AFCON being moved back to January

Recommended Posts

Fifa set this precident by accepting the bribes from Qatar (bet they struggled with their consciounces for almost 10 seconds) knowing that it would be impossible to play football in that desert (in every sense of the word) during the summer.

So now every tournament organiser will feel its OK to move to whatever time of year suits.

But what do we fans matter, the most important thing is Backhand Blatter and his underworld cronies got their bribes.

But at least there is sufficient notice to find or develop cover for Wilf, anyway none of our present team will be here in 12 months.... It was in the papers so it must be true.

In this example it’s been caused by FIFA’s planned World Club Cup taking place in the summer of 2021

Well, at least it's funny imagining what Klopp will do without his two goalscorers!

Probably will have signed Havertz, will have Firmino, Origi, Shaq etc etc. Probably best to worry about ourselves before we attempt mocking a team unbeaten for over a year. 🤔

FIFA & AFCON,might find a new generation of Stars will be rebuffed, and the game and players in Africa will suffer.Or Top African players earning their bread across Europe or S.American might decide to opt out und retire from International duties...or even Take up New citizenship....!!!

A lot can happen in a year, and I have a sneaky feeling (perhaps it's just hope) that either the tournament will be moved or (perhaps more likely) players will be given the option to opt out.

none of them will take the option to "opt out". they all want to play for their countries.

No such thing can happen, the tournament is in the FIFA calendar and as such takes priority, the rules are that if a player (not otherwise retired from international duty) refuses to play then they are also banned from playing for their club in the same time period.

Probably much a do about nothing this, if I recall correctly the tournament has only been played once in the summer months so it'll just revert back to the way it always was.  Some clubs will be picky about signing African players as a result, similar to how Alex Ferguson was but it's such a rich continent in terms of footballing talent now that it's not as if these guys will struggle to sign for top clubs.

You are probably right, but as much as players want to play for their countries (particularly players actually born in said countries, rather than those ‘adopted’ in adulthood), the same players have complained in the past that playing AFCON in mid-season could cost them their places at their various club (and not because of retribution but due to competition at their clubs or injury). In fact, someone like our own Yak Aiyegbeni reportedly “retired” from international football in the run-up to the 2006 AFCON only to subsequently resurface (un retire) thereafter, Ultimately, there has to be a compromise that makes sense for all parties.

That’s a very good point, that’ll likely be the main driver as watched a fair bit of the last one and the stadiums were absolutely empty.

Unless when the host nation or one with a huge local expatriate population is playing (and doing well), AFCON stadiums are usually mostly empty.

It has rapidly gotten worse since the tournament expanded from 8 to 16 and currently 24 participating teams. AFCON money comes from TV deals (with a considerably large viewership across the continent) and sponsorships, not from the gate.

Losing Wilf will be problematic as we've seen... :(

Losing Nacho could also be a problem. He's been in and out of the Nigeria squad, but if he continues playing well for us (meaning we need him) he will likely get called up.

At least we can make AFCON jokes again.

What about Nigerian age jokes? can we do them again?

If teams aren’t happy with this, they’ve got 2 transfer windows to address it.

It’s football .....

You can hardly expect them to run around for 90 minutes in Cameroon in June / July.

Of the current players at the club, we’d potentially have N’Didi, Ihenacho, Amartey, Slimani, Ghezzal, Diabate, Muskwe and Leshabela.

I’d like to think, come January, we’ll have shipped a few of those out and others won’t impact the first team. At this stage, this won’t really impact us, as hard as it will other teams.

Cameroon is in the tropics and as such their driest and hottest season is from December to May. So the weather excuse is complete balooney. Ahmed² is probably the only one making money out of this change, we are talking about someone who was caught red-handed taking bribes. Players based in Europe should look after their interests and stick 2 fingers up and remain with their clubs.

A bit of a shock in Jurgen Klopp being unhappy about this..

I completely understand what he’s saying, if only he had some money and a couple of transfer windows to ensure he had a squad capable of managing the demands of losing players to the tournament.

Oh wait.

Never fully understood why they'd schedule this during the European season when their top players are all at big European clubs.

I imagine it has a lot to do with heat especially in North Africa. Obviously less of an issue if held towards the equator or make problems worse when held in Southern Africa. I do think though it’s wrong to criticise other continents for not conforming to the European schedule.
