I've said it before and I'll say it again.

If Arsenal win the Europa League and Chelsea win the Champions League and finish outside the top 4, then 4th place won't be good enough for CL football next season. I'm sure Brendan knows this (I hope so at any rate) and will proceed on the assumption that we need to finish 3rd or 2nd. This will of course change if either Chelsea or Arsenal are kicked out of Europe over the next week or so.

I think most people know this - the ones that don't read won't start reading now :)

From the 538 prediction page:

Chelsea finish worse than 4th (40%), Win CL (19%), Ars win Europa (25%) brings us to 1.9%. I hope no one is worrying about that 50/1 shot.

It's a good aim. Ian's got five games to make the top 10 goal scorers too. He needs about a goal a game to make the top 10.

out of interest what odds would I get on that bet?

Where’s the who cares option. 3rd will do. 2nd just a bonus and will happily take 4th if it means we still qualify for CL

Ask me again after the next 2 PL games

Looking at the fixtures, surely our game again them gets moved to the Wednesday?

You'd think so because of Man Utd's EL game moving their Villa game to the Sunday 9th.

I'd rather it's kept on the Tuesday as it's more rest time before the Cup Final but I doubt it.

Then I presume the Chelsea league game gets moved to Tuesday 18th or Wednesday 19th.

Leeds held them well - even when they sent Pogba and Cavani on. I wonder what effect this whole EFL farce will have had on players who now find themselves the unfortunate associates of sh1ts like Joel Glazer and Ed Woodward. No longer the darling clubs of the suck-up media, but shown to be the saboteurs of the most enduring football association in the world.

The model of these clubs relies on favouritism from TV rights and from a huge plastic fan base - the Glazers are nothing but vulture capitalists creaming off income from an inherently unfair system. The conflict is that the supporters of clubs like ours place great value on the possibility of doing one on United, Man City or Chelsea etc. We assess our team by how well they perform against these teams.

Parity arrives when it no longer is a big deal to win against them. Carragher was at pains to diss the level of skill at City. Did he say we're not even the third most skilled in the Prem? That skill isn't half as important as team spirit. If we can add the confidence to treat them as equals to our spirit then we can make that step up - not to resemble them in any way, but to match them. They cannot match the way our club is run or our development and recruitment. They only succeed by buying in players at vastly inflated prices and salaries, by attracting starry-eyed kids and their starry-eyed parents and by poaching players from clubs who cannot afford to say no.

United can be overhauled, but the odds are against it - however it's not such a gap that it cannot be bridged...with good fortune.

I think Chelsea play Arsenal on the Wednesday before the final. So yeah I'd say our game against United is moved to the same day, with the league game against Chelsea the following week

5,000-1 shots have been known to happen.

I believe we are a better side than Man U. Injuries may have just cost us 2nd place, but I think the chances of us finishing 2nd are higher than for us finishing 5th.

Nothing wrong with aiming higher. Of course the gap to 5th is the most important but we should always look above too.

I'd prefer them to win on Sunday, to finish 2nd we've got to beat them and also have an unlikely slip-up in the other games, it's a big ask but it's not impossible. More than likely out of reach but you never know.

I just want Utd to beat Liverpool this Sunday and roll over for us in a few weeks, don't care what else they do.

I’ll be hoping for Liverpool or the draw, as long as we beat Southampton.

Its in our own hands to get 3rd, to get 2nd and I’d absolutely love to pip United at the end, we need results to go our way.

We can win every fixture left, it’s not unreasonable.

I recall a day when no one was worrying about a 5000/1 shot.   They were good days....

I’d love us to finish second. People can say “who cares”, and that’s up to them, but forgetting the CL spots temporarily, the PL is a league, and it’s always better to come as high as possible in leagues. I’d never think “4th is as good as 2nd” because, well, it isn’t. In terms of squad confidence, attracting players, media perception, BRs “breaking up the big 6” ambitions/goals, 2nd is way better - particularly when you consider the tour de force that is Man City. To be able to earnestly say that we are better than everyone bar Man City is massive.

Obviously 4th is hugely important, but seeing as we can’t affect what happens in other games it’s all moot anyway. But if Liverpool beat Man U there’s certainly an upside for me.
