Hmmm.  No I didn't.  I specifically said I used Stokes as an example of not conflating character with happiness or being able to perform when unhappy, anxious etc.  I specifically said I wasn't talking about individuals sportsman's circumstances but generalising that being unable to perform as a sportsman sometimes does not always mean you lack character or need a boot in your arse. Sometimes it might mean that.  But we certainly can't say that's what Soumare needs.  

 

But as you said to another poster we could talk in circles all day.  We can agree to differ.  We can probably both agree he's better off going to Monaco.

I am not equating Stokes circumstances to Soumare's. 

 

I  am just saying we need to be very careful about judging sportsmen on character when we have absolutely no idea what is going on in their heads.  Being unhappy, being unable to perform because of being unhappy has nowt to do with character surely.  And money really is quite irrelevant to the issue of mental health or wellbeing .

 

Maybe Sourmare is lazy.  Maybe he's homesick.  Maybe he's had issues we aren't even aware of.  Who knows, I don't and you don't.  I'm pretty sure your size 9 won't help though.  

   

However, suggesting a professional anybody should be able to perform just because they earn a shit load of money is an antiquated view in my opinion.  You are, of course, entitled to yours.

I think athletes can feel the heat more than anyone, mainly because pressure is heaped on them from all angles, whereas every day folk like you and I probably put pressure on ourselves.

 

I read an interview with Adam Peaty recently about him stepping away from swimming for a short while to do strictly, to push himself well outside of his comfort zone, and that was mainly down the the pressures of his sport and everything no that comes with it, and the guy is basically unbeatable. 
 

The notion of footballers get paid a lot therefore they must be able to perform all of the time is like you say, is antiquated. It’s still an extremely difficult profession, because once you get to the too staying there is a slog, some players make it look easy whereas others may well be struggling. Michael Johnson is another prime example.

Its a very simple solution, sell and back to the drawing board.

Good shout, I really like Berge. Nothing fancy but gets involved both ends of the pitch and as you say is physical. Would be a good addition but I imagine Sheffield United would ask for similar to what they paid.

A big part of the rarity of player swaps is the difficulty of completing four transactions in one deal.

 

- Club A finds value in both ends of the deal

- Player 1 satisfied to move, concludes agreeable terms with Club B

- Club B finds value in both ends of the deal

- Player 2 satisfied to move, concludes agreeable terms with Club A

 

If there’s a 50-50 chance of making each of those transactions work, it’s only 1-in-16 to complete all four.  So why invest the resources?

Ordinarily I am put out when a player we find surplus goes on to success elsewhere.  This would be the exception.  He’s already well proven in Ligue 1 and may well star for Monaco.  But in most of his appearances here he was miles off the pace.

 

The reasons are by now well discussed -- let’s call it personality, not character, as he’s no troublemaker --- but I am satisfied he would never develop into a starter for us.  If he does go and tear it up in France, I’ll still feel the Club did the right thing.

The problem with football is that everything gets tarred in as ‘personal issues’ 

 

It can be a genuine mental health problem or it can simply be that someone doesn’t like leicester as a place or struggles to build bonds with their team mates. 

 

It’s always a bit too coincidental when it’s a player who hasn’t performed and the manager doesn’t rate though. It’s not like he was doing great then suddenly hit a decline

Because naturally people question why someone isn't performing, which wouldn't be the case for someone playing well as such.

Elite sport is all about small margins.

 

Even being 2-3% off can make a massive difference.

 

People happy to ignore mental health just because some one has mentioned the term homesick. 

 

Whatever has effected him, I hope he gets the help and support he needs to deal with it.

 

Terms like stiff up lip and pull yourself together belong in the past.

Coaches and managers can only do so much.  The player's head is a bigger part of the equation - again imho.

We need to offload Soumare imo.

Whether he has ‘issues’ or not (fook knows…) he’s another recent signing who we just can’t have languishing around the club and making the odd appearance when we are short. 
We aren’t that size of club. 
I think this is very important. As another poster said very saliently a week or so ago (Dan?) we can’t afford to keep signing players who don’t hit the ground running and who have cost a decent sum of money and who are most likely on decent wages. 
The ‘big clubs’ can do this. If there’s anything clear in this transfer window it’s that Leicester can’t.

Things have gone to pot regarding signings over the last year or two. There’s no denying it. Soumare should have been the right player to come into the club and to really push Wilf for that first team spot.

The player I’ve watched has been overweight and really off the pace.

The club must start recruiting better.

Sheff Utd are still paying his transfer fee. They are cash strapped and deffo should be looking at him for a reduced fee.

He was excellent tonight. Looked like the player I thought we were buying in the first place. Strong in the tackle, slick on the ball and able to drive forward with the ball. Also got in a great left footed shot. Maybe Monaco had some scouts at the game?
