UEFA again trying to change a great idea that’s worked for years trying to put a few more Million €€€ in their bank account more like what’s next the winners of the trophy play first knocked out team to play for the winners for trophy #Bizzare ??

I’m not sure they are. Uefa like the current format but owing to pressure from the bigger clubs have relented to find a different format.

I’m not sure the “smaller” footballing countries would agree.....

but why not a league system of 18 teams in each league with promotion/relegation. Top 4 in the top division having a S/F then final.

likewise in division 2,3 and so on. In divisions 2,3 and so on, the finalist both get promoted, to the division above, the bottom two relegated. Trophies for the winners of each league.

The 18 teams in the top division coming from Europe’s top x 5 leagues, so the “bigger clubs” get they’re  needs met. But each league still following the Swiss model of ten random league games.

if the winners of division 2 in this format, (let’s say Ajax) do not manage to qualify from their domestic league proper for the following  season, their place is taken from

the next Dutch team in their own domestic league. Likewise if Chelsea relegated from the top division, but don’t qualify outright from their domestic league the following season, then their place taken from an English replacement.

The 18 teams in the top division I think would mean x 3 from each country with x 3 places for teams from counties such as Netherlands, Portugal et cetera.

of course this could be all crap and littered with flaws 😁

The Big Sux clubs who don’t want more games but do want more games?  The teams that worry about their players but actually couldn’t give a fuch about their players?  These aren’t a paradox in a rich mans world.

The managers and players don't but the owners do. Cutting Premier League matches is nothing to do with player welfare- they want to cut some matches to fill the space with others. Bin four matches against Fulham and Brighton to play lucrative Champions League games.

Absolutely love this quote from that:

"We have made it absolutely crystal clear to UEFA and Aleksander Ceferin that allowing clubs to qualify for Europe based on anything other than sporting merit is completely unacceptable and fans oppose expansion of the Champions league,’ said Kevin Miles, chief executive of the Football Supporters’ Association."

Premier League clubs concerned over 'unfeasible' Champions League reform and fixture congestion
Proposals to reform Champions League to increase number of games by 125 to 225 may lead to matches being played over weekends, Premier League clubs fear, with hopes persisting to water down tally to 189

EUROPEAN SUPER LEAGUE

Premier League clubs have major concerns that plans to expand the Champions League will lead to "unfeasible" fixture congestion, and the potential for European matches to be staged on the same day as top-flight domestic games.

Up until now, there has been an agreement with UEFA that there should be no clash between Champions League matches and Premier League games, with the weekend protected for domestic fixtures.

But Sky Sports News has been told there are widespread concerns that UEFA's plans will be unworkable, and may lead to European and domestic games going head to head - especially if proposals are pushed through for 10 Champions League group matches per team from 2024 instead of the six matches currently played.

UEFA has already committed to expanding the Champions League from 32 teams to 36 from 2024. That was voted through without fanfare at their executive committee meeting last month.

We understand the Premier League is currently lobbying UEFA for only two extra matches per team in the group stages instead of the proposed four. That would take the total number of games in the group stages to eight per team.

Under the current system, there are 125 Champions League games in total per season. If the tournament is expanded to include eight group games per team, that would mean 64 more matches - 189 in total (a 50 per cent increase), while 10 group games would lead to 100 more games, and a total of 225 Champions League matches throughout Europe, over the course of the tournament - a 80 per cent increase.

Some officials have told Sky Sports News that such a sizeable expansion could well lead to a drop in UEFA revenue, because broadcasters across Europe might be put off from bidding for the rights to host the tournament. UEFA rules dictate that broadcasters who win the rights must show all matches, and not cherry-pick the best.

The new "Swiss format" which UEFA has proposed is expected to be ratified next month by its executive committee - though there are murmurings among European officials that UEFA may be forced to compromise.

The plans include 36 clubs all in one "conference", whereby each team is drawn to play eight or ten different opponents, based on UEFA's "coefficient" - which means those teams who have done better in European competitions historically will be seeded higher, and play more of their group games against lesser opposition.

The top 16 teams in the conference will then progress to the knockout stages, where the format will remain the same as now. There will no longer be home and away games against the same opposition until the knockout stages.

Elsewhere in Europe, there are concerns that UEFA is pandering to the elite English clubs by offering them more and more places in the Champions League, at the expense of smaller footballing nations. Currently, the champions of 44 European countries have to pre-qualify for the Champions League before they have the chance of reaching the group stages.

Like what I was saying in the post Roma thread, alot of this is about brand. They want big names because it brings in the most interest from viewers and more importantly sponsors. Just look around the edge of the pitches, always emblazoned with the big company names for the prestige, and they pay huge sums to do so. For UEFA to make the most money from their product it has to be as marketable as possible. Man U, Liverpool, Arsenal ect. have dominance in Asia, The US, you can't have lesser teams in there, have to keep the money coming in, more and more and more.

The CL is not as huge as the domestic leagues in the Far East because weekday k/off times in the middle of the night don’t work.

of course they have highlight programmes but most fans will catch up with a couple minutes on you tube etc …….

Like everyone I despise the greedy six. All fans dream about their team one day being able to break into the top six top four or win the league. We all want the best players and have to money to enable this and have the best stadia and facilities. Then once you have achieved this level of success you want to retain it. But not all owners have the morals of the greedy six who want to rig the competition in their favour. The fault primarily lies with these owners who don’t understand the meaning and spirit of true competition and the authorities for allowing the competition to be tainted and slanted towards these corporations who didn’t understand what they were buying into. It’s not the fans of those teams that we should be angry with and many of them feel the same as we do. All of those football reforms promised a year ago have gone on the back burner. It is just not acceptable. We need a louder voice and the government needs to step up.

This is excellent news.

People can moan about the format changes all they like but UEFA, under immense pressure from the greedy ‘big’ clubs, stood up strongly to the Super League threat and have now - as they had to - responded to the outcry about the ‘historical coefficient’ qualifying spots by unceremoniously ditching them.

I see the new format as a realistic and carefully considered compromise.

However….. The irony of Super League ringleaders Real Madrid potentially winning this season’s Champions League (a competition they wanted to destroy) will not be lost on UEFA, who should have banned them, Barcelona and Juventus from competing.
