I imagine Wes is more of an example setter who would turn out for the FA Cup / early rounds of Carabao Cup, with the others competing for actual places. Benkovic seems like he's lost a lot of time due to injuries, so having cover is important. Remember when bombscare Benny ended up playing a number of games for us in a row? I don't think we want a repeat of that scenario. Also we might want to play a back 3 more often as we did against Newcastle. We looked very good in that system actually so wouldn't be against seeing it more often.

I doubt he will play next season unless it’s a league cup/fa cup game vs lower league opposition

That's what I mean -- He wasn't even in the squad the squad the first half of the season, since Ranieri was trying to force him to move, but we had no options after Hernandez (remember him? Not even our worst signing that window) skipped town in January. I know Rodgers likes a tight squad, but yikes, even now we seem short on CB cover, especially given he sometimes likes to go three at the back.
Popular Post Frost Posted 3 January 2020 Popular Post Share Posted 3 January 2020 Honestly, the more I think it through the more sense it makes, I think it'd help at both ends of the pitch. Demiral fits the mould of a typical Leicester signing in being young, playing senior international football and coming with a good reputation, but importantly it'd give us flexiblity in being able to apply 3-5-2 more regularly with three top class CBs. We'd be able to get better attacking width from Chilwell & more crucially Ricardo if we didn't fancy the Barnes/Perez combination which in all honestly hasn't been prolific, though not a disaster either. If we can't secure a top class winger in this window (which will be difficult) then this might be the best idea for Rodgers. I'm not sure how it would affect Vardy by playing two up top frequently, but ultimately it at least gives us a different option and we can play Perez & Iheanacho in their more natural positions. The main plus here though is that we'd have the chance to rotate between Soyuncu/Evans/Demiral even if we continue to play with two CBs, and we'd not rely on the ageing Morgan as third choice (who is likely to leave us in the summer) and Benkovic can go on loan to a Championship club to get some much needed first team football. Demiral is keeping De Ligt out of the Juve team at present but he's Juve's second highest earner behind Ronaldo, so transfer fee aside Sarri is under massive pressure to get the best out of him alongside Chiellini (with Bonucci third choice). I think Sarri actually said he was being rested as he's played a lot of football over the last calendar year. I think Juve want around €40m for us to form the potential Turkish Wall so I assume that's why we initially offered a loan with an option to buy, but let's see what happens. I'd rather go with quality at a higher price than an average back up who'll still cost £15m+. Competition for places is a good thing, which you can't say we have right now at CB.

If someone offered me Demiral this window and nothing else I'd take it in a heartbeat. We can look at the wide player problem in the summer. He gives us the option of playing three at the back, top quality cover and even if we played 2 CB's over 50 games next season the three CB's could average 33+ games each. He's 21 and we could have the "Turkish Wall" for years. it's important to have a top quality reserve in position like the CB and the No8's in CM as we play two players in those positions so it's much easier to keep three players happy over a season than it is a position that we only need one player like GK, LB, RB. CDM, FW, etc.

Deeg67 Posted 4 January 2020 Share Posted 4 January 2020 It does sound like 3 at the back is something Rodgers wants to have the option to use semi-regularly. With the CL and using that formation a good chunk of the time, there’s room for one more starting caliber defender and Benkovic both in the squad. With Brendan Rodgers team in second place in the standings, the club is looking to add Merih Demiral, they presented an offer to Juventus who need to decide what to do." David Amoyal (DiMarzio staff writer) goes on to explain in his tweets that obviously they'd rather sell Rugani and it would probably take €40m for them to consider selling Demiral. Dortmund have just sold 5th choice CB Weigl and have Hummels, Akanji, Zagadou and Balerdi, so I'm not sure where he fits in there. I get the feeling it could (could) be an agent or Juventus ploy to get us to up our offer and get the deal done? Di Marzio were right all the way on Praet and were also the first to break Benkovic signing from Zagreb. They're also very close to Juve. I hope we sign Zagadou instead, purely for the ready made chant.
