Daveb5569 Posted 20 January 2023 Posted 20 January 2023 Stoke seem to be digging in, don't think they will let him go for £20m. Is he worth that type of money lets face it he plays for Stoke. Surely there must be other and better options for that price.

James Justin came from Luton, Maddison came from Norwich, Vards came from Fleetwood etc... It is possible for teams in the lower leagues to have a talented player capable of playing higher in the league. He’s going to still develop and seems more of a Leicester type of signing. Though doubt Todgers will improve him. But the right coaching he could unlock his potential. Stoke will be asking for quite a bit. But I think £15m + add ons in this market isnt outrageous Edited 20 January 2023 by fox_favourite 1
Jonezy Posted 20 January 2023 Posted 20 January 2023 The reaction from the Stoke fans makes me want this to come true.

Huth cost us £3m and had over 200 PL apps whereas Souttar has never played at a domestic level higher than the Championship, besides which the Stoke we signed Huth from were a decent mid table PL team rather than the bottom half Championship dross they are now, so while I take your point that "he can't be that good if he plays for x" isn't necessarily a solid line of thinking it's not quite the same thing. £20m is probably slightly above the going rate for good Championship centre backs with no top level experience these days so I think it makes some sense to say if they're asking for much more than that, we should maybe consider looking elsewhere. 5
AjcW Posted 20 January 2023 Posted 20 January 2023 £10m plus Iversen on a free loan would do it you’d imagine? Stoke are always difficult to buy from, think everyone forgets how filthy rich the owners are.

This is usually the most telling thing for any signing. I think it's right 90% of the time. Them being gutted makes me happy with this. 5

Makes my blood boil as you just know if he got a run of games we’d be loving him 5

Never any value in buying a player who just looked decent in a major tournament but he seems like great fit for what we need at the back.

If that does happen it'll be interesting to see if we go Ward, Stol, Smithies or go and sign a keeper and push Ward back to two and loan Stol out again.

SafewayFox Posted 20 January 2023 Posted 20 January 2023 (edited) £20m is bordering on “pulled our pants down” territory IMO. I know you spend more on January but surely there are CB’s out there with 6/18 months left on their contracts with top level experience that might be better value for money? Also, I have seen a few post about CB’s that read the game well, not needing pace but ignore how many cards this lad has picked up in recent games - which would suggest he doesn’t read the game like some of the names used as examples. 🤷🏻♂️ Edited 21 January 2023 by SafewayFox 4

JimJams Posted 20 January 2023 Posted 20 January 2023 If it's £20mill do we avoid the desperation and move on? 1
Clever Fox Posted 20 January 2023 Posted 20 January 2023 For 20 million surely that must open up a whole load of other targets with more experience than Souttar. 1
hackneyfox Posted 20 January 2023 Posted 20 January 2023 It’s called haggling, hadn’t we offered £10m? Would you be happy at £15m?
UHDrive Posted 20 January 2023 Posted 20 January 2023 From what I've searched online various pulleys have put our offers at £10mil, £11.1mil, £14mil, £17.2mil & £20mil. I doubt it's £20mil, or rather hope not.
hackneyfox Posted 20 January 2023 Posted 20 January 2023 (edited) How much is each PL position worth, £2.2m? If we don’t have another promising young CB lined up then it’s probably worth paying the difference, another change to the currently appalling defensive line-up could see us move up the league. Livid Posted 20 January 2023 Posted 20 January 2023 We’re desperate, everyone knows we’re desperate. We’re not in the best position to negotiate with clubs who are quite happy to hold onto their players. 4

I doubt the lad is happy staying at stoke while a premier league teams wants him either, works both ways. 1
