This is it for me. Obviously he rightly gets stick on here for being slow but there are many examples of slow CBs: Maguire, Dunk, Silva, Tarkowski etc. However, the difference between the above and Vestegaard is that they have a much superior positional sense.

To be fair to the others, they don't have to play in lead boots like vestergaard obviously does.

I never realised he was this bad,

really is absolutely shocking yet is an international player in a very good Denmark team and a regular at Southampton,

he really does leave me scratching my head at how bad he is

If you looked at Southampton's forum SaintsWeb their fans on their posts for over a year when he was there were saying he's s*** and Hasenhuttle wanted to get of him and Bertrand because they couldn't playing his high press system.

He’s horrendous. Simply not fast enough to play at this level and that’s not his fault. But what really gets me is his lack of effort.

The amount of times he’s caught out of position or turned and then just ambles back like he hasn’t a care in the world whilst his team mates are scrambling because of the mess he’s left them in is infuriating.

The third goal yesterday, he’s marking Kane but just steps back away from him, allows him to turn and pick a killer pass at will. If he’s right up Kane’s back not letting him turn and forcing him to play without all the time in the world then the third goal potentially doesn’t happen.

I think Rodgers knows this though. He’s said something about him “playing more than I would have ideally liked” and then called him out in his post-match interview whereas he protected Tielemans a little by just saying ‘an experienced player’.

Absolutely spot on about letting Kane turn. If he can’t win the ball, just foul him. If you aren’t quick as a defender, you have to anticipate and read the game. Just stop the ‘turn’ and you’ve helped the team out

...but it all comes back to the way Rodgers chooses to play him!!!

Why would you ever buy a player that you have to change formation to accommodate unless they are world class

we weaken the rest of the team to allow him to play and he’s garbage anyway

You don't buy someone you have to change formation for, you want to change formation generally and buy players that would fit into that. We started to do a 3atb of Fofana Soyuncu and Evans last season don't forget - the issue is that Vestegaard if he's playing in that system has to be the central centre back, he's too slow to do anything else, and honestly he's not looked competent at the style of defending even in that formation, he's just not good enough

Despite our defensive crisis that was apparent even as early on as in August at the start of the season, even so I'm still rather confused as to why Rodgers signed either of them from Southampton to be honest, especially with his surely knowing beforehand that their best years were behind them and that one of them was a part of the 0-9 defeat we inflicted on them in 2019! I know Vestergaard played in the Euros in the Danish team that reached the semis v England but he's clearly declined since (or his defensive style doesn't suit our formations) and he was well and truly found out against Spurs on Wednesday night. I'd be surprised if he started against Brighton with the likes of Maupay and Wellbeck up front for them......

....that is the problem, we have not made the effort to change the way we play, hence the problem for both parties!!!

It doesn't work for the club and it doesn't work for him.

No.

The mistakes made are unforgivable.

I didn’t watch much of him at Saints. But generally people perceived him as a steady defender. How? What has happened? I think he needs to ditch the concrete boots. Made Kane look rapid at times!!

Saints benched him.  They asked him to sit deeper and get in the way - he could not. The Club has to see that he's done.  Launch him into the sea - he's the worst player in the prem.

Then we paid £19m for him. Absolute fraud.

It doesn't help what we don't sit deep and play to his strengths, we play a high line and try to play possession football, i think Vestergaard would have been much better for us in the 2016 season – but then why sign him? pretty baffling! square peg for a round hole, probably the worse defensive signing we've made, was Benkovic actually worse? if so he must be league 2 level
