StanSP Posted 5 June 2020 Share Posted 5 June 2020 (edited) Why are Evans and Houllier there for Liverpool? Surely Hodgson had a worse record than them? Edited 5 June 2020 by StanSP

They were joint managers for a time until Houllier took over full time. According to wiki https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roy_Hodgson#Liverpool Hodgson had a 41.9% win ratio. The Bear Posted 5 June 2020 Share Posted 5 June 2020 Ah. Teary Terry. Only put in charge because we were useless at trying to find a manager after we sacked McCarthy.

Man this is what I hate about modern football. We have an incredible season but the top teams just reinforce and open up the gap again. Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner added to that Chelsea team is really scary. They've already got the nucleus of a decent squad and that is just going to improve them even more. Chelsea haven't had a truly world class striker since Costa left so having someone that prolific up front with someone as creative as Ziyech in the team... they are going to be a force. Perhaps they won't catch the top two but with the signings Chelsea and Man U are making and the addition of European football it's hard to see us breaking top 4 next season (assuming we hold on this season) We’ll definitely struggle to get top 4 next season IMO. Chelsea will be good, but hopefully Lampards inexperience will come back to bite them. Either way it’s nice to see top talent continue to come to England, even if it is for rivals. Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 6 June 2020 Share Posted 6 June 2020 I was a bit too young (10/11 or so) to appreciate the whole situation at the time, but why does Bassett's name never come up with any derision when discussing that period of disaster? It's not like he didn't have enough time judging from the amount of games he oversaw. Is it just widely accepted that Taylor's damage was irreversible? We was pretty much down in the first game of the season v Bolton. and the fact that he came in with Mickey Adams who went on and did reasonably well has shielded form any real criticism. I just love the fact 49 teams have competed in this division over the last 28 years alone. You just can't beat the highs and lows of English football when it comes to sport and the memories it creates for fans - if only for one season like some of these clubs. Corky Posted 6 June 2020 Share Posted 6 June 2020 Does need some context though- Royle was the only manager at Oldham, one of the smallest clubs to play in the Premier League, so he's the best as well as the worst. I doubt many at Oldham think badly of him. Not surprised at a lot of the names on there now they've been brought up, Bassett took over an absolute mess at our place and although we showed glimpses of improvement over a couple of games, we then had a shocker (4-0 v Southampton the standout). The home defeat to Derby was particularly depressing and shambolic too. We were expected to have Harry Redknapp instead, who knows how that would've panned out? Possibly, but he may have kept us up and we moved into the new ground in the Premier League. I don't rate him particularly highly but he does have a galvanising effect so it may've saved us from relegation. Having sat through the first match against Bolton however, even the best managers around would've struggled with that squad. By half time they looked completely shot of any remaining confidence left.

Ive always stuck up for Dave Bassett. He took over an absolute shattered shower. Nobody couldve arrested the nosedive Taylor had put us in. he did then go on to mentor Adams as DoF the following season's promotion and worked absolute wonders in the transfer market with his wheeling and dealing with all the parachute money and all the promotion money taken by the administrator; Dickov, Deane, Gillespie, Bent, Ferdinand, Thatcher... persuading Summerbee and McKinley to play for free. Bassett's influence was even more stark when he left....and Adams on his own had his car crash summer after relegation
