st albans fox Posted 11 March 2015 Posted 11 March 2015 Well we tried attacking sides and we got demolished almost every game. Away from home against the top sides it is a sensible approach. Did we? I thought we hadn't been 'demolished' this season? I agree that against the sides where we are never going to boss decent middle of the park possession, it makes sense, given our lowly position.
Guest ttfn Posted 11 March 2015 Posted 11 March 2015 Well we tried attacking sides and we got demolished almost every game. Away from home against the top sides it is a sensible approach. No, we didn't get "demolished almost every game". The only 2 games we've been demolished in this season are Swansea (pathetic performanc from the players, not Pearson's fault) and the Manchester United away game (where in stark contrast to the home game we looked terrified of crossing the halfway line). In fact the only games since early October I can remember where we had a real go at a side are QPR (which we would have won with a competent striker and goalkeeper), Spurs (which we should have won), Liverpool away (which we should have won), Palace (which we should have won) and Villa (which we did win). Even the arsenal game we didn't look interested in crossing the halfway line until 2-0 down. Otherwise every game has been characterised by caution on our part, often against sides who needn't be treated with caution (Newcastle away anyone?). Now it's perfectly possible that we are really looking to attack every side we play and that the opposition's tactics have stifled us but I really don't think that would explain the overwhelming sense of caution we've had over such a prolonged period. Blackpool (for example) "had a go" and regardless of the opposition's tactics always remained an attacking force (longest goalless streak was 2 games) and ended up going down with 39 points. And even if it is the opposition stifling our play, 5-4-1 hardly makes it difficult for them.
m4DD0gg Posted 11 March 2015 Posted 11 March 2015 The only time we have tried to attack a team and come off second best was against manu at old trafford which is hardly a surprise. Our best spell of the season bar the first few games was over the xmas period which ended the home defeat to stoke where by pearson changed the team from the previous home win against villa by dropping the arguably man of the match Albrighton who has not been seen since with the exception of his brief cameo at old trafford with a peach of a cross and an assist.
Babylon Posted 11 March 2015 Posted 11 March 2015 Both Upson and Morgan suggesting they're going to see how it works at home - not a good sign at all. Sorry, but this isn't the time for experimenting, it's tried and tested and it's failed to gain any points except 1 vs Everton away which was always on the cards anyway given their form and terrible goals conceded record. Wasn't expecting to get anything out of Arsenal and Manchester City, but honestly, we're not going to be playing either of them on Saturday, it's Hull City for christ sake, we've beaten them before playing 4 - 4 - 2 away from home, there's no reason why 4 - 4 - 2 or 4 - 5 - 1 won't work and 5 - 4 - 1 will. I'd like to think they're bluffing, and it tricks Steve Bruce in to thinking we're playing defensive, because it is defensive without a doubt. It's going to be so boring if we set up 5 - 4 - 1 and Hull are coming to win. Overall, I don't care if it's 5 - 4 - 1 or 8 - 1 - 1 with Hamer as a striker, just get a win. If the 5 - 4 - 1 actually works vs Hull and we have good possession, enough shots and chances, then sure, do what you want. Hmmm... So you're saying it is proven it doesn't work even though we got points from the one game you thought we were capable of getting points from.
surrifox Posted 11 March 2015 Posted 11 March 2015 I suspect that Bruce will prove far too wily an opponent for our Nigel sadly
Daveaway Posted 11 March 2015 Posted 11 March 2015 Pearson will stick to his guns, it will be same team that we saw in the last game, the game before that and the game before that. After the match it will be the usual we played some good football, what we need to do is regroup and look to the next game, looking to the next game does not guarantee you three points or saving you from relegation. This is a game that we cannot afford to lose, lose this then its good bye to the Premier lge.
teblin Posted 11 March 2015 Posted 11 March 2015 I suspect that Bruce will prove far too wily an opponent for our Nigel sadly You mean like the year they went up when we beat them and home and drew away and when we beat them away this season?
Babylon Posted 11 March 2015 Posted 11 March 2015 You mean like the year they went up when we beat them and home and drew away and when we beat them away this season? Facts not allowed in here, lynch mob mentality only please.
Footballwipe Posted 11 March 2015 Posted 11 March 2015 I'm not looking forward to the atmosphere on Saturday that's for sure. It'll be tetchy, tense and the moment we concede players will be hounded and everyone will be angry. And I'm straight out of the stadium at the final whistle if we lose because I won't be able to take the toxic venom that'll follow in the stands.
teblin Posted 11 March 2015 Posted 11 March 2015 Facts not allowed in here, lynch mob mentality only please. Sorry, I'll get my coat!
Donut Posted 11 March 2015 Posted 11 March 2015 Well we tried attacking sides and we got demolished almost every game. Away from home against the top sides it is a sensible approach. Its a sensible approach to set up to every game playing for a narrow defeat and everything after that is a bonus then? You mean like the year they went up when we beat them and home and drew away and when we beat them away this season? Dont see the relevance of your post. Its a completely different Hull team to the one that got promoted. We scored 102 points and now were bottom so whatever went on in the championship is now irrelevant, and the game at Hull this season was a complete smash and grab job. Theres not many games where "nick a goal and defend like beavers on your goal line" is going to bring much reward.
Ollie93 Posted 11 March 2015 Posted 11 March 2015 If we win do you think we'll stay up? I think it gives us a good platform to move forward. With Burnley playing Man city and QPR playing Palace, we have to win to close the gap. You not think?
