Always thought we played Ready To Go because of the people standing on bentleys roof. Absolute tune and should definitely be brought back.

I'm starting to think it's time to assign the family stand as the sit on your hands, miserable old bastards stand. Get them all in one place and stop them feeling so awkward that other people actually like to stand and have a good time. I see other grounds, other ends where it's non-stop standing or at the very least for all the set pieces and goal mouth action and I wonder why it takes so much for our lot to get involved and join in. BTW if getting them involved involves playing Sweet effing Caroline, it's a step too far, they can press eject on the stadium tape player and bin it. It's not an England match. It's not the summer. Get the Leicester tunes on.

The Marks Electrical Miserable Old Bastard Stand just for nostalgia

Absolutely loved it. All the pre match music should have blue in the title or song, there’s loads of them. I remember them doing it for a short while at Filbert St, 90’s ?

Nope, and now I’ve got it into the Mrs head and she’s moaning at me because she can’t stop singing it lol

I can see Sweet Caroline being the new clappers tbf.

The "you're doing fun wrong" crowd are going to hate it. Let's be honest, it is objectively cheesy rubbish. We all know that. It's a little tacky and it's a little cringey.

Now tell me how many of the people stood around you joined in? How many people in the posh seats and the family stand and the quietest areas of the ground joined in?

There's a reason they play it at countless sporting events all round the world. There's a reason it's always at the start whilst everything is building up. It gets people to participate. It gets people warmed up. It lowers their inhibitions a little and makes them feel more comfortable singing.

We've got about 25 to 30 K people in the ground on the average match that obviously don't feel like making much noise and are pretty self conscious about it. If you can whack on one cheesy ballad to get them to loosen up a bit I think that's probably worth having a few ultras that take themselves a bit seriously bristling with annoyance for a few minutes.

I noticed a few people in the Musical Traditions poll thread I started saying uncharacteristically complimentary things about the Welsh. Nice. But you know what the key to a good atmosphere and good singing is at the Millennium Stadium? Bread of Heaven, Delilah, Hymns and Arias, songs that literally everyone knows and everyone enjoys joining in on - even old Mrs Jones down the front.

If you've ever been at a party, bar, pub or club and you've had a few and joined in the chorus of Living on a Prayer out of sheer peer pressure despite the fact you tell everyone you hate the song and you feel dirty afterwards, you know exactly why Sweet Caroline is a smart addition to the pre game.

🤷

I have said in other threads that Sweet Caroline is a song I cannot stand so I'll always be biased against it. I know it gets the crowd going but it'll never be something I get behind, whereas the clappers, whilst hated now, were effective for 18 months or so.

This version absolutely works as a anthem, just need the club to persist with it now and it’ll really take off… last night was good… it’ll get even better.

....I really feel the problem is that our supporters cannot hold a tune!!!

That link was terrible, great to have an anthem,  it just seems that every one of or chants we have, seem to sound badly out of tune. If we had YNWA as our song, we would still murder it. We can't hold a chant or a tune, that is why we struggle for an anthem, we are incapable of maintaining a tempo or a tune.

I mean don't get me wrong it's a shit song, I mean Neil fvcking Diamond, really.

But it's blown up over the last decade at sporting events and it clearly works to get people to loosen up a bit.

Of course we can! On our way to Albania is in tune, isn't it? Perhaps it's accents, but it's great when sung along over the PA as most other clubs do.

I enjoyed WYS being played before Kick Off. I wasn’t sure how it would feel beforehand, given that the version it is quite slow and droney as a single, but what they played, for the length they played it, I thought fitted very well. I certainly wouldn’t want it sped up, or you’d inevitably decrease volume and participation through people struggling to splutter the words out. It worked as an anthem with that timing.

As for Sweet Caroline: Mixed feelings. I’m not overly keen on song choice, not because I dislike the song but because it’s not ours. Similar to Chelsea Dagger, I guess. But I did notice people getting involved with it and it’s another easy song to sing along to, which is half the battle.

Overall though, a note of credit to the club for trying last night. I don’t know whether it was someone different on the decks, but the music this year has often been genuinely atrocious so I’m glad they’re trying.

Overall:

WYS - More of that, please.

Sweet Caroline - Right sort of lines but maybe keep your options open.

It was my first game since just before Covid WYS was fantastic,  I just presumed the pre match had changed a while ago it went down so well

It was played as the generic tune back then as common as Sweet Caroline is now. I think it was mostly associated with Sunderland the last time they had any success. Been there, done that, don't need it again.

Worked well but unfortunately there will always be whingers that dig their heels in because it's not <insert favourite band>. Doubt very much that many Liverpool fans put Gerry and the Pacemakers on their turntables when they get home either but they all get behind YNWA. Best to just ignore the bores and get behind this version. It's the best we've got for the time we're living in.

I liked it, most of these “anthems” are recycled around clubs, it’s actually nice to have something we’ve generated ourselves. So I’m all for it. What we need to do is stop playing shit like Ed Sheeran, and more stuff like Republica, stone roses, oasis, blur et al. That’s football music.

No good music exists outside of the 90's 😏

Not for football no! Wouldn’t be against any classic rock to be fair. But Ed Sheeran and George Ezra make me want to throw up all over the gaff.
