If he’d been called up to England while playing for Ipswich or Leeds, we’d all be calling Southgate and idiot and a shill.

no, you'd be amazed that useless **** had looked outside the top 5 teams

People used to slaughter Southgate for picking Tyrone Mings when Villa were in relegation battles. Of course he’d get slaughtered by picking a Championship player.

I thought it was a bit odd when some people seemed to be turning their noses up at signing a full England international, but assumed they must know what they’re on about.

Do you really think we’ll be able to hang on to him, even if we do get promotion?

I think I was a little surprised with the transfer, and was only going on the negativity around him stemming from Spurs fans.

In hindsight that was due to him struggling in the more attritional style of Mourinho and the Conte.

In contrast he fits Maresca's style perfectly and is showing the kind of form he did under Pochettino.

He's done so right from the start of the season. I expected his tidy passing but what surprised me the most was his half turns and driving forward with the ball. He really does create so much forward movement. He really is the heart beat of the team.

Genuinely think it's England's loss that he's in the Championship as this'll mean he's overlooked and England haven't really got another player with his skillset. He, like our side, is far too good for this division.

This.

Especially whilst Southgate insists on playing two 6’s - be it Henderson or Phillips alongside Rice.

People moan when those two are picked, but when you look into it Winks is genuinely the next best 6 this country has after those (If you even class Henderson as a 6) our depth is awful there, and unfortunately Winks will never get a call up whilst playing in the Championship.

Never mind 'won't get called up whilst playing in the championship', Philips gets called up whilst not playing at all. Ludicrous

Like I said, for the above reasons. Like it or not he’s the second best defensive midfielder the country has, and the alternatives are shocking.

Guys. He’s having a great season but some seriously over the top posts on here.

13th best dm in the world? Don’t be daft You obviously can’t compare stats in the second tier directly to the top tier given the difference in opposition.

He’s been great for us and I think there’s a good chance he makes the step up assuming we get promoted next season, although I don’t think it’s a certainty, but he shouldn’t be anywhere near in the England squad right now.

Totally uncomparable for a starter with Leeds as they're nowhere near as good as us. It's like comparing Leeds with Plymouth. He won't be called up for England because he's in the Championship and the fact he's had to drop into it but I maintain England don't really have another player with his skillset in midfield.

This isn't some upcomer who has only played at this level. He's played for England before. It's not unreasonable at all to suggest he could get back into it - it just won't happen this year.

If we describe the position as "deep lying midfielder" it gives another perspective.

Not so long ago that would've described Pirlo. Not the most efficient defensive tackler!

It depends how you approach the game. If you want to protect Maguire and his marauding forward moves, you need a more defensive midfielder. And Southgate prefers 2 of them!

It's instructive that Maresca doesn't play any stereotypical DMs. And more amazingly has transformed Ndidi, but that's another topic!

If your deep lying midfield can retain possession and distribute the ball. Then do you need your stereotypical DM?

This guy is the one signing where I have to hold my hands up. Wasn’t that bothered about it at all, however he is literally our main man. Absolutely unreal and credit to enzo for shaping our whole team around him. Also seems like such a great guy. I love him so so much. I’m actually close to tears typing this.

Maybe I am simply misreading some posts,on Winks England potential…

nomatter how bias,I can get,I don’t want Winks near the England squad,as good as he his…He ain’t Declin Rice,Foden, neither that wonderful mutant turtle, playing for Madrid…There really are 2-3 better choices than Winks.

That is not to say he wouldn’t do a good job,but he is behind others…

And if Leicester fans can’t see that….then I despair for this forum..

Not sure why you have used Foden or Bellingham as comparisons, they do not play in his position. As others have already said there is Rice, Phillips & Henderson and that is it in terms of English players in his position, it's not unreasonable at all if he was to be considered (obviously he won't be whilst in the Championship but I can see him definitely see  a world where he is called up a few months after we are back in the prem)

I was talking around an all alround midfield, not one for one,but the needs of a top International side that will be delivering for next summer, including this seasons new boys, deserving earning their chances from this season performances..So though I could mention names,I want to let this run of this season choose them.

If Winks carries this into next season, agree he become obvious & potential automatic contender.

But like I said No way a consideration until September next year…IMO.

Slightly different player, but surely he's ahead of Mason Mount? lol

He is a Premier League midfielder playing in the Championship and credit to the club for getting him in.

He will become a bit more average next season assuming we go up, but would still expect him to be a consistent cog.

Would be surprised if he made the England squad again, certainly won't happen playing in the Championship.

More than good enough to get us out of the championship..

Out of possession, he will struggle for us in the PL with the role he plays.

That's the issue.

Clearly a system player, excels in this style in these conditions.

Another question if he can do the same in Prem.

Southgate called up Kalvin Phillips when he was in the Championship. Its a position England have the least options in in my opinion. Winks has accomplished plenty in the game, he's proven at the highest level and a player Southgate was a huge admirer of.

I think his form right now puts him in with a shout, or should do anyway. As he's said himself, this is the most he's ever enjoyed playing football. Quite some statement that is.

Southgate also called up Mason Mount when he was in the championship at Derby as well. However, he overlooked Madison at the same time, as he "didn't have enough prem experience". The guy also called up Jake Livermore on multiple occasions, so you don't really know what on earth he'll do with midfielders, it's like he lives in a parallel world.
