Animal rights activists say Leicester should change the name of its famed Pork Pie Island roundabout in the name of veganism. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, (PETA), has made the, apparently serious, call in a letter to City Mayor Sir Peter Soulsby.

It says the roundabout, in Saffron Lane, should be renamed to help promote healthier food choices. They believe it would also send a signal that any animal suffering which goes into making pork pies and other meat treats is unacceptable.

Instead, the group believes the island, which is named after the nearby 1930s Pork Pie Library, should adopt the new name of ‘Vegan Pie Roundabout’. It says the city has a long association with meat-free eating and that the term 'vegan’ was itself invented here.

Senior campaigns manager Kate Werner: "This timely name change would inspire healthier food choices that help the environment, celebrate Leicester’s heritage, and prevent animal suffering. This is not a pie-in-the-sky request.

“Eating a varied plant-based diet has been shown to prevent heart disease, diabetes, abdominal fat, and cancer. Encouraging people to eat plant-based could also help lessen the burden on Leicester’s already overstretched NHS.”

PETA’s claims refer to the publication of a new survey last month which showed that 33.6 per cent of people aged 18 and over in the North West Leicestershire area were obese - that was up on the 22 per cent recorded five years earlier - making the area the most obese in the county. Blaby was the second worst with an obesity rate of 30.1 per cent, with Melton following close behind on 28.8 per cent.

Places in Leicester and Leicestershire which might upset PETA
If Pork Pie Island isn't to their taste, the people at PETA might get the shakes over these place names too:

Foxhunter Island
Bacon Hill
(Sausage) Rowley Fields
New Porks
Coalveal
Newton Burgerland
Smeaton Westerby
Hamilton
Anything with Long Claws-on
And one they might be okay with...

Quorn
Figures such as those have inspired PETA to call for the change. Believing it would tie in with Leicester City Council’s current Climate Emergency Strategy, Ms Werner said the name change would also raise the city's profile.

She said: “The United Nations has stated that a global shift towards plant-based eating is urgently needed. And since the word ‘vegan’ was coined in Leicester by Donald Watson in 1944, it would also be a great way to celebrate the city’s vegan and pie-loving heritage."

Saying the name change would help stop animal cruelty and “inspire residents to choose vegan foods”, Ms Werner said there hadn’t been a better time to end the problems surrounding obesity in Leicester. She added: “PETA would be happy to offer a bountiful supply of delicious vegan pies to the local community to celebrate the name change,” she said.

It's building that resembles a pork pie. It's not an ACTUAL pork pie. Will PETA want to rename the pork pie hat?

To be fair every time I drive past it, for some reason I stop off and buy a pork pie.

The obesity stats are pretty surprising though, 1 in 3 adults obese up from roughly 1 in 5 five years ago. I know lots of people put on a bit of timber during COVID but that's not great. Not sure driving past Quorn Pie Island each day is the solution mind!

There were more than the average 'body positive and proud' folks in the crowd Saturday.

Unfortunately, in addressing obesity we need to actually call it out and people now get offended when hearing. It's a crisis we can't tackle.

Whatever they came up with people would still call it the Pork pie Island for obvious reasons, Everyone I know still calls the Island at Enderby the Foxhunter Island after the pub which is no longer called that.

Should be called Nigel Pearson Island imo

Nigel Pearson should be the renamed capital of Pearsonshire, in United Pearson.

I will vote for the person who stands on that ticket.
