Dubai, squad getaway, 13 in action – The latest on Leicester City's international break, with James Maddison and others representing their countries while the likes of Harvey Barnes engage in some warm-weather training

Leicester City may take a trip away next week to help them prepare for the relegation run-in.

While 13 of the senior squad members are away on international duty this week, the others have been granted a holiday to help them recover, mentally as well as physically, from a challenging run of results for the club. They sit 17th ahead of the final two months of the campaign.

They will then return, and manager Brendan Rodgers has said a group camp away from Seagrave has been considered ahead of the trip to Crystal Palace on Saturday, April 1. That starts a run of 11 matches that will decide City’s future.

For now, the squad members not representing their countries have been given time off. But that’s not to say they are totally relaxing. Ricardo Pereira has been working with his regular personal trainer back in Portugal, while Harvey Barnes has been putting in the hard yards in the sweltering heat of Dubai, working with a fitness coach who helped with Wilfred Ndidi’s rehab last summer.

For the players on international duty, the games begin on Thursday. James Maddison will hope to get his second England cap when they take on Italy in their first Euro 2024 qualifier, while Daniel Amartey and Patson Daka are in Africa Cup of Nations qualifying, with Ghana and Zambia taking on Angola and Lesotho respectively.

Setting out City’s plans for the international break, Rodgers said: “(Players not called up) will have a breather. It’s really important. It’s been a real long period of games. I think it’s important for the players to mentally recover and refresh.

“When we go away, it’s normally going away together. A lot of the players are away, but we may well do that (take a group trip) when they all get back for a few days. In the first week, there will be rest and recovery mentally for the players, then we’ll get them back in, the other guys will join us, and we’ll be ready for the run-in.

“You can imagine it’s not nice and you’re losing games consecutively. We know what our task is between now and the end of the season. It’s about concentrating fully in the games and then we’ll get the points we need. We highlighted that in training and the players showed that (at Brentford).

“It’s a nice feeling to go away on the back of a good performance and a good result. We’ll get some players back after the international break, and then hopefully we’ve got a really strong squad to go into the last 11 games.”

As well as Maddison, Amartey, and Daka, there are 10 other senior City players in action. They are Danny Ward (Wales), Wout Faes, Timothy Castagne, Dennis Praet (all Belgium), Harry Souttar (Australia), Caglar Soyuncu (Turkey), Luke Thomas (England Under-21s), Papy Mendy (Senegal), Wilfred Ndidi and Kelechi Iheanacho (both Nigeria).

Brendan is secretly massing his infernal army through the hellish portal opened in the home changing rooms by the constant draining of Ricardo's blood into the abyssal plane.

One day Brendan...

One day...

No way they should be having time off based on recent results.

I understand that they might need a physical rest but get them doing light work and spending a lot of time in video analysis and mental coaching sessions.

I’m sure Brendan fancied a week off himself though…

Presumably his preparing powerpoints for his Spurs interview.

Don’t mind a bit of rest and recovery, mentally and physically it goes a long way, especially at this time of the season if things aren’t going your way and your heads scrambled. Don’t agree with players training with outside personal trainers or fitness coaches full stop, let alone in season. Also going to Dubai for a camp? Why? You can achieve everything you need here, your just adding more factors in to managing the group for no reason.

The back 4 should be studying how to keep a defensive line! The amount of times our offside trap has been sprung recently is worrying....

Warm weather training for failure. It must be brilliant being at our club.

Is the new training ground not good enough now?

Total Joke.

Should be spending the time writing apology letters to the ST holders.

Rotten to the core at the moment.

problem with our lot, is rest and recovery just means going off on a rich boi holiday.

It’s not a stay at home with the family and rest up, it’ll be the standard golf trips and drinking for most of them.

Or introducing themselves to each other so they'll know who they should be passing the ball too.

I can understand a couple days off, especially at this point of the season, however this is a part of the problem too soft, professionally, and collectively for those not on international duty, there is work to do, it's all a bit soft.

I welcome this. A couple of days away to help get these players in the right mindset for what is now crunch time.

Same. I don't quite get the uproar.

It's probably only a few days anyway.

that’s just concentration or lack of it. I think they need some brain training like wordle. At least we won’t get any more training ground injuries if they’re focused on mind.

Hopefully the players are having a nice rest up. Just like when they were rested for the Blackburn game and came back fully fired up and re-charged against Southampton…

How many are actually left to do something of substance if the 13 away make up the majority of any given starting 11?

Barnes & Ricardo away working with personal trainers
Tielemens, Justin, Kristianson, Bertrand & Evans - recovering from injury

So leaves 2GK, KDH, Soumare, Tete & Vardy now wouldn't that be a productive week bouncing 6 players up & down a hill all day like the good old days, f me this forum

This reminds me of that scene in ROCKY III

when balboa goes back to basics training in a cold cruddy gym sweating his balls off while Drago is in a state of the art complex getting drugged and turned into some insane cyborg.

Moral of the story is it’s all mental strength going into these final games now. How much do these players want to save their careers and keep the club up. They have the ability and the tools do they have the will to perform to the max every game/ not make any mistakes/ score goals from every chance created/ defend with their lives when under pressure/ play to final whistle?

That my friends is what it’s gonna take.

IF Vardy really means the great escape season is his favourite moment than he should give the final team talk. He knows what it takes and should instill it in the rest of the bunch. We are at war now and fighting for our premier league survival and not tarnishing all that we as a club have achieved since 2015. Just do it for Vichai even!
