Ben Chilwell

I've criticised Chilwell in the past but today he really was up against it with DeBruyn and Mahrez running at him. Barnes and the midfield didn't really help him at all.

Of course he was identified as a week link by Guardiola , especially his right foot , that is why Mahrez played. Mahrez has pulled off the cut in and shoot trick so many times we should have set up properly to stop it, other teams have. That is down to Rodgers.

Really wasnt much Chilwell could do yesterday, was hung out to dry. Once Mahrez is moving its near impossible to show him outside unless you've got another player directly inside the left back which neither Maddison or Barnes did (tbh no idea what either of them did defensively yesterday).

The perfect illustration of why you play Maddison on the left against better teams and have Choudhury or Praet playing. That way Maddison can drift inside and keep taking up his 8/10 position as Choudhury/Praet is in the space that De Bruyne kept occupying and allows Chilwell wider so he faces Mahrez up straight the way which makes him much easier to defend against.

Exactly, with Hamza on the bench he could have brought him on for Perez as soon as Chilwell started to struggle.

Good players have bad games. He had a bad game. Doesn't make him a bad player.

There's very few LBs I would swap him for. If any.

Just think people are way OTT questioning the players, manager and tactics. We came up against a fresher, desperate Man City side that cost about 5 times what our side did and we lost. No need for all this negativity.

He is a very good attacking player but in a team that does not play a back three you have to be able to defend and his really inexcusable right foot is a glaring weakness. Against teams with a player like Mahrez who loves to cut in he has to have support. Rodgers team selection was wrong and against Liverpool with Salah, who will attempt to do the same thing no doubt he will correct that. I am pretty sure Man. City would have won that match anyway but with the right team it would have been less one sided.

My bigger concern with Chilwell is actually his crossing ability, or the serious lack of it!

funny how he doesn't seem to have a problem crossing with England, could it be that they actually get multiple players in the box instead of just the striker?

Carragher got it right that his starting position was off ten wrong but he was left isolated with Mahrez the whole game and Mahrez will make any left back look silly if he has that space

If Chilwell had gone wide and left KDB, possibly yhe best attacking midfielder in the world in that much space Carragher would have ripped him for that instead and rightly so, his starting position was what it was because Maddison (it was his side of midfield) didn't track KDB back, had Barnes tracked Mahrez that would have helped too, Brendan failed to make the tactical change needed to solve the problem

He’s been found out that he can’t defend and teams are exploiting that. He’s decent going forward but defensively he’s a shamble. I hope he isn’t England’s first choice left back at the euros that’s for sure 😂

He had a poor game but playing Maddison wide left is nonsensical. It nullifies Madders himself and it leaves Chillers completely exposed. That said, Ben was rubbish tonight but then all bar Wilf was imho.

I agree it leaves him exposed but you can’t make simple defensive mistakes at this level like he does. Fuchs needs a run.

I think he’s getting too much stick for tonight’s performance. He’s been hung out to dry tonight. He’s been asked to mark Salah and TAA by himself, of course he’s going to be ripped to bits. The tactics tonight have made him look a lot worse defensively than he is.

He's been killed by his manager 2 games in a row

Fuchs has to start Ben  is miles out of form and lacking character.

played like a league two player tonight.

Fuchs would have been ripped apart even worse than Chilwell in the last 2 games then Chilwell was ,why is it our fans have to turn on any player that comes through our academy, had we bought Barnes and Chilwell from United's academy and they played for us the same amount of time they wouldn't get half the stick they get now, its pathetic

Pretty much this. He's in no way responsible for the failure tonight.

Rodgers has to take some blame for the setup tonight. Chilwell got no help at all and part of that was down to Maddison playing LW which is not comfortable when his best moments come centrally.

As a person he obviously is a nice lad and has character what I meant was in terms of being under pressure against the very best he has shown a lack of it in recent games, going into his shell to much.

He is a very nice lad but you need that edge, he can get it but he needs to find it under pressure more often if he wants to be a england left back long term.

cannot believe anyone is having a go at chilwell. trent is literally the best attacking full back in the world, and salah is probably the best right winger in the world. and we have said to chilwell yeah, can you defend both of these by yourself.

most teams genuinely triple if not quadruple up on that duo and we went the complete other way and left him there completely by himself. it was ludicrous management.

tbh i can’t believe any player on our team is getting it in the neck tonight. this all falls purely at rodgers’ feet for choosing an absolutely suicidal starting line up.
