If Russell Martin proves all the 'Told You So' merchants wrong this season and we do get promoted, will they even be happy?

At this point I'm genuinely not sure

Said it on the pod this week in relation to what will he need to do to prove people wrong / be considered successful. Promotion is the bare minimum but I can see why some would still not be entirely convinced just at that and only if he got us challenging for top 6 of the Championship would he have silenced the critics.

I'd take the former as a starter and will happily go on record if he does get us up and i've set my stall out on him from May 2023 when he was first linked.

They certainly shouldn't be, but yet a section of our fanbase clearly feel the best way for them to voice their criticism of the manager/owners is to take it out on the team while they're trying to win matches.

It's not just the manager, owner and DoF that has taken the piss out of the fans for the last 5 years. The players have to cop their fair share of it.

It's not to suggest they're as at fault as the owner, but ultimately they couldn't beat 10 man Barnsley, they were beaten 4-0 at home by Oxford, they've given the fans relegation in 3 of the last 4 years etc.

How many of our current matchday squad were involved in those relegations? Maybe two or three out of eighteen? Do you really think it’s fair to make a team of young players carry the can for failures they had nothing to do with?

That's not what he's saying.

We could win the next 3 league games 3-1 but people will still focus criticism on the manager for the goal we concede from a misplaced pass.

We saw it this week after a meaningless fixture. Heavy criticism for the goal we conceded because some people have made it abundantly clear they hate the style of play. Yet that style of play is not given any credit when we score 6 times because it's largely dismissed as poor goalkeeping and 'it's only their u21s'.

As the players that were involved. Fortunately, most of them have moved on.

You could say this about the manager too, who is equally relatively new (To us).

I don't agree entirely with what he says. We have a young team that needs time to get. The fact that we don't have that time is annoying and inconvenient, but I don't see how it is avoidable. It's definitely not insurmountable.

All of them were involved in us failing to beat 10 man Barnsley.

If he won his first 3 games everyone would praise Martin. If he wins his next 3 the pressure will ease on him. he has only won 2 in 7! That is why the negative comments now. football has always been this way.

Yes criticize the goal conceded because we see the same thing every week. Same as under Brendan Rodgers and conceding from corners.

Can there not be a time where the defenders can go direct? and not play a risky pass that gives away a goal. If Martin adjusts the constant need to pass and amends this slightly, build up when you have time, when under pressure go direct. I think we will win more games that way. But to repeatedly give the same goal away, that is stubbornness. A good coach would change that.

I wouldn't hate the style of play if it worked, or seemed like it would

For me in order of priority;

Winning football

Pretty winning football

Pretty football

I saw the clip in The Guardian Football Weekly about it being somewhat of a culture war between traditional football fans and a Green Party voting Vegan with long hair and would like to add, as a leftie vegetarian, that's not true.

Also reminded me of this classic banner from Villa, think it was aimed at David O'Leary:

Your arguments seem to be based on what you want the manager to be rather than what he's shown either here or at his previous clubs.

'If we get promoted...' 'if we win our next 3 games 3-1...'

Can you get off your high horse until either of those things look like having the remotest chance of happening please?

Yes, they should have won the game on Saturday and it was extremely frustrating that they didn’t. But we have a young team who have only been playing together for a short time and they still created more than enough chances to win that game comfortably. Hopefully they’ll learn from that.

Over the past few seasons, it has been common to hear people say that if only the club got rid of all the lazy dross and focused on bringing through young players, the fans would get behind the team even if the results weren’t always there. Well, the dross have largely departed and we do have young team that includes several academy players—and yes, the results have been patchy. Yet a sizeable chunk of the fans have completely turned on the team rather than try to help them get through games by supporting them. I find that difficult to comprehend.

Ordinarily you're right, we should be getting behind this somewhat young team. But we're not in ordinary circumstances. We're in League 1 having had the club rip the piss out of us for 5 years.

Shit behaviour has to be called out. We cannot continually accept failure.

What I would say though is that the abuse towards the players has been minimal. Abuse is largely directed towards Martin, Rudkin and Aiyawatt (and rightly so).

Re. the part that i've put in bold; This is only an opinion formed by those who refuse to accept that King Power are the enemy of Leicester City. Nothing changes until they leave.

Because they know that those mistakes will cost us.

Fans have to realise that we need to be calling out shit behaviour and attitude.

We should be beating Fulham U21 reserves about 20-0 by the way.

Yes, I think he needs to follow in Pearson's exact footsteps when we were last in this division by winning it (or promotion as the bare minimum) and then finish in the top 6 in the Championship next season re the play offs, also like Pearson did (Kermorgant-gate!). For now though then anything less than promotion will not win any fans over and it will be doubtful if he'll be kept on if we miss out on even that..

One win against a poor Under 21 team and some seem to think he's on his way to being Alex Ferguson.

Let’s be honest win lose or draw every week we will see the words “…..against a poor [insert] side” written multiple times in a match day or post match thread, it’s lose lose for some posters as if they think the teams prime Man U?

So you're basically saying, "you lot will never be happy with the manager you never wanted."

I am aware of what's happened over the last 2 seasons but we're the biggest club, with the biggest wage budget and have spent the most money in League One, we SHOULD be prime Man U of League One.

I wouldn't even say the fanbase has has high expectations but maybe we should be like you and lower them even more.

I’m behind Russell Martin.

We’ve been ****ed around for the last few seasons with no consistency, constantly changing managers and a team that seemed to have completely lost its spirit. Too many players who looked like they’d checked out, with no real leaders.

I actually liked what Enzo was building. He gave us an identity and ticked a lot of boxes, but when he left, he left us in a pretty shit position at the worst possible time. The managerial choices since haven’t helped either.

I don’t particularly like Russell’s style either. I’d much rather see old school, fast, aggressive, get it out wide and get crosses in. But football has moved on.

I actually like this group now and think Russell is building a better team spirit. We need stability. Changing manager again now would just be more of the same.

Give him time, give the team time. I genuinely think we can go up this season and be challenging at the top/play-offs next year. Just be patient for once.

I dislike Martin and his style but I’ve also come around to this way of thinking, we need to stick with a manager for a while now. I’d prefer it wasn’t him, but it is, and the players seem to like him. Before the Oxford game there was a seeming change in attitude and positivity around the place.

Obviously that game happened and there is no going back now, but I do wonder how much different the outlook might be on here now if we drew that game, for example, rather than what I would argue is the worst result in the history of our club.

Green shoots compared to the horror show of the past few seasons, I just wish we’d stop passing it around the back so much when you have McCarthy involved, no harm in mixing it up at trying to hit Riis ~30% of the time imo. If anything it might make teams more reluctant to press us so high and aggressively to avoid getting caught out by the direct ball.

Completely agree….. consistency and team/fan spirit it is key
