MPH Posted 23 July 2014 Posted 23 July 2014 Ooh Nige you wily old fox you.... you had all those doubters worried.....
RedSoxUK Posted 23 July 2014 Posted 23 July 2014 Troy Deeney isn't good enough for our squad let alone a position in the 15. If Chris Wood was starting 46 games a season for Watford, he would have done a similar job - at a developed younger age. The fact Pearson's team are in the slightest interested in Deeney is worrying given we've just forked out 8mill on a Championship striker already. Deeney for 10m is embarrassing... King scored 1 goal in 11 aps for us in the champ back in 07/08 - DEENEY scored 1 in 35 in the same year in league 1... History doesn't always give us all the right information, but i think Kings' been fantastic as a starter and impact sub, DEENEY is still a mediocre championship starter, or a bench player for QPR, not 10m, not someone we should be in for. At the end of the day, vardy and Nugent got us up as our strikers, I would feel uncomfortable having Deeney and Ulloa up top or rotated and 18m down. Campbell, sure, vardy could use the competition and backup, but not Deeney...

WTF King has to do with anything I don't know, or Deeneys record in league one 7 years ago whilst being played on the wing.

WTF King has to do with anything I don't know, or Deeneys record in league one 7 years ago whilst being played on the wing. He's been okay, no way near Premiership standard though - there's no point having Ulloa, Deeney, and Wood, and IMO I would rather have Wood over Deeney playing and on the bench. We should put faith in our own in situations like this. King was because of Watford's bid of 1.5m. Andy King's quality as a player and a young leader in the past seven years outshines Deeney 2 to 1. It's not exactly relevant in the slightest, just wanted to bring it up. Deeney was the stand out player in a very poor attacking Watford last year, and out-shined by Vyrdra the year before. I just don't think he's the right man to get in now we have Ullloa. He's a good player, yeah.. ideal for Burnley if they lose one of their strikers, or QPR because of HurrDurry Redknapp, but the rest of next years prem wouldn't have a place for Deeney, and neither should we.

Campbell, sure, vardy could use the competition and backup, but not Deeney... That's all pretty much an assumption on your behalf. What Deeney has shown (and I'm not the biggest fan of his as a person, mind) is that he is consistent on a Championship level thanks to a constant run-out in the Watford starting eleven. 43 goals in his last 84 Championship games isn't "mediocre" for a striker, that's a pretty good return in fact. The transfer talk surrounding Deeney might coincide with a few of our players maybe leaving the club - so in terms of transfer fees, it would all be relative again. Also, comparing King (a central midfielder) with a striker is a bit far-fetched.
teblin Posted 23 July 2014 Posted 23 July 2014 In other threads: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/football-transfers/10984610/Leicester-City-told-to-raise-bid-for-Watfords-Troy-Deeney-to-10million.html Looks like Nige want Deeney here too!! If he get half the amount of goals he got last season in the Premier and the other 3 do the same we'll have a chance of staying up.
Super_horns Posted 23 July 2014 Posted 23 July 2014 I wish we had more "mediocre" strikers who have scored 20 goals in consecutive season! If nothing else Deeney would have confidence and form albeit at a lower level. Now the gamble for you would be to see if he can make the step up straight away - having Nugent and the Brighton guy would he be certain to start anyway?
Robin JD Popley Posted 23 July 2014 Posted 23 July 2014 £20m being spent in one week potentially... And I doubt Nigel will be finished yet. With talk of Malouda, Deeney (and a whole host of other strikers including Campbell), it seems we aim to continue to play to our strengths next season which are definitely in the middle and final third of the park. Also convinced we may yet sign the elusive defenders we've all been wanting. All in all, I think Nigel aims to upset the apple cart amongst our opponents next season and that is exactly what we all should be wanting to hear. Carry on Boss!

Not to mention Vardy who is our best striker by a country mile.

ronnup Posted 23 July 2014 Posted 23 July 2014 I Rememeber us considering Ebanks Blake for about 3 mill. I know he's had a bad injury, but his championship record was outrageous and he's a similar player. I'm a big fan of not questioning Nigel and the team, but potentially 15-16 million or more on Ulloa and Deeney would be disappointing.
Master Fox Posted 23 July 2014 Posted 23 July 2014 I really hope we get him. Will take the pressure off Ulloa a bit. If Deeney flops then who else better to abuse when the fans turn and chant "what a waste of money" ? If he's a success even better, we claim Watford's great day and greatest ever player. Win win all round imo.
Babylon Posted 23 July 2014 Posted 23 July 2014 but potentially 15-16 million or more on Ulloa and Deeney would be disappointing. Surely it's only disappointing if it doesn't work out? I've been surprised by our transfer activity, certainly not what I was expecting. But I don't know what's gone on, we could very well have gone through the list of targets and been knocked back every time, or been beaten to players by other clubs etc. I can't believe we've waited three months to decide we want Deeney, we must have been after others first. Not sure players like Deeney are any more of a risk than x foreigner anyway, Wolfswinkel, Cornelius, Mitroglou come on huge fees and flop (the list goes on). Perhaps we'd rather just take a risk on someone who doesn't need to settle in another country and can hit the ground running without the baggage.
Happy Fox Posted 23 July 2014 Posted 23 July 2014 The amount of money is crazy for a back up player if we signed him for that amount you would be expecting him to start alongside Ulloa.
Callabinho Posted 23 July 2014 Posted 23 July 2014 I don't like Deeney, we hail big Wes here, And Troy Deeney bullied him in the fixture last season. Big strong lad with plenty of pace, and plenty of goals in him. I just don't like him.
johnny the fox Posted 23 July 2014 Posted 23 July 2014 get knig, ranger and deeney in..I want us to be called the dirty dozen..
Guest Col city fan Posted 23 July 2014 Posted 23 July 2014 get knig, ranger and deeney in..I want us to be called the dirty dozen.. Cattermole too surely?

I agree; or maybe clubs have only just got wind that Deeney might be for sale at a price Not sure Wolfswinkel and co that didnt perform in premier will score the same as Ulloa or Deeney last season in championship this season or have the hunger / desire to do so. For me, the big issue people on here have is the fees being paid, yet everybody knows that you will pay over the odds for home grown players, plus Fulham haven't helped paying over the odds for McCormack.
Happy Fox Posted 23 July 2014 Posted 23 July 2014 I am not bothered about the money side of things we can afford it we as we are a prem team however the valuation of the player is my concern he certainly isn't worth more than £7.5m, that's for sure.
dayday Posted 23 July 2014 Posted 23 July 2014 If your wondering why Pearson has signed Ulloa and is trying to get Deeney in....it's because Chris Wood simply is not good enough!
Guest Basildon Fox Posted 23 July 2014 Posted 23 July 2014 You know football has gone mad when Loic Remy costs £8.5m and Deeney is valued at £10m!!

Out of interest, who would you rather have in your team next season, Deeney or Vydra? Please explain why
JJS84 Posted 23 July 2014 Posted 23 July 2014 You know football has gone mad when Loic Remy costs £8.5m and Deeney is valued at £10m!!Conditions of transfer though! Not as straight forward as one value against another. Remy has a clause that states he can leave QPR for £8.5 mil if the club bidding is playing CL football. Plus I'd imagine his wage is around £80-£100k a week. We would not get remy for £8.5 mil. Not would he fit our wage structure. It's apples and oranges with remy and deeney current quoted values.
