Former Leicester manager Nigel Pearson has backed his old club to be crowned Premier League champions this season, but admits his happiness won't extend to everyone there.

Pearson was sacked as Foxes boss in June despite guiding them to a miraculous survival last season where they won seven of their last nine matches to finish 14th.

The 52-year-old's successor, Claudio Ranieri is enjoying a dream debut campaign at the King Power Stadium with surprise-package Leicester holding a two-point lead at the top of the table after 26 matches.

The 55-year-old was sacked as Foxes boss in the summer - despite guiding them to 14th in the previous term

Pearson's successor Claudio Ranieri has led Leicester to an impressive 53 points after 26 games this season

And Pearson is confident that they will still remain there until the the end of the season - although it will spark some mixed emotions.

'They'll win it,' he told The Times in an exclusive interview. 'A lot of people in the game haven't really sussed what Leicester are about. They've got some really good players - [Jamie] Vardy's form has been unbelievable - but collectively they're a strong group.

'They coped with the pressure exceptionally well last year and they're doing the same this year. They won't be interested in what anyone else says. Good luck to them. I think they'll do it.

'I would be dishonest [though] if I said I would be happy for everyone there.'

Jamie Vardy has been in stellar form for Leicester this season - netting 19 league goals so far this campaign

In two spells Pearson achieved remarkable progress at Leicester, getting the club promoted from League One and the Championship before establishing Premier League safety.

Prior to his sacking he had signed Shinji Okazaki, Robert Huth and Christian Fuchs ahead of this term too.

And because of his involvement in their progression, Pearson feels his hard work provided the platform for where Leicester are now.

'Leicester are where they are because they've had a fantastic season and because their manager has managed skilfully and sensibly, but also because they previously had someone in charge who was able to front it up and make tough decisions when they needed to be made,' he added.

'I know how pivotal the work I did was for them to be in the situation they're in today'

Any guesses who he wouldn't be happy for?

 

One comment after the story says he didn't get on with Mike Stowell.

 

Obvious guess is the owners.

Nige is probably still blaming him for our terrible set pieces last season. But what does he expect from a goalkeeping coach?

He has a place in the hall of legends in my eyes, but in attempting to put his name out there he's becoming more and more like that bitter ex.

Seems a fair comment-he's clearly still taking an interest in us. He's proud of what he achieved here, and rightly so.

You know he's incapable of political answers, so if a journo persisted with asking if he felt any bitterness, the best he could say is there are certain people he won't be happy for. We still don't know about the exact circumstances of his sacking, but the reason given was an irreparable breakdown of relationship, so inevitably that means he fell out fairly majorly with someone.

It sounds as though he made a brief response to an annoying question and the journo gave it prominence. It was always his weakness that he felt he had to tell the truth, and he has. Non-story.

Its alright Pearson saying he built the platform but some might question why he did so badly with this group for 8 months of the season. Crap tactics that's why. Its all about how you spin it. Nige is obviously touting for a job again but somehow seems to be failling. Maybed his poor media profile & arrogance have something to do with it.

He's obviously not going to be happy for everyone.

He sounds Bitter Fcuker , he was sacked , so what move on !

Thank that outburst is because no one seems to want him at present

Doubt its the owners he'd be upset with, he must realise by now that his son was to blame for his sacking.

lol Clever ordering of the quotes and inserting a word in square brackets. Makes it seem a lot worse than it probably was. As many have said, Man in being sacked and not happy for everyone at the company he used to work for shocker.

Sorry it's just you mention crap tactics etc (ironically what we failed so badly with last season) but have we not got where we are using 4-4-2 this season? Its only been possible with addition of Kante in the middle, and the surfing up of the left side in Fuchs, who were both being scouted well before Nige left I might add.

I don’t think he sounds bitter at all. I think he has every right to be proud of his role in our club’s success. He also gives credit to Ranieri.

I think that is a fair assessment.

 

We have had two brilliant managers who have got us to where we are today.  Not sure why anyone would have a problem with Pearson choosing to blow his own trumpet a little bit…

So funny how people actually believe this article... Are you really that stupid? It's typical media rubbish, as others have said the journalist probably asked a few times if he'd be happy for everyone at the club... He was just being honest. Media trying to make a story out of nothing

Tactics isn't necessarily just "what formation you use" though.

He's going the right way to ruin his reputation here. This is only small but he seems like the kind of guy that will completely cut ties with the club out of bitterness.

 

He'll become the new Robbie Savage
