Wes Morgan Lined Up for Executive Role

Recommended Posts

The guy is unquestionably a legend, I hope to see him around the club for along time in whatever capacity.

Notice on the link above we don’t have a senior person with a community focus. Could fit Wes quite well?

Given the new training facilities and emphasis that will be placed on developing our own talent. I’d imagine some sort of “Academy Director” role will be created.

I know we have youth development teams and heads of academy. But they’re focussed solely on the football side.

Having someone to work on getting us the right staff, partnerships, equipment, and even helping in persuading scholars to join LCFC will become a highly valuable role.

Yeah in general I have no idea what executives do. Jointly make decisions re the Premier League, 15 quid matches, etc? Anyone enlighten me?

Anyhow I think it would be good to have a footballer, and one who led us to world fame and fortune, on the board, rather than a executive who may have less interest in the game itself.

Yes it may have potential. The definition of an executive would appear to be:

relating to or having the power to put plans or actions into effect.

I would think for all actual physical football matters, plans and actions then our 'executive' is our manager Brendan. We already have an established scouting and recruitment team and unless Morgan has some hidden financial expertise, I think we're sorted with experts there too, mainly Susan Wheelan. If he's no longer captain, then his influence would rightly start to wane in the dressing room as there would be a new captain.

Executive in this case therefore tends to be a mealy mouthed cover all term that appears not to actually mean that much. There may of course be some kind of ambassadorial role but that's also a bit of an all embracing term. Essentially he's a very respected good guy who would seemingly be paid to 'hang around' for payment with a very loosely defined portfolio.

Birch can’t go on forever, and I cannot think of a better long term replacement than Big Wes!!

Not sure about this, Birch is a great charector and has the "gift of the gab" and Wes seems very intelligent and would be best suited in an executive position for the club as stated. Vardy has to be the replacement for Birch surely! Would be hilarious!

I reckon Vardy will be the lead for Birch’s role - skittles-vodka for all! 😆

On a serious note I can see Wes being an Academy Director to promote the LCFC philosophy to those coming through the ranks, and could have a business-like role there too (and I can imagine he’ll get all the support he needs in business from Top). There is no-one better suited for that IMHO.

Wes has always said he likes "business" -- when you think of where LCFC want to be in 5-10 years, I could see him doing a lot in the high-end side of things: Working with corporate sponsors; brand expansion, etc.

No one better to know ins and outs of playing staff that club captain for last 7/8 years which could help bring in sponsors etc

We'd need to give the poor sod about 4 microphones to make him heard lol

Wes is a quiet, intelligent lad. Not a big personality.

Not surprised he's being considered for a role like this.

Key to the executive karsi incoming for Big Wes !! ....   you always know you’ve made it when you get one of those.   Many moons ago I remember my first trip into one with a copy of The Sun tucked under my arm ...  plenty of room ..  no one banging on the door ...  and a slightly less revolting odour.   Mind you the bog paper was still fairly rough which was a great disappointment ...

Thanks for finally breaking through the closely guarded organizational/functional structure of the LCFC upper ranks.  Such a “loosely defined”, “mealy mouthed” thing …  now I see why we’re universally considered such a poorly run club.

I guess folks like  Andrew Neville (Football Operations Director) and Nick Oakley (Strategy Director) can be let go immediately, as they also seem to be without portfolio?  That'll save us a few quid.

It’s Whelan BTW.

Not so. Both Football Operations Director and Strategy Director are easily definable posts and with the exception of the word 'Football', can be found within other industries. The former though is also separately defined and is easily searchable on Google.

You spot on with my spelling inadequacies however 😁

Why does he need a specific job role?

The board of directors has lost (and not replaced) both Vichai and Supornthip Choungrangsee, who were part of the decision making team, in the last 3 years. Top and Tal are marooned in Thailand for the moment, and will likely want to commit more time to the King Power business first while LCFC remain relatively stable and our main sources of revenue are maintained.

It leaves the club with Whelan (CEO) as the only active board member in the country; with Rudkin and Neville also likely involved in key decisions. It would not hurt to have Morgan as executive director who can perhaps be a front-facing member of the board, talk to the press (improve our commercial brand), be a useful ally for Rodgers on the board, and so on.

If he wants to be involved in the business side of things, I'm sure having the club's greatest ever captain would help us.

Vardy would be a great shout for Birch2.0 !!

Maybe Big Wes, with his quiet authority, can be the straight man with Birch in the interim?

We need long term succession planning in all areas of the match day squad!! 😆👍

We don't need a matchday Birch, reading out crap speeches and meeting former players. The off the field Birch, going to functions, funerals, outings, behind the scenes stuff I'm sure Morgan would be perfect for.

I think having former players, or recently retired players, staying in non-coaching roles is a good way forward.

I fear they've got the embarrassment that does half time fan cam lined up for it, for that reason I hope Birch doesn't go anytime soon.

Only seen him once at the cup game v Wigan.Did he used to be on the telly, just recognised the face?
