I’m just very surprised there’s not been one incline of a new contract spoken about so surely it says the club and soyunchu already know he’s gone? We were talking to tielemans over a year ago about a new contract and they expire at the same time

And sometimes contract extensions just get signed without the pre-match fanfare. Fofana for instance. I didn't even know the club and he were in discussion then, bouf, announcement. Yes, different circumstances, and we obviously wanted to lock him down a bit more but my point is that it can happen on the quiet.

No.  It's the Soyuncu thread 

 

Imo, we only have two centre backs good enough to keep.

 

There is much to like about both Soyuncu and Amartey but both have been regular members of a defence that can't decide whether it's a sieve or a colander.   

 

If we have serious ambitions we need centre backs that are genuine contenders for the first team.   Soyuncu has stopped being that;  his inconsistency has become.a constant.   Amartey is not good enough.

Interesting hearing Rodgers post match yesterday. When asked about the set piece problems he says something along the lines of "You can't give aggression to people who don't have it so I'll sort in summer transfer window" 

 

I think it's pretty obvious that Amartey is never going to be first choice but that's a pretty damning from Rodgers publicly with Cags I feel.  Listen from 1:45

Cags was my favourite city player for a good couple of seasons, a real cult hero. However, this season has done nothing but confirm he’s just not the same player without  Evans alongside him. And that partnership isn’t coming back.

Still love Soyuncu, none of our other defenders come close at launching attacks as he does but he's really had a bad season defensively by his standards.

@Collymore Agree about Rodgers comments on aggression, funny one as I just assume most things are coachable, but once you look at someone like Vardy, someone who ‘did the hard miles’ you can see an aggression, a fire. Could not accuse Dan of that and Cags just looks shot to pieces on confidence.

I thought Fofana looked superb recently driving up the field and going past opponents with the ball more than our attackers do. Soyuncu seems to have regressed with his distribution and reminds me in that sense of Kisnorbo by often launching the ball into touch.

I really want to get behind Soyuncu but it is difficult to do so.

 

It isn't just this season  that he has been inconsistent with poor moments.  

 

Was his moment of madness against Bournemouth two seasons ago?  It contributed to us not getting the champions league.   

 

Of course players make mistakes.   But if the mistakes start to seem consistent as a player gains experience, there is a problem.  

 

For a while, it looked like he could develop as a leader in a great team.   He has been part of a defence that regularly concedes soft goals and is dreadful at defending set pieces.

 

It seems he should be a threat from attacking set pieces but he rarely is.  

 

I was a huge Soyuncu fan.   It has taken time for me to change view but I would not be disappointed if we sold him in the summer.

Fofana is better running with the ball but his passing is standard defender stuff which is absolutely fine packaged with everything else he brings. Soyuncu still launches some superb long range passing that opens teams up, think in the home wins vs Brentford and Palace he did it a lot and was one of the catalysts for us mixing a high press when they had the ball and then the opposition not being able to push up when we had the ball deep in our half to then help restrict the risk of the press when they retrieved the ball because Soyuncu's balls over the top or to the flanks were exposing them massively.

 

He's off anyway, not shown any interest in a new deal since he announced his importance in our team in the first half of 2019/20, missed out on another £30-40k a week for a few years now.

Still love Cags. If he does leave in the summer, which seems inevitable, I'll have fond memories of his time here, despite his disappointing form this season, and will wish him all the very best for the future.
