Foxes join European elite as valuation soars

Leicester City have leapt into the European elite after their Premier League title win in the 2015/16 season, according to figures from an influential new report.

KPMG’s Football Clubs’ Valuation: The European Elite 2017 report providing an indication of the Enterprise Value of the 32 most prominent European football clubs, and sees the Foxes enter the list in 16th position with an Enterprise Value reckoned, at top calculations, to be around €482m.

With a combined Enterprise Value of €29.9bn, the aggregate value of Europe’s 32 leading clubs grew by 14 percent in comparison to last season.

Despite another disappointing Premier League season, Manchester United top the list ahead of Real Madrid and Barcelona, becoming the first club to surpass the €3bn threshold in Enterprise Value.

Andrea Sartori, KPMG’s global head of sports and the report’s author, said: “The aggregate value of Europe’s 32 leading football clubs suggests that the overall value of football, as an industry, has grown. While this is partially explained by football’s broadcasting boom, the internationalization of the clubs’ commercial operations, their investment into privately-owned and modern facilities, and overall more sustainable management practices, are also key reasons for this growth.”

Sartori continued: “In terms of media rights value, the English Premier League sits comfortably at the top of European leagues, although other major leagues have outlined well-defined strategies to compete for the attention of global fans. However, unlike other factors, individual club’s ability to influence their broadcasting income is often limited, despite the very evident impact this revenue stream has on their Enterprise Value.”

English Premier League clubs dominated the ranking, accounting once again for approximately 40 percent of the aggregate Enterprise Value. This is expected to increase next year as a result of the broadcasting agreement which started this season.

Yeh we are so elite we cant hold onto our best players, have no confirmed manager, lack of scouting team and Rudkin pulling the strings.

There are only two clubs in the world who can actually hold onto their best players, other than that there is always someone bigger and better for players to move on to.

Spuds look in great shape, but are likely to lose their two starting full backs. That shows how it's almost impossible to break into the "next level" without ridiculous sums of money.

Yep, great point. Even Manchester United lost Ronaldo to Real Madrid, despite them winning the Champions League during his time there, being voted world player of the year and having arguably the greatest manager in history as his boss! Barcelona even lost Luis Figo to Real Madrid!!! Keeping your best players is not easy for anyone.

Personally whilst I want our team to be competitive I do not want us to turn into the circus that is the Manchester Clubs and Chelsea. Spending your way to the title is IMO a hollow achievement. Whilst we are unlikely to ever win the league again, our win was one one of the purest and most romantic stories in football history. I'd rather we build teams who passionate for the shirt and club instead of a first eleven that is purchased from elsewhere. Of all the big clubs only Barcelona I truly respect as they bring most of their team through their academy and supplement that with marquee signings.

And whilst Mahrez wants to leave, I have no problem with it. He was with us during the Championship days, the Great Escape, The Greatest Story of All Time, and our Champions League run. The only part of modern folklore he missed was Deeney Day. His situation is far more reasonable than Kante's departure.

This, basically unless you are Real or Barca you are a selling club or for some reason Bayern seem to bring through players and in still a real loyalty to the club, the only exception to the rule now maybe Chelsea and that's down to money and being in London I guess, Manchester United have lost players to the 2 spanish clubs in the past and it will happen again I'm sure, City lob a barrel load of cash at everyone, but given the choice I reckon most of them, would move to Spain if granted the chance.

Chelsea have a better chance to hang on to players but only because the chairman can afford to hang on, but eventually there becomes a point where even he would sell for the money i guess.

Even the fairy tale and the romance behind us hasn't been enough for Kante to want CL football for 1 season, knowing he would have still got a move a year later, and Mahrez shows why that may not have been the worse thing, based on how he's played this season maybe he should have gone as well, but that's hindsight I guess.

Money rules and it helps if the sun shines as well

Extraordinary, but we don't seem to be behaving like an elite European club. More like little boys lost at the moment.

So Watford is one seeing as they held on to their best player when a bigger club who were champions gave said player his only chance to play in the champions league - who is the other?

Not everyone wants to go, just like Vardy didn't want to leave here. But they are exceptions not the rule.

Looking though that list, maybe those who think Spurs are similar to us in size might rethink ........

also, unless we get into Europe next season, our value will drop off significantly as little prospect of champ league will be evident

Does anyone think that?

They obviously don't know their arse from their elbow if they do. Now Everton can possibly be a comparison but Tottenham are light years bigger than us.

Yes indeed; no movement on players coming in either I note.

So how at Tottenham worth double what we are?

Their players value I suppose.

Still 7th most valuable in England is a pretty good improvement and step on the right direction.

Tottenham are a different stratosphere to us.

Their revenue outside of the TV money and prize money is probably about seven times bigger than us.

They're soon to be moving to a 60,000 stadium which will make them one of the biggest match day revenue clubs in the world.

Their players are worth hundreds of millions more than ours.

They signed a £30m kit deal with Nike last year, ours will be worth buttons.

The top dozen (world) clubs have income two or three times that of even a PL-winning Leicester.  This is due to their vast commercial revenue (mainly sponsorship and merchandising).  They also generate several times the ticket/hospitality revenue, but that is a smaller part of any club’s top line.

Vardy chose to stay with us as well.

Deeney choosing between us and watford and vardy deciding a 100k a week on 5 years for us or moving to london if you know your career maybe up in 3 years time is not quite the same as being asked to turn down barca or real to stay at watford or leicester is it.

And people still question and criticise our owners? Phenomenal considering our true club size!  Yes a fairytale PL Trophy helps somewhat but still incredible :)

Did not relise Schalke were so big, just read about them - thats how you run a football club!

'In terms of operating income, Schalke possesses the 7th highest operating income of any football club in the world at €48 million,[6] and 0% debt as of August 2014.[7] S04 generates the 12th highest revenue of any football club in the world at €198 million'
