Good question, and I don't know for sure but it is something I've pondered in the past but have been too lazy to look up.

It does occur to me that if there are N possible outcomes to an event, and if for outcome i the odds given by bookies are Oi, and the amount of money laid on outcome i is Mi, the money paid out in the event of outcome i is Mi x Oi. The bookie gets to keep the total money taken (T) less the money taken for outcome i.

If the bookie wants to break even for any possible outcome, then Mi x Oi = T - Mi

Rearranging: Mi x (Oi +1) = T

therefore Oi + 1 = T/Mi

or Oi = T/Mi -1

Which gives a formula for setting the odds to break even under all circumstances.

In practice it is obviously not so simple. Firstly the bookie needs to make a profit, so these odds are too generous. He would need to be less generous but still needs to compete with other bookies, so the resulting market would drive actual odds.

Secondly, this formula assumes that you know the final amounts taken for each outcome at the time the odds are set, which is clearly not the case, so can't be the actual way things are done in practice.

My maths is rather rusty, so please feel free to correct if I've made a mistake.

This reminds me of simultaneous equations & algebra at school, based around 3 popular sayings ...

So if "Women are worth time & money" (W=TxM) and "Time is money" (T=M) ... W=MxM

But "Money is the root of all evil (MxM=E) (can't do sq root sign lol)

Therefore W=E

Hence all women are evil! ... except Mrs Renard of course!

Would like Maguire to join us. But here's a question..

out of all the centre backs we've been linked with, if you could only take one, which one would it be?

Mbodji, Maguire, Gibson, Hoedt or Acerbi?

Personally I'm leaning to Hoedt if I had to pick. Maguire and Gibson would be the lowest risk as they have prem experience but Hoedt playing quick balls out to our wide players would suit our system.

Yeah, thinking about all of them, I'd probably go for Hoedt too.

He's Young 23, Tall 6'3", left footed for balance, Full international and he can play abit. I'm just unsure of his pace and his out and out defensive qualities. Does anyone know what his stats are like for tackles blocks etc?

The stalkers of squaka are not posting what they ought to...

Fwiw I'd take Hoedt as well

As we have only been linked with 5 CB's so far will Rudkin manage to sign one?

We don't want relegated players!

Would you have been saying this about Sigurdsson if Swansea went down? Granted i wouldn't have many players from the teams that went down but in Gibsons case, he certainly was not one of the reasons Boro went down. If it wasnt for how good their defence was they would have been relegated well before they were. They conceded less goals than we did last season. Hes a very good young player who has the potential to get better. And Maguire, who also got relegated, would be another good signing.

He will go Everton.... for the amount Burnley are expecting for him, we could get both Hoedt & Maguire for the same price.

Or Maguire and Gibson. To be fair, ive never watched much of Hoedt or Acerbi as i dont watch italian football so can't comment on either. I just prefer the idea of signing prem experienced players. I know we've had some great signings from abroad but we've also had some terrible ones.

Hoedt has the potential to be big here. Suits our style of play completely.

Sign someone ffs :(

We have.. Sam Hughes!

Rudders is having a well earned rest after the exertions of getting that over the line!

We joke, but it's probably the truth :( he's convinced the owners the squad doesn't need further strengthening, all so he can have a few weeks off :(

Nothing to do with the thread, but absolutely brilliant!

I've been told he's our top CB target, as well as another CB from outside the PL. The guy is usually spot on as well.

Is the 2nd target from abroad or from an English division below the PL?

I do love these 'I been told by someone' posts. I cannot wait for the next full moon.   Get any body in, even a new tea-lady at Belvoir Drive would make me happy right now..  I can feel Rudder's Carrier Pigeon flexing his little wings as I write

and readying his crack for the written offer to be inserted..     Somebodyiscomingin.

Hope Shakes buys 2 CBs to start in our team. I cant see it though - he's been working far too long with Wes and Huth. I hope friendship doesn't get in the way of progress.

I'd not be so sure, unless he now considers Benaloune as genuine first team material.

I can see us buying one now, and continuing to develop prospects - with another purchased if need be in January.

It seems like we purchased Hughes with the intention to develop him into a squad member by 2018/19.

Also Benalouane seems to be integrated in the squad now... Going with them to Monaco and playing consecutive games when we could have picked Wasilewski or Amartey.

I think we need 2 CB's but sadly I can only see us signing 1, with Benalouane happy to be 4th choice... :/
