The coaching staff know what he is like professionally and personally and if they like what they see it's as close as a risk free transfer as possible. It's not my money so I'm all for it if the link is correct.

Just watch the highlights of that Forest end of season game.. His positioning and work rate were woeful at times. It was no surprise to me that United sold him

That was his first stint of proper professional football anywhere. Defenders thrive on experience, he will have improved no end since then - what you should consider is whether he had the raw attributes then, not his overall effectiveness / performance.
