You’re right it’s not necessarily realistic to spend £200m on a stadium. However it is realistic if you factor in the cost of a new arena, hotel, private accommodation, separate retail unit and the stand expansion. The club has been developing a 185 acre former golf course site next to the A46 north of the city which it says will be one of the best facilities in world football. It has released very little information about progress on switching its training from Belvoir Drive, in Aylestone, to the new centre near Seagrave, but council papers published today say the club is to start moving into the new base on December 9. There could however be a snag which needs resolving before the Foxes get the green light to move in. When the club was granted planning permission for the complex, it was on the condition that it carried out safety improvements at the nearby crossroads where Park Hill Lane meets the A46. Residents said the junction was already dangerous for motorists and that extra traffic - players, club staff, and fans wanting to watch matches in the 499-seat show pitch - would make it worse. The club agreed it would fund changes to the junction before it moved in, but that work has been delayed. Now it is seeking Charnwood Borough Council’s permission to move before the junction work is completed. That will see the central reservation modified with a give way line for vehicles turning right into Park Hill Lane. This would also allow cars or larger vehicles to wait in the central reservation to ensure they do not encroach into the carriageway. Councillors will meet next week to discuss whether that should be allowed. Leicester City’s transport consultants have outlined a package of measures they say will reduce the use of the junction by traffic associated with the club and planning officers have indicated that they are content with that and have recommended planning committee members vote accordingly. The team and the staff will be briefed and reminded to avoid the use of the junction via social media and WhatsApp groups. There will be more than 180 TV screens and displays around the training ground which will remind people not to use the central reservation. Those staff who do not heed the message could face internal disciplinary action. Signs will be placed and surveys carried out weekly to check no one flouts the rules. The club says drivers heading to the ground from the city will be able to turn off to the left using the slip road but those coming from the north will be instructed to continue past the junction for more than two miles then use the A607/Fosse Way roundabout to double back on themselves and access it from the south. Vehicles leaving the training ground and heading to Leicester will have to drive three miles north before turning round at the Six Hills junction to return south. The club has indicated the junction work will be complete by early March. But they are still turning off at that junction. They just have to go further up or down to ensure they only ever turn with the flow of traffic, not across it.
