European giants plotting revamped Champions League to stop teams like Leicester gatecrashing the party

If this starts to look likely to happen I expect the fans of the clubs looking to enter this competition (the real ones of course, not the passionless, sedate tourists who don't get football) to protest against it. They must understand their place in the English game and how wrong it would be for them to detach themselves from the competition.

Agreed. As much as they can be entitled arseholes sometimes, I think if you just gave them the thing they feel they have a right to without having to compete for it they'd probably feel a bit grubby.

Manchester United would not argue they created football because, er, they didn't. Sheffield F.C. are the oldest English club, Notts County the oldest league club, Aston Villa's owner created the Football League.

Seriously, can we ban these morons from speaking publicly?

The irony of that bloke saying that Leicester aren't needed in European football. The sport has been absolutely ruined by people like that.

We've really rustled the elite and the idiots at the top of the game and they are panicking. Lovely stuff

Genuinely one of the most sickest things I have ever read.

If the so called "big five" are meeting and even discussing the idea they should be absolutely ashamed of themselves, it's a shame the other 15 PL clubs can't boot them out the league.

What next? Man Utd start the season on 15 points due to the amount of money they bring in? Liverpool lead 2-0 when we kick off at Anfield?

I swear that's happened already?

Americans - no history and no soul! lol.

Every time I turn my computer on and get bombarded with adverts and flickering, "take notice", interruptions I don't want, I think of Americanisation and how it's all designed to intrude in the name of the great God money or the insatiable desire to advise, promote, control and direct.

They are so bad mannered and think nothing of the rudeness of continual interruption...a bit like Andrew Neil!

And we just follow like greedy sheep.

Years ago there were a few adverts at the end of each television programme. Now it's every few minutes and they often do a recap in the programme, in case you've forgotten what you watched a few minutes earlier.

Americans and football? They're a liability and would sell any aspect for a quick buck.

They have so little appreciation of the game that the first thing they'd do is widen the goals and make them taller to ensure high-scoring matches if they could get the control to do so.

It's why they like basketball so much - there's always another two points to add. Games finish 110-108 and there's no real challenge to scoring a basket. Just get the tallest bloke you can so he can virtually place the ball in the net - big deal.

They really have no appreciation of the concept of a 0-0 draw being dramatic and the merit of a great battle between defence and attack. It's all shallow to them. Fast food but with a ball.

Really good post!

If they're not happy with teams like 'little Leicester' etc with a smaller budget but better team connections performing better than and embarrassing them - they should consider overhaul their player recruitment team/process/scouting methods. Stinks of both jealousy and stupidity.

Simples.

Stereotypes are a real time saver!

He obviously doesn't realise a lot of football's commercial value comes from the underdog stories within the sport. How the fvck has he made his money?

You, me and similar others are in the minority now I think.

Summed it up last season in the FA Cup when some average all prem clash was shown instead of Blyth Spartans v Birmingham, because more of the general population would prefer to watch two Premier League teams instead of a Northern Premier and Championship team.

It's sad, but if you can't see the commercial value lies with the biggest and most supported teams, then you're in denial.

Fair point I suppose, but we'll never know what the audience for that other game might have been. I get the impression most are turned off by all-Prem ties, but TV companies make the assumption of "well, if nobody's interested in watching this then we're sure to get a lower viewing figure for that tie so we might as well stick with this."

The big Spanish / Italian / German teams will be falling over themselves for this to happen. To try and take a cut out of the huge PL commercial TV pie.

The others league aren't very competitive so it's boring, however, if this happened and replaced a domestic competition it really would be the beginning of the end

Typical, some billionaire wants to control the game. Only just got rid of blatter and another wannabe ecclestone of the football world comes along. It's like a conveyer belt of arseholes.

should be a points deduction for the club's that attended. Wishful thinking but I'm actually serious. Bringing the game in to disrepute.

Yeah but on the other side of the coin

1)how many football clubs outside the prem actually make any money? So if it's all about money/viewing figures now then might as well just shut up shop only show big sides even in the cups and let all the supposed small sides go broke enough sides are as it is. Their players don't have jobs, can't pay tax and are signing on. There has to be a point where it can't only be about the money at the top end. It's called the pyramid for a reason, every dog has its day and I'm sure if the club's at the top conspire to go alone it will be like playing kerplunk with the pyramid and football's days in its current form will be numbered.

Lastly if the conniving plutocratic Cnuts that were at the meeting are that greedy then what next. Playing in Europe so no need to pay UK taxes? Treason. Points deduction for the lot of them cut off the head of the snake now

If there's a silver lining to this dark cloud, it's that the big club and marketing execs have already created--to use a term from their world--a PR disaster. This plan has already been met with near universal opposition from the fans and the press, and I think any such proposal would be resisted by a fan movement that would make any hitherto fan protest (at least in England) seem like a tea party. And I'd bet fans of the "big five" would show solidarity with their peers.

I will concede, though, that with there being a power vacuum of sorts at UEFA with new Champions League TV rights up for sale, the big clubs have enough leverage to dictate the terms of these deals to further enrich themselves. UEFA will be able to stop a breakway or a "closed shop" for now, but it will come at a price to smaller clubs and smaller federations.

I fully expect you & the rest of the US Foxes to head down to the Port Of Boston and throw Man U, Liverpool & Arsenal kits into the sea if this should ever happen.
