It’s thought a compromise may be reached this week with a likely cash fee of £78m — a world-record fee for a defender, eclipsing the £75m Liverpool paid Southampton 18 months ago for defender Virgil van Dijk.

(Steve Bates, Mirror)

"It's thought" and "may be reached".

Here is the next laugh for us all.

The Mirror now reporting that the reason Harry is playing in all of our pre seasons games is so that he hits the ground running once the move to Man U is done.. ??????????????????

It won’t happen now, it’s too late for us to get a replacement.

The media have hyped this up because of the lack of transfer activity. The crooks of it are, one bid has been made, it wasn’t enough, so Man United can frankly, Mr. Shankly **** off.

I see. Are these bowel movements regular or do they take you by surprise?

No, I can see something happening next week regarding Harry Maguire.

Maybe they’ll come back in maybe they won’t, the longer it goes on, the likelier the “shove your £80million up your arse” chant at Stoke today becomes reality. No time left, no deal. Put up or shut up and move on will be the message I’m sure

I feel if they pay the money we wanted at this point (and it's accepted), they've just wasted an entire pre-season of Maguire settling in.

Even if United get their man, this simply highlights the lack of organisation in their recruitment.

For me they're in a similar situation to us last summer - in need of a major overhaul. Puel actually did a fantastic job and we'd identified exactly what we needed, and brought in the best we could get nice and early. We also brought in some great youth prospects late in the window.

United on the other hand have signed just 2 young players, one with HALF a good season in the Championship, the other with ONE decent season in the Premier League and for an exorbitant fee. A fee that justifies our valuation of Maguire. They've signed none of their other targets and still have to move problem players on.

They've had a mare.

Exactly, Puel took his half year and identified what we needed to advance as a team. Ultimately, he got that by the January window with Youri on loan. But we now have a clearer strategy of bringing through younger players.

You've highlighted exactly whats wrong with the recruitment. They buy "hype" players as I describe them, those who have attention, generally on social media or through the media.

James may well come good for them, but as you pointed out he's had half a good season. AWB at Palace has had a good season and they've paid a lot for him.

These signings would be great if they bought experienced pros to complement the younger players. But their recruitment is so bit part and lacklustre that again they're spending big money, but not getting what they need.

They're doing the same things over and over again, but expecting a different result. The definition of insanity.

So Maguire is playing for "fitness" and LCFC is playing him with the first team for ... because we want our putative starting centre halves to not play together this pre-season?

Brendan had no problems playing Maguire with the B team when it seemed likely he would go...if a deal was close, he would have been in Rotherham today.
