I don't think there is anything in this, except trying to get some leverage in the contract negotiations.

Man City have a very settled centre-half pairing, he wouldn't be guaranteed first team football.

Nobody goes to Pep’s Man City for first team football, ask Riyad.

We have to accept that he may leave if the big boys come knocking, it happens every summer. But we always have someone lined up just incase, most likely James Tarkowski.

Didn't have a great season with injury and has struggled at times without Evans alongside him. It would be a shame but I don't believe his departure would be detrimental to the club, as we always plan ahead for such an eventuality, and 9.9 times out of 10, it is an improvement to the squad.

Looking at it logically, he’s probably the most expendable ‘high value’ member of the squad.

I really hope, just for once, we keep the core of our squad together and add to it this summer though. In little Wes, Evans and Cags we have 3 very, very good options at CB, and if we can add another we will have brilliant depth in the position.

I know last season wasn't his best but I still think he is one hell of a player.

It only wasn't his best because he was out with a lengthy injury and then a bad bout of covid.

Our defence looked so much worse whenever he was out the side and we conceded a lot more when he was out too.

Really

4 v Spurs

4 v Newcastle

3 v West Ham

3 v Leeds

These were our heavy defeats this year and Soyuncu played in them all.

Had a bad bout of Covid?..

When was that then?

I'm curious, was Evans playing in any of these?

He came on at HT in the Leeds match when we were already 1-0 down.

He also didn't play in:

0-3 vs Liverpool
2-3 vs West Ham
3-3 vs Braga

Plus pretty limp defeats in which we conceded 2 against the likes of Fulham and Everton

I think you're letting the 2 results against Newcastle and Spurs when he was recovering from covid cloud your judgement, because they're recent. He was poor in both those games no doubt, but no worse than Evans or Fofana.

Genuinely flummoxed that people want to exchange Soyuncu for an obviously worse defender in Ake, because he did ok in a relegation battling Bournemouth side that used to concede 70 league goals a season and who has looked miles out his depth at ManCity.

It's irrelevant to the statement that was posted, which was we were weaker when Soyuncu didn't play, which the stats suggest we were weaker.

As we were winning at home against Leeds it can't have been 1 - 0 to Leeds at half time.

Secondly, I've never mentioned wanting to exchange him for any other defender - just stating that defensively we haven't been that secure when he has played this year, that goes for Evans to a certain extent and Fofana.

However, if we were offered say £60m for him, there are equally good defenders out there at half the price.

I was wondering who we'd sell this window... I hope it's not Soyuncu. I can't think of anyone else we'd happily sell for lots of cash and replace reasonably.

And it probably wasn't 'his best' because he was being played out of position on the extreme left of a three. He did a job there when asked for the betterment of the team to the best of his ability. Arguably if we'd have stuck Fofana or Evans out there we'd be saying the same about them. If another team bought him and played him in a four man defence they'd have themselves a top top centre half and we'd be the losers for it.

Thing is, with Evans getting on, we'll need to get in a new centre half soon anyhow. And then also one to replace Cags if he goes.

I always think a player is allowed a bad season. It happens. There's so many factors in it. If he underperforms again or doesn't match his previous output, then we start thinking whether it's a long term trend.

We were already short one CB, as Rodgers appears not to trust Amartey as cover, so that would leave us needing at least 3 CBs!

Playing 3 centre halves really dosen’t suit him, been saying this for months. Soon as we get Justin and Barnes back I hope we revert back to our setup for the first half of the season rather than trying to accommodate all 3 of fofana, soyuncu and Evans in the same team.

...he seemed just as indecisive on the extreme right as well!!!

I think the three is his problem, not the position he is being asked to play within it.

Very reluctant to come too far away from the middle of the defence, he either does not trust that their will be cover should he attempt to engage the attacker in the channel vacated by the Wing Back or unsure of himself in that scenario.

Stopping the ball coming across is the priority, you need to close down  the threat, should no one cover the space you gave vacated well that person has failed to read the game and that aspect needs to be addressed for the player and for the team.

Soyuncu  looks a quality player in a back four, he needs to take that confidence into playing in a back three, he needs to step out of his comfort zone, but we do not excel, as a team, playing with a back three, we look more open and vulnerable.

I hope so. But we’ve sold one player to fund our expenditure these past six or so years. It makes me wonder who it will be.
