There was an MOD representative in the radio today and he was asked, how do you know it's China and his answer, in not so many words, was, "it's exactly the sort of thing they would do."

All a bit racist if you ask me.

Why is that "racist"?

Maybe it is exactly the sort of thing they would do. As the Russians would do as well, potentially.

It was a joke.

But, "it's the sort of thing they would do!" is akin to saying Jews are in control of all the world banks, "because it's the sort of thing they would do!"

It's merely an expression of baseless accusation based on nothing and in no way whatsoever, proof.

I suspect that's because there isn't really an explanation, as such, for why people become so passionately attached to wild theories that have zero evidence base. It's not a rational or evidence-based position, so by definition defies explanation. It's a psychological phenomenon, not an intellectual one. As Monibot discusses in the article, some people seem to find emotional security in the idea that most of the bad things in the world are the result of a secretive cabal of (probably Jewish) villains whose influence extends everywhere but is impossible to pin down. Simple, all-encompassing theories are easier to digest, and therefore provide more immediate comfort, than complex reality.

Anyway, a really interesting article. Thanks for sharing it.

No worries.

I've only know one real person who is heavily invested in this sort of stuff, and whilst I haven't got a clue as to what exactly has made them go down this path, there are a few things about their life history and some of the choices they've made that do make them somewhat unusual and I imagine that's not a coincidence.

My psychologist missus would no doubt think this is a grotesque over-simplification but I'm often very cynical about people with very strong views about pretty much anything. Seems to me a lot of the time having these extreme positions is less about any conviction or actual belief and more about how taking them gives you entry to a club that you like the look of full of people that you relate to. It's the community and sense of belonging that draws people in a lot of the time, I suspect

Katie Price is set to be outrageous again by revealing the celeb who once raped her... thats way to get people to buy latest book . Whats the odds itll be another saville claim..

Maybe she was raped but why treat it like a big mystery to get people to buy her book. Its going to be someone i reckon whose passed away, as would she wanna risk being sued.

Hers a novel idea, why not report it to the police instead of revealing it in a Book and talking about it for publicity. Absolutely horrific if it happened to her but it is helping no one unless she reports it to the authorities.

I think there is a lot of truth in this.

A few years ago a study from Cambridge University found that people who tend towards extreme views may simply have brains that are wired differently. According to a Guardian article covering the study, researchers found that "people with extremist attitudes tended to think about the world in black and white terms, and struggled with complex tasks that required intricate mental steps". Another finding was that "people with tendencies towards extremism appeared to be not good at regulating their emotions, meaning they were impulsive and tended to seek out emotionally evocative experiences."

Seems plausible to me.

Brains that are wired differently, or badly?

I guess the question there is whether this is something where someone can train their mind away from such impulses. Mental training is certainly possible in some situations (eg CBT) but also certainly not in others (eg sexuality). I don’t know where this falls.

Now Natalie Elphicke MP has crossed the floor.

If you've been a Tory you shouldn't be allowed to stand for Labour at the General Election. She's been voting for vile Tory policies for five years - she's no socialist.

She's hideous. Standing down at the next GE though, so who knows what she's been offered.

The symbolism of the MP for Dover laying into Sunak however, with his fanatical small boats obsession,  is kinda delicious.

I would go further and say you shouldn’t be able to join another party midterm, either resign or be an independent.

It's not racist if what he means by "they" is the Chinese government or organisations "unofficially" financed by the Chinese government, though, is it?

I think the Chinese, Russian, Israeli and Saudi governments (purely for example, there are plenty more) are objectively evil. That doesn't make me racist towards Chinese, Russian, Israeli or Saudi people.

Got a couple of replies about my Astrazeneca post, sorry not been able to see them as the post has been deleted

Much like most of my posts about Top a few weeks back.

Let me guess. Vaccines bad.

That Natalie Elphicke is a disgrace. The House of Commons is a cesspit, we desperately need electoral reform.

Just that it had been pulled off the market!

Should get rid of FPTP, sadly never gonna happen.
