I don't think he's a good player, but any professional player that is left in the doldrums is going to feel frustrated, angry and depressed. Danny Simpson was thinking about leaving till Claudio Ranieri put him back in the team (turned out that worked out quite well!), and Mendy was send back to France before coming back as a man reborn. For Iborra, SIlva, King, Benny, etc it must be depressing. And whilst you could say none of them have been that good, had any of them had a real sustained run in the team under a different manager, perhaps they would have turned out to be good? Albrighton was a Villa outcast, and Huth unwanted at Stoke as great examples of how a good player can sometimes be underlooked. In Benny's case though, he's just too much of a madman!

He's also only the 5th best CB in the u23's, genuinely!
Babylon Posted 7 January 2019 Posted 7 January 2019 Just get rid, pay him off and kick him out of the door. You don't need people like him about.

Whilst I take your point, when a player seems on the surface to be failing, it's become very common now to troll out the phrase regarding having an extended run in the side. There's 4 names above and perhaps Puel could have also been mindful of Slimani, Diabate, Okazaki or whoever. But ... each time that perhaps that means leaving someone out who is definitely worthy of a place. Also, which one do you choose to risk and how many at one time knowing, that if you lose some are gagging to put your head on the block. Mendy for example, against the sighs of many, was given one game and has been ever present since. He gave extended runs, against the judgement of some on here, to Chilwell and Pereira so he clearly for me, judges not just on one poor display on the pitch, but possibly upon what he sees in training as well. The fact he's in the past preferred James, Mendy, Ndidi and now Choudhury to Silva and Iborra speaks volumes really. I think if there was even a half viable option, we wouldn't be seeing as much of Iheanacho either.

PoshhFox Posted 7 January 2019 Posted 7 January 2019 Forgot we had him on the books. Why do we give out such long contracts to people when they clearly were pretty shite to begin with

Jaspa Posted 7 January 2019 Posted 7 January 2019 He's a nutter and all that, granted. Fair enough if he's making noises when he isn't playing, he's over 30 so shouldn't be taking it sitting down. Problem is obvious, he's not good enough and no-one has been interested enough to take him. He's kept training, playing with the young lads, he's probably not bad as training practice given he's an experienced continental pro and fresh from a lack of high intensity game time. Not his fault Claudio had to honour the mob and buy him from Italy and it's not his fault we handed him a big wage for four seasons. Contracts up in the summer so hopefully he can get a club who can let him play out his 30's. Did well in one of Shakey's early wins against West Ham away and wasn't bad against Sevilla either. Could even release him for free at this point if another club wants him, what's he gonna miss out on apart from four months of u23 games and an end of season clap off?

Tuna Posted 7 January 2019 Posted 7 January 2019 Thing with Benny is we knew he was shite 5 minutes into his debut.
TMELcfc Posted 7 January 2019 Posted 7 January 2019 He’s not great but in the champions league games and back end of Shakespeare taking over, did he actually do much wrong? He does need to leave, not sure why it is taking him so long to go...

From what you see on social media he seems to get on well with other players. I doubt he's causing trouble in the dressing room, not that he doesn't need to leave for everyone's sake.
TheLittleBigMan Posted 8 January 2019 Posted 8 January 2019 How is he even still here? This amazes me. He's on 40k a week isn't he? They must be scared of him. I am.
