European giants plotting revamped Champions League to stop teams like Leicester gatecrashing the party

Manchester United are among the teams looking to change the rules by hoping automatic places will be awarded to the traditional big hitters

Leicetser City look set to seal a top four finish this season - and take a spot in next season's Champions League in the process.

But such feats could soon be a thing of the past if a radical new plan to overhaul the competition comes to fruition.

The likes of Manchester United and AC Milan are reportedly looking to bring in new rules that would see Europe's biggest earners gain an automatic place in the competition.

It would effectively end the hopes for plucky triers like Leicester of making a money-spinning appearance in the group stages.

According to The Sun , chiefs are hoping to push through the changes by as early as 2018.

United and Milan are both at serious risk of missing out on the Champions League once again this season, sitting fifth and sixth respectively in their league standings.

Failure to qualify would represent United's second campaign in three years without Champions League football, while Milan have not featured in the group stages for the past two seasons.

Other big earners like Chelsea and Liverpool - both former winners - are unlikely to make the top four and qualify for the continent's most coveted competition.

The secret plans are reportedly being discussed by the European Clubs Association and the above named clubs could all have a guaranteed place come 2018.

Ideas are believed to have been sounded out to be submitted to UEFA ahead of their next TV deal, which is due to start in 2018.

Bundesliga boss Christian Seiffert has given his backing to the proposals.

He said: "If a Super League comes in the way you’ve heard it, and I’ve heard it, that could help us with brand recognition.

“As with any company in the world, UEFA or the ECA has to think about what can be done better in the future.”

Think that would put off the excitement of finishing as high as we are for clubs that aren't the 'traditional' big 4; and unfair, as it seems Man Utd's/Milan's failure in this competition has got to them and want things their way.

Thought this was just Sun clickbait rubbish when someone posted it earlier, but they've been talking about this on Sky Sports News this morning. Very concerning for the game.

Well I'm sorry but who's fault is that? It's not ours. They can't just put it down to the form a non-fashionable club, whether it be ourselves, Palace or Stoke. Manchester United should look at themselves, their manager and how much they've spent. They should be in the top four but they aren't because they haven't been good enough this season, nothing to do with how well other clubs have been performing.

I would be disgusted if this happens but I expect nothing less. Football is so wrong nowadays its unbelievable. These football clubs - Manchester United, Chelsea etc - talk about their brand not their football club. I've been concerned about the game of football for the past decade now.

If they feel like that I  suggest they piss off from the national leagues and play in their own Euro league.

It's hard enough now to conjure up enthusiasm for the the seemingly closed shop at the top if that chink of light is removed then there's little point in being the PL other than the money and what's the point of the money if you are prevented from achieving anything.

Literally obliterates the entire point of competitive sport. This is branding, and football would have about as much credibility as WWE. Absolutely disgusting.

I think I might completely stop taking an interest in football if it happens. I mean, we all know football's unfair, but if they're going to be this unashamed and blatant about it, then what is the point? What's the point of a competition where everyone knows who the winners are before a ball's been kicked? It's a bad joke.

This article is really about the idea of a European Super League. This idea has been around for at least 20 years.

This is totally different to giving rich clubs automatic access to the Champions League, regardless of where they finish in the League, which will never happen.

It's the Sun - don't get sucked in!!

I would stop watching football. What's the point? But that said, it won't happen anytime soon.

If this happens football at the highest level is no longer a sport - just an ego trip for the supposed 'elite' - the same 'elite' who are being outperformed by a new set of clubs - consistently in some cases (United/Liverpool, etc)

I'm sure they're not referring to the Champions League here, it's probably a money-spinner side competition with big-name teams invited. it would presumably be played in summer in Qatar or the United Arab Emirates with most teams resting their first-team players for it and it would seriously disrupt the 'big' teams pre-seasons

I can't see how they'd get away with this move, especially with all the European laws that would get in the way.

It is of course natural for a business to try and protect its interests which is what Manchester United and AC Milan are trying to do, but this move would be anti competition which is frowned upon in the commercial world AND because the game is still technically a sport, they'd also fall foul on a lot of grounds here - all it would take is a group protest to be lodged at the Councilbfor Arbitration of Sport by those teams not involved (and there'd be some reasonably big hitters there) and I'm sure these plans would be deemed unlawful / against the spirit of sporting competition.

This is not to say those with interests to go this way won't try with this or other means - I truly believe Financial Fair Play has only been come in because the big clubs were concerned how many sides were getting finance to challenge the established status quo.

But ultimately any move to anti competition would be determinatal to these big clubs balance sheets in the long run, the consumers (i.e. fans) wouldn't stand for it. The Champions League already has a problem in that the group games are no longer considered as important by the established orders fans affecting attendances and viewing figures and the sensible chairman and chief executives that remain at the bigger clubs (there are still some) know that upholding the interests of the sport is what will be best for their clubs profitability in both short, medium and long term.

Should this somehow get pushed through, I can confidently say that'd be done with following football.
