Why Leicester City fans have bad memories of trips to Peterborough

Columnist Gary Silke recalls a series of 'largely disappointing' trips down the A47

It’s been a while since we had to head east down the A47 to Peterborough.

And that is no bad thing, because if I had to sum up our trips to Posh in two words they would be ‘largely disappointing’.

The tone was set the first time I visited London Road for a League Cup game in 1992. Although our new wunderkind Julian Joachim scored, City lost 2-1 on the night.

Later in that 1992-93 season, we returned for a league game and 8,000 City fans made up half the attendance figure as a win would be enough to clinch a play-off place for Brian Little’s side.

City were outplayed and lost 3-0. The visiting fans didn’t take it very well and there were streakers (male), bonfires on the terraces and a pitch invasion repelled by police with horses and dogs.

The trip the following season was less eventful, with a live televised Sunday game producing a 1-1 draw, City being rescued by a 90th minute own goal.

It would be another 14 years before City travelled to Peterborough again, during our single season in the third tier.

Nigel Pearson’s side won the league at a canter, but there was a wobble along the way when Posh played us off the park and won 2-0.

That left them just four points behind at the top of the table. As we headed back towards the car, the heavens opened and we were pelted with large hail stones. I always recall that as the low point of a generally triumphant season.

Although Peterborough got promoted to the Championship, along with City, the clubs had differing fortunes.

When Leicester visited London Road in April 2010 they were firmly in a play-off place, while Posh were already relegated. A scrappy game on a bumpy pitch ended in a 2-1 victory for City at last, with goals from Steve Howard and Andy King.

Although it seemed like the club were heading in different directions, it was only two years before City made another league trip to Peterborough.

In March 2012, a poor game was settled 1-0 in Posh’s favour and the only bit of entertainment for the usual large turn-out of City fans was a very public falling out between Nigel Pearson and Jermaine Beckford, who appeared to be unconcerned about taking a forward position for a late corner.

The last trip to Peterborough was five years ago. City were chasing a play-off place, United were fighting relegation.

The Leicester side that would eventually win the Premier League title were coming together. Schmeichel, Morgan, Drinkwater, Vardy... surely they could see off lowly Posh?

Well, no. City were leading through a Ben Marshall goal with 15 minutes remaining, and contrived to lose 2-1.

On Saturday, hostilities will be resumed as Posh and City battle for a place in the FA Cup fifth round.

We are hoping that Claude Puel will realise that history has taught us that the Fens are not to be travelled lightly. A strong side will be required to get a victory.

1-2

I expect the players to have learnt their lesson after Fleetwood. I do see Peterborough giving it a go but we'll just have too much.

Kelechi and Iborra for us.

I went to the game in the 92-93 season, we were dreadful, terrible atmosphere amongst the City fans, I remember the fires on the terrace, very hostile.

If we're not ready for this, we'll lose. So I expect commitment to the cause and a more full-strength team than the one that stuttered to get past Fleetwood.

We've rarely had a better chance of getting something out of the FA Cup than this season, with us pretty much stable in the Premier League middle and only the cup competition to play for.

I'd love us to beat these at the first time of asking, but I can see us putting in another half-hearted performance, needing to go the full mile and a replay at the King Power to settle this tie.

Peterborough seldomly is a happy hunting ground for Leicester City.

Here's to a change. :fc:

I wouldnt mind, the same team, as against Fleetwood....they just have to be on the frontfoot,

show more confidence, and prove they have the right to earn those wages...

We could put out the best foxestalk considered team, and still watch a lazy turgid performance.

It c wont be Puels selection, or format that loses us the game, but the aptitude and attitude of

3-5 players on the day...

If we do get through, and play bigger teams...4 games including the final (I believe), I suppose

each phase will see the real 1st choices gradually coming back in...
