The worrying thing is that we were linked with him over a few windows and that indicates to me that he wasn’t a panic buy in the traditional sense at all. Yes, if fully fit we probably wouldn’t have signed him but he was obviously someone that we had been considering for a while (God knows why). Ultimately, we don’t know who Brendan or Congerton have suggested to sign and who the scouting team argue for, but I’m pretty sure I also remember Vestergaard being linked with Celtic? If so, I’m going to pin this one on the former two.

Last night showed why he should not be starting. None of us were really excited by his arrival but some here pointed out that he may be comfortable on the ball and that he may help alleviate our aerial woes. For the first goal, he gives the ball away so sloppily which directly leads to them scoring. For the second, he loses what should be textbook aerial duel vs Kane very high up the pitch and this directly leads to the second. Put a defender in his place who doesn’t make either of those mistakes and we win the game IMO. Additionally, we would probably look tighter throughout the game and not be so easily exposed as we won’t have Vestergaard making lunges high up the pitch and then getting done for pace every five minutes.

Aside from his own glaring deficiencies though, you have to ask why Brendan keeps playing him and why he is clearly asking him to do things that do not suit him e.g, playing a high line, getting him to press their attack/midfield quickly to win it back. Even with a 15-yard head start he would lose a foot race, it’s absolute madness. This also makes you question why Brendan would’ve wanted him in to begin with. He wasn’t good enough for Southampton and was terrible alongside Bertrand quite a number of times and clearly, whatever limited attributes he does have, are not the kind to play the way Brendan wants to. Get him on the bench and at least use this time to develop the kids. Worst comes to worst, we don’t do anything in the league (which is what will happen anyway). But we might actually find a capable U23 player of value to the squad and even if we don’t, we will learn that they aren’t prem quality but will be able to market them to a championship level side and offset our losses with Vestergaard.

Brendan trains the squad and will know who the youth players are

This very long post is pointless really. Rodgers plays Vestergaard because he has no other choice.

The recruitment in the summer was just poor. There’s no getting away from it.

I agree that the recruitment was poor but it’s just all the more mystifying if Brendan played any kind of role in the recruitment. It’s otherwise a massive howler from our own scouting team and whilst we have signed some stinkers, you could at least often see some kind of rationale which explained why they might have been deemed a prospect.

We will have to agree to disagree on whether Rodgers has a choice. Yes, we are down to barebones but he doesn’t have to play five at the back when we have a defensive injury crisis. You could put an extra body in midfield in place of Veste or you could go more gung-ho and replace him with a youngster. Maybe I’m missing something, but I can’t honestly imagine what he sees in him in training + match day performances (which matter more). I know we can be guilty of making some players into scapegoats but he’s not once shown yet that he’s of the level required and he’s prone to making game changing errors on a regular basis. I honestly don’t see the point in continuing to start him. Any experience he has over a youngster clearly didn’t help him/the others to see the last 5 seconds out.

Vestergaard had some good moments during that tournament, but he was singled out by every single opponent as the weak link in that defense - obviously not helped by the hyper offensive Mæhle next to him.

End of the day, international tournament football is a lot slower than the Premier League too.

Finland, Russia, Wales, Ukraine and the Czech Republic aren't exactly bustling with electric, world class forwards either.

Plus, let's be fair, the entire Danish squad was galvanised to fever pitch. Don't think I've ever seen twenty plus guys all look that motivated to do anything, ever. Was impressive. A fair few of them were lifted well above their own personal par.

Do you ever question Rodgers?

Do you ever wonder why?

Why we signed Jannick and Bertrand, after watching them ship 9

I’m sure Bertrand saw Red that night after about 15min his incompetent tackling saw an onslaught of goals that rainy night in Southampton.

Injury crisis or no injury crisis he shouldn't be playing. He is a total liability.

Hamza, a player who can't get a game in his natural position and who we've been trying to sell for the last few windows, was head and shoulders above him again last night. I reckon he even won more headers.

playing in the pl is all about oppourtunity. hes the PERFECT example. no where near prem standard. could have brought players from morocco and theyd have done a better job. hes just not up to it. my problem is i bet we wont sell him as long as rodgers is here because hes an egotistical maniac

If he is ever selected again, heaven help us, the full back on his side will just have to stay at home, not venture into the opposition half at all and be ready to tuck inside and cover. It will slit our throat as an attacking threat on that side of the pitch but we'll have to do it. When you're paying 70,000 a week for a regular full international you shouldn't have to but....we have to :dunno:

I try my best to be positive about players we sign and give them time. But he’s just not up to it.

it’s not just his pace, he doesn’t win headers, he doesn’t seem bothered at times.

The polar opposite of what we need, can’t really blame the bloke he just doesn’t fit with our style at all

Yeah exactly this. Not angry at him at all. Just lazy scouting from the club and Brendan persisting with him to the detriment of the team

Watch how he steps up for absolutely no reason and then drops off for the 3rd goal, leaving the space for Kane to turn and pass and for Bergwign to run into.

Hopefully someone decked him for it in the changing room after the game. ****ing outrageous. You don't see mistakes like that at Sunday League level let alone the Premier League in front of 30,000 people paying your wage.

Has anyone watched him when at Borrusia, Southampton or Denmark and he had a commanding and collosal game? If so, please rack your brains and tell me who it was against and the year. I'm going to find the full match online and rewatch it, I have to see what it would take in a game for him to not be hugely exposed and a total liability.

I watched his games in Euro 2020 last summer and he was still anything but.solid and commanding.

Children in calipers would give him a problem.

You may find this hard to believe but I have actually been to a Gladbach game where he scored from a corner!

Gives the ball away for the 1st, didn’t win the header for the 2nd and should’ve nailed Kane for the 3rd.

The pass for the first goal is so bad. It's not a difficult pass and I'd back the players of old who were defenders & not footballers (Simpson, Morgan, Huth) to be able to make it.

That's what Brendan bangs on about in terms of why we signed him. I've seen glimpses of some decent passing but yesterday was so poor.

Yep, the Manager might tell him he should play a high line, but after 5 mins of being ripped to pieces, the player should be honest to himself and the manager and sit back deeper.

...the only problem with that is he is the last defender playing everyone onside, or his lack of pace prevents him from getting out quick enough to play an attacker offside!!!

With a great deal of luck and bits of quality we nearly pulled off the great steal.

To have thrown it away in this manner, is very much comparable to our top 5 finishes. From where we were and what we had gained it was criminal to go and lose it all.

...but why play him in a highline!!!

With the problems and availability we are having you have to adjust to him and eradicate his limitations!!!

Having  Hamza in a backline to cover him, due to his lack of pace, only serves to give us problems, in an area we are far too weak to be drawing attention to.

Silva was worse for me, double the cost.

Akinbiyi, Benkovic, Matt Mills also worse too given the circumstances. Benkovic may seem harsh because he was plagued by injuries, but he didn't make one league appearance for us. Throw Slimani in there too.

Spot on. Brendan should adapt the system to suit the players we have available. To be honest, it's not even 'the system', in terms of the formation, we should just adopt a lower block with a quicker transition to the break. less knocking it side to side.

Last night keeps going around in my head like a continuous circle of disappointment and raw negative emotion.

So to cheer you all up (and me) … Can any of you remember the forum poster from a few months back who suggested we should play Vesty as a CDM! That’s bought a smile to my face, just imagine, literally, just imagine! Love this forum.

Wouldn't put Slimani in the same bracket. We were just overcharged for what he was. Similar to Perez, will never justify the transfer fee but both had their moments
