he is going to be our number 1 this season that is a fact.

If we have a good season HE is in the strong position with us in contract talks.

Contracts protect the player but they also protect the club.

Based on?

1) We over pay and have done for years

2) He came though when we were a PL club so would have been on a decent wedge

3) As a free agent he could get a decent signing on fee abroad.

I bet he's getting paid above the championship average wage.

At this level, he’s fine and if I’m being honest as much as he’s not done a great deal this season, he’s actually not done anything wrong. Provides a bit of balance to the back line, along with bulking up a little bit he seems a bit stronger this season.

Which has been the issue we a lot of our business over the last few years.

Coady was seen as fine a championship level, BDCR was seen as fine at PL level.

Obviously still lots to improve on and if we were in the prem now we’d certainly need to upgrade.

I think one of the most important things about this is that he actually knows what it means to play for the club.

What does that actually mean?

And going on what they’d produced at that level, how were we to say anything otherwise. You only need to look in the threads of both when they signed to see that this was the general consensus.

What more do you expect? Sign someone with a crazy transfer fee on double the wages Thomas will be on when we aren’t in the position to do so, in a position that wasn’t necessarily a problem because being fine at the level we find ourselves in isn’t ok?

That he knows what it means to play for the club? Someone that cares, wants to be here, knows what the expectation of the blood of the club (the fans) is. Much rather than the recent bunch of mercenaries we’ve had here that are just happy to pick up a wage and “act” professional.

Can't work out this Club sometimes. Been trying to offload him with loans out for a few seasons then hand out a four year contract. Someone's judgement appears to swing whichever way the wind blows.

Much prefer this to letting him leave on a free. Does a job for us, local, academy graduate, and probably worth about 8-10m on the current market. I'd rather keep him then use our limited funds to sign somebody for 8m to replace him.

Had a brilliant cross on him where he first came through

No clue how it has actually managed to get worse when he should be improving

Never improved his physicality enough to make it

Thomas would be fine as a squad player, but aside from his throws he's a bit of a nothing entity at full back. Just a shame he doesn't have that physical prowess you want from a full back because technically he's a very decent player in the final third.

Different managers, Martí seems to like him

Gives a fvck about this club, local lad, yet to really hit his prime and good for this level. Good business as long as the wage is decent.

He’s been decent for the last 9 months, certainly decent enough that it would be bad business to have lost him for nothing.

4 years feels a lot (3 years with the option of a 4th feels more appropriate) but at least he’s of an age that we should still get plenty out of him over that term. This is not akin to 3 years for an ageing Vestergaard.

Hopefully this gives him the confidence to kick on and make that position his for the next few years.

I’ve been a big critic in the past, but this season he’s been ok so far.

At first glance 4 years seems ridiculously excessive, but then I suppose it depends on the wages.