Monsell1976 Posted 11 March 2015 Posted 11 March 2015 Yeah pearson suggesting going 5-4-1 against one of the worst sides in the league. A formation that stopped us getting a good hiding against the big boys, but against a side like hull. We are in desperate need of points, and pearson thinks isolating kramaric like he has been since we played the big boys is not a negative formation. Against the big teams I can just about get it, in our position I still think we should have had a go, the result would be the same, we cannot defend for 90 minutes, and with one up front, don't score enough. The likes of hull and those around us, are where they are because defensively they are about as bad as us, so go at them and test their defence for **** sake. Predicting 1-0 hull of pearson plays 5-4-1, goes at the with a more unrestricting formation, 3-2 city
Ricey Posted 11 March 2015 Posted 11 March 2015 If we do go with 5-4-1 I'll be fuming, but despite the Mercury suggesting he'll stick with it, no one really knows so I'll save that potential anger until 2pm on Saturday.
Gerard Posted 11 March 2015 Posted 11 March 2015 I can't see Pearson playing 5-4-1 the more I think about it. Pearson gives nothing away to anybody and there's no way he would tell the Mercury anything about his plans for Saturday. 5-4-1 is hardly a tactic that will catch on like the Barcelona 4-6-0 with false number nines. He could be out of a job this time next week if he was to start with a negative formation against one of the worst sides in the Premiership at home in a game that anything other than three points will be deemed as a huge failure. If I was his boss that would confirm to me he's lost the plot and there is no option but to sack him.
JackTorrance Posted 11 March 2015 Posted 11 March 2015 Hamer RDL Huth Upson Schlupp Mahrez James Cambiasso Albrighton Vardy Kramaric Of course it's pointless naming the team you want, Pearson will play 5-4-1, and stick with his favourites (Schwarzer, Morgan, Konchesky)
Fox Ulike Posted 11 March 2015 Posted 11 March 2015 And just when you thought this season couldn’t get any more bizarre! The only reason we’ve looked better defensively with a 541 is because it’s co-incided with Huth’s inclusion in the team. OK the 541 is better than a 442. But why not just play a defensive midfielder instead of a third centre-back? You still need a player to bring the ball out of defence – most teams do this with an anchorman rather than relying on the ball-playing skills of their centre-backs! If we go 1-0 down then we’ll need to make a substitution straight away. Southampton played a five man defence at WBA the other week and had to make a sub after 15 minutes following an early WBA goal. Playing 3 defenders rather than 3 midfielders just commits you to playing a defensive game regardless of how the game goes. Hull will probably be quite happy with a 0-0. They won’t have to work too hard for it.
Ric Flair Posted 11 March 2015 Posted 11 March 2015 Are we still any wiser what our best team and formation is? We're worse than Man Utd for this. Pearson has gone from playing 3 strikers and a winger to now playing just one striker and it's produced no wins, just a couple of brave displays against Arsenal and Man City. We were dog muck vs Villa and Everton we were crap until he made the changes. The thing with us is, we aren't capable of keeping clean sheets, for whatever reason. Going more defensive hasn't helped either, we're still making 1-2 dreadful mistakes each game that cost us. So why sacrafice a striker or creative midfielder to plug an extra body in there. Let's accept we are iffy at the back but make sure we utilise our strengths which is counter attacking football. Kramaric for all his qualities, cannot do it all on his own up top. He loves to roam all over the pitch which is not acceptable when playing up top on your own, it leaves us toothless. I'm absolutely baffled that we've gone 5 at the back and still not played our attacking wing-backs whom this formation would suit, in Schlupp and De Laet. Schlupp's role has been a waste of time, he's looked lost drifting about the midfield and his lack of a brain is exposed even more. We've wasted so many opportunities to remedy our horrific season and it's almost too late. I cannot stomach some of our tactics this season, and right now they are as bad asever so it shows we're no nearer to cracking it. The most worrying thing, bar our defensive ineptitudes and inability to defend, deliver and attack set pieces is that Pearson still hasn't twigged that to become an attacking team you have to have supply to your attackers. Playing 3 strikers might seem very brave and gung ho, but it's often useless if there's no supply up to them, which we've seen on many occasions. I'm astounded he hasn't figured this out yet. We'd be far more dangerous if we had Kramaric operating with some proper creativity up to him, which is from the likes of Mahrez, Knockaert, Albrighton and Nugent. However only one of these players gets picked and even he got subbed off when looking at his most dangerous against Man City (Mahrez) Our home form is beyond poor this season, away we've also not done a lot points wise but our performances have been slightly better yet at home it's been dross. We simply have to win at all costs, very much like we did in the away game against them. We're facing the same scenario 3 months on.
Ollie93 Posted 11 March 2015 Posted 11 March 2015 Whilst I'm annoyed with certain decisions that have been made this season like everyone else. I don't think any of us are any wiser than Pearson himself as to what our best team is, nothing has clicked this season. We were all raving about 4-5-1 after the Arsenal game, now calling for his head because he might keep it. Personally I'd go for a 4-2-3-1 going to a 4-5-1 when defending, even though I know which players should go in each position, I haven't seen them in training all week so i'm only going on the last time I saw them in a match. I'm just trying to convince myself that Pearson chooses the best team each week. Which I'm struggling too.

That's the problem mate, pearson should have had a game plan/ formation in the summer.Researched what formation works or does well, in the premier league, and then get his team/ signings, or lack of them, used to the formation, and comfortable in them, and settled, and forming partnerships and understanding, not constant chopping and changing of formations in desperation during a season. Playing players in the right positions helps, and leaving out players who have looked better than his favourites out, also causes problems. The bloke hasn't got a clue what to do, or how to save the seasons, in my opinion. And a bloke that doesn't remove players after costly mistakes, after costly mistake, deserves everything he gets.
