 May 2014 Already at Leicester according to Wiki. Was like that with Albrighton the day before he was confirmed. So? I could go and change Bale's club to Leicester and it'd mean **** all.
Stadt Posted 24 May 2014 Posted 24 May 2014 So? I could go and change Bale's club to Leicester and it'd mean **** all. Do it
kingfox Posted 24 May 2014 Posted 24 May 2014 I could write on Martyn Waghorn's wikipedia page, saying how I caught Mark_w in bed with him.
PerfumePonce Posted 24 May 2014 Posted 24 May 2014 So? I could go and change Bale's club to Leicester and it'd mean **** all. Just saying. Noticed it with Albrighton and the same has happened with Cambell. Worth a mention at least. But put your money where your mouth is and get us Bale. And while you're at it, change Derby to Championship play off final winners 2014.
