Paying over market value, you only have to look around to see what other people are going for to get an idea of that.

That's exactly what we're meant to do. If someone is asking way more than market value, you walk away. There is paying a bit over someones market value, and then there is paying £18m for a defender who has yet to show himself capable of top level football, who was signed for a couple of million a year or so ago.

Getting value for players isn't an imaginary thing, Pearson preached it all the time. That's why he said they actively scouted people coming to the end of their contracts, or with one year left. Because you got better value. Just because we are suddenly flush with cash shouldn't mean trying to get the best value you can is abandoned, that's very dangerous.

I do trust them... but there is one serious concern I have and that's the loss of Pearson in the transfer process. Prior to him and Walsh coming back the owners had total disregard for getting value for money and we spent huge amounts on average players. Now, you can argue that the bigger issue was signing bad players. But someone at the club rubber stamped the signings and the silly wages, there was nobody that said NO.

Now, we still have Walsh and I believe we are likely to get more good players than bad. But Pearson used to act as the buffer on many deals, he said himself that he'd pull a transfer if he felt they were asking to much, he's the one who preached getting value for money.

I like that way of thinking, you can still do the same if you have money, you just do it on a different level. Now perhaps that's what they think they are doing... but there is also the chance that we've lost the man who preached value and we're left with Walsh picking players, with Rudkin just bidding whatever it takes to get them, with little regards for cost. £18m for Keane and £25m for Deeney has me worried.

Know what you are saying and know what Col is saying but the rules are changing now due to the amount of money in the game and the clever tricks the agents are using.   We are at the top of the pile now as Champions and if we want to stay there me must go for the players we need and to some extent 'suffer' the cost.   If we don't then we will drop back down into the pack.   If we can get some more strength in depth then perhaps we can be a bit more choosy and also look for promising talent ...   but at the moment we are on the bare bones.   At the end of the day the owners will decide.

I'm not saying we don't spend money, I'm more than happy to spend £18m on a defender. I'm not happy to over pay for someone though.

Umtiti going to Barca for £21m, we're talking someone with champions league, Europa league experience and four full seasons in Ligue 1.

Bailey to United £15m rising to £30m, two full seasons in La Liga and Europa league experience.

Glik £10m Experienced international defender

Tomkins £10m Experienced prem player at a good age.

The price for Keane just doesn't add up for me.

Everyone wants a bargain and many teams will get them.  Unfortunately teams/agents know a club like ours with a limited squad is going to have a bit of desperation about them as we want to defend our position and do well in the Champions League.  I think we need to keep faith and just trust them.  I know NP was a counterweight to excessive spending but haven't we moved on from him now ...  ?   I think this transfer window will hopefully be a one off in terms of spend but the priority is getting a good squad together.  Its all about striking a balance but we need players.

Why would anyone want to move on from that? The man might be gone but the idea was right.

It's not even about getting a bargain, whilst lovely. Paying close to someones current worth would be a start, we can go on about other clubs and agents using our desperation. But we're the idiots chucking £25m at Watford, we're making ourselves look a bit foolish in the market with that one and people will try and exploit that.

We managed to get Musa without paying silly sums, £16m for an experienced striker of a good age, played champions league and international football. It's about what you'd expect in an age where championship strikers all go for £8m+. So we don't have to bend over and take it from other clubs or agents.

I appreciate we want to keep an English core, than means over paying somewhat. But there has to be other options we can go for and bring through, you could dip down to the championship and sign highly rate CB's for half that price. We already have 5 experienced CB's on the books, so I don't think we expect them to walk straight into the team.

I fully agree as I've said in previous posts.

I'm happy enough to spend £18m on Keane if our scouting team are confident that Keane will become one of the top 10-20 best centre backs in the world.

There aren't that many centre backs in world football that £18m doesn't buy them. It's galling to see us being quoted this price when Barcelona are spending a similar amount on their centre halves and Dortmund got a 25 year old Spanish international for £6m and we've been quoted this for a player who has played most of his football at Championship level and nowhere near the national team.

I'm not even sure he would get in ahead of Huth anytime soon.

I hope Leicester get the deal for Keane done this week and don't let matters drag on. The quicker Burnley get the money, the more chance we have of getting Tom Lees from Sheff Wed. :)

That's the issue, we just don't know what does on behind the scenes. If we knew there had been a discussion about the ludicrous price but Walsh was sure the lad was going to go on to much better things... then we'd all feel a bit more at ease.  We never will though, so those worries are bound to come out.

United paid a huge whack for Smalling on the back of a handful of appearances for Fulham as they were sure they had seen what he could go on to do.

Sheffield Wednesday, probably one of three teams who don't need the money :)

Media sources from as wide as Burnley and Leicester are reporting Burnley's former Manchester United starlet Michael Keane has declined an offer which would have made him the highest paid Clarets' player of all time.

Leicester boss Claudio Ranieri has already tabled an offer for Keane, believed to be in the region of £11.5 million pounds. The player is well known to Leicester City, having already spent six months on loan with the Foxes during the 2012-13 season.

The Clarets have announced a determination to keep hold of their promotion winning and hugely impressive 23 year old central defender. Keane is widely regarded in knowledgeable footballing circles as a potential England centre back.

It is understood the prospect of Champions' League football with Leicester is the reasoning behind Keane's rejection of a new deal at Turf Moor. This could be construed as a clear indication that he would like to speak with Leicester City.

Steve Walsh the former Foxes centre half and current Recruitment Manager at the King Power Stadium sees Keane as the long term replacement for Leicester pairing Robert Huth and Wes Morgan.

Leicester are in the process of strengthening their squad for the battle to retain their Premier League title. The Foxes have already added Ron-Robert Zieler, Luis Hernandez and Nampalys Mendy to their player roster.

It looks for all the world that Nigerian international Ahmed Musa, currently plying his trade with CSKA Moscow and Burnley's Michael Keane could well be added to the Foxes squad very soon. (TEC).

When will they learn?

With £18m Dyche can buy 5 more Sordell's

or 21.5 George Boyds.

We should slow our interest in this and let it stew for a while. Keane clearly wants to join and the longer it drags on the more likely he is to start kicking up a fuss. 20m is absolutely ridiculous when Vardy and Kante were available for this kind of money.

so have we walked away yet?

Nope & I don't think we will either. If it's true that Keane has turned down a new contract then the most likely event next will be he hands in a transfer request.

Personally think we will get this one done.

Similar situation to Shackell last summer - he sulked through pre-season training after numerous Derby bids were turned down and even feigned injury to avoid playing in pre-season friendlies. He got his move a week or so before the season started but Derby had to pay more than TWICE their original bid - £3.5 million for a 32-year-old with only one year left on his contract. It turned out perfectly for Burnley - we bought Shackell from Derby for £1.1 million, had three great years out of him (including promotion) and sold him back for THREE times what we paid the Rams for him.

To make it even sweeter, Burnley got promoted again while Derby "bottled" it for a third year in a row. On top of that, Shackell scored an own goal and gave away a daft penalty as Burnley beat Derby 4-1 at Turf Moor. :)

You'll have to sign Keane while you are still in the Champions League - January or next summer might be too late.

haven't you heard? Dilly ding dilly dong, we are winning the champions league & premier league man

We should leave this alone for now, no rush for a centre back but if we're still interested come deadline day then put a bid in and see if they accept rather than having an unhappy player.

Next summer you'll be back in the championship, Keane will be in his last year and we'll get him for a fraction of the price.

I'll wait.

unless they cave then I doubt it.
