This is my overriding feeling this morning. Yes we scored 3 but it was possibly the worst back line we'll face all season. None of them were centre backs, they'd never played together and their team mates constantly gave us the ball in dangerous areas.
funkyrobot Posted 12 August 2017 Posted 12 August 2017 Did anyone watch the post match interview with Shakey? He was asked about our subs and he explained his thinking, Firstly bringing Amartey on to put the extra man in midfield to try and stop Ozil 'getting in the pockets' and then he bought Iheanacho to try and play off the back of Xhaka. He accepted that he needed to look at his decisions again but pointed out that it was bad defending from set pieces that was our downfall. The most interesting thing I thought was that he did mention a couple of times about our subs not being able to pass on the information of the changes to the players out there, and also those players not demanding this info from the subs so I suspect an instruction given to Amartey or Iheanacho wasn't acted upon properly.
Gazza M Posted 12 August 2017 Posted 12 August 2017 For me Shakey brought on Amartey too early. I was just waiting for that sort of tactical change. Very Pearson to be honest. We were hurting them on the front foot and it was giving the defence a breather. You can't play that defensive away at Arsenal and soak up pressure for 20 mins and get away with it. I think he realised that and brought Kelichi on. Obvious to anyone he should have replaced Shinji on 70 and kept 2 up top until the last 7-8 mins and then maybe brought on Amartey and King or Chilwell to sit and took off James and Mahrez/Vardy. Very naive. Criminal not to get at least a point. What a confidence boost that should have been and a statement to the big boys. What I learnt: We need 3 more players: Mahrez replacement (Townsend will suit us. Great delivery.) Morgan has regressed (new CB required to partner Harry. I would go for Gibson, let them use Huth and Morgan as guidance in the background.) RB cover for Simpson. (Debauchey from the Arse is doing nothing. Maybe season long loan.) Then bin off some dead wood. Ulloa, Benny, Mendy, Musa etc and of course Mahrez going to. We need to remember Shakey is new and like anyone new to a job needs time to develop. What would worry me is if we repeated the same naive mistakes again and again. I am confident if we attack like that week in week out we will win plenty of games. Just need to get smart at the back if we want to challenge the top 6.

perthfox Posted 12 August 2017 Posted 12 August 2017 why oh why take off a striker and put on a midfielder when we had them on the run complete mistake and cost us the game tactics were very poor from that point on
foxinsocks Posted 12 August 2017 Posted 12 August 2017 Without shinji and a playmaker we seemed to get penned in. The waves kept coming and woth 20min it was likely they'd get 2 goals. Bringing in amarty looked like a goid idea.... but... I think cs is trying to show loveto mahrez... but he was terrible. I think that away in the pl we need three in mid.. just playone winger.. albrighton
Merging Cultures Posted 12 August 2017 Posted 12 August 2017 The Shakey is new comments are odd. He has loads of experience. As assistant he would have been involved in pretty much every decision. Managers don't decide on tactics, subs etc alone. They consult and discuss with assistant managers, coaches etc. What Shakey is new to is the off the pitch responsibilities, such as media requirements, and more interaction with the board and owners. The on-the-pitch and coaching duties are his bread and butter. Btw not blaming him for our capitulation entirely. I do think we sat back too early, but I think there were lapses in concentration (as Vardy said) and not enough effort from some players too.
yorkie1999 Posted 12 August 2017 Posted 12 August 2017 There's not going to be many teams that score 3 at arsenal

Chico1958 Posted 12 August 2017 Posted 12 August 2017 Oh it's great to be back I'm gutted like most I suppose but I feel better than I did on the first game of last year. So let's wait and see where we are 7 games in before we all turn on the Manager I do feel it's a bit harsh to have a go at the some of the players or the manager after one game. The jury's still out for me but I'm prepared to wait and see
M0901 Posted 12 August 2017 Posted 12 August 2017 Arsenal fan just tweeted saying Leicester will be relegated this season because they have "no bottle". Such a cock ??? scored 3 at the Emirates. Arrogance personified.

Legend_in_blue Posted 12 August 2017 Posted 12 August 2017 We know exactly what is going to happen when we play conservatively. It's got nothing to do with Shakespeares time in the job. He's been here years and should have seen this coming. It sends out the wrong message to those on the pitch, it's naive, and it's a poor tactical switch. Very Pearson-like. As soon as Amartey was introduced, it was clear as day what the result would be. I'm not putting blame on any one player or players, but that tactical switch, which was a poor one, invites the kind of mistakes that led to the two goals.
Sunbury Fox Posted 12 August 2017 Posted 12 August 2017 We can argue about allegedly poor substitutions and lack of concentration but for me the biggest issue is our inability to keep the ball and manage down the clock, especially when under pressure away from home. Arsenal knew if they pressed us enough we would panic and give the ball straight back to them. We obviously don't have as many top players as the big clubs but even similar teams to us like Southampton seem able to knock the ball around and keep possession when they need to. If we'd done that more in the last 20 minutes Arsenal would have had fewer chances to attack. As it was, our poor ball retention meant we had to suffer wave after wave of their attacks and eventually tiredness kicked in and we made poor defensive errors as a result.

This to me seems a bit lame... and suggests he can't communicate well with some of the players. How detailed would the instructions have to be, to NOT be able to communicate them... plus he's stood at side of pitch..
VLC86 Posted 12 August 2017 Posted 12 August 2017 I would love to remember who it was on here saying drop Vardy for Slimani.

The subs DID make a massive difference, as they forced us to change how we were playing. We went from a dangerous, counter attacking unit to a sit and try to soak up pressure type team. That's not always a bad thing in itself, but you must have the players to do it. Wilf and Amartey as the two holding mids trying to defend.....suicide....

I think it's fair to call him/the team defence* out when they've had a bad day at the office. * Except Schmeichel who I thought made some great saves and kept us in it at times.
ronnup Posted 12 August 2017 Posted 12 August 2017 As people have said, James looked ok and then he was knackered. I think with Iborra and DD fit , probably DD starting, then Iborra coming in for Shinji, we win that game 3-2. Harsh, but promising.

We can keep position quite well when we are two or three up and the other team have ran out of ideas. It's like committing suicide when we keep lumping it out to know one and try and just defend wave after wave. I've woken up after last night and I'm still in a bad mood!
