We are now saying players that are 27 are on the decline?

Not on the decline, apart from a purple patch he has always been rubbish according to Swansea fans.

When fans say you can't rely on academy players because some will turn out to be rubbish they mean players like Cullen.

Not saying he'll be a great signing, I wouldn't be signing him, but 27 should be when attacking players are entering their prime.

He's either blocking Braybrooke, Page, Alves or Evans, Hutchinson, Otchere.

Either way even if he was not blocking someone, the description from the Swansea fan is there: non entity as a player.

He won't be blocking Braybrooke or Page because they play in centre mid - Cullen doesn't

He won't be blocking Alves because he is much more likely to be played out on the wing, probably becomes first choice left winger if Mavididi leaves - if anyone is blocking him it is Chaplin anyway

Evans and Hutchinson will benefit a lot more from going out on loan - Evans is seemingly struggling to get properly into the squad and Hutchinson would benefit from playing every week somewhere

As much as Otchere has impressed in pre-season we cannot go into a full season with just him as a striker - we were always going to sign a new one

Swansea fans have spoken to tonight says he’s no 10. Literally called him Okazaki.

They're wrong.

He had a stint playing for Wales at #10 and scored a couple of goals. Then had a stint for us at 10# and scored something like eight goals in six weeks. That was nearly two years ago, and people have been confidently declaring that he's actually a midfielder ever since despite him coming nowhere near replicating that performance when he's played in midfield. He is first and foremost a striker, and that's where he's spent the vast majority of his career.

If he does end up playing midfield you can't have Chaplin, Cullen, Braybrooke and Page all in the same team. 1 or 2 will have to sit on the bench as a best case scenario.

Either way even if he was not blocking someone, the description from the Swansea fan is there: non entity as a player.

So we shouldn't sign any players whatsoever because they will block someone?

It shows we have learnt nothing.

We have sign Chaplin on a 3 year contract, who may not be good enough on our return to the Championship so we are going to be stuck with him for 3 years (BCDR Mark 2)

Cullen a sort of CF come attacking player signed for money at 27 on probably a 3 year contract who isn't good enough for Swansea, probably end up leaving on a free in 3 years. (Ayew Mark 2)

If we spend money it need to be on someone who we can develop and sell on as a asset.

Play devil advocate why do we need both then?

We need a proper CF, who could grow with us.

I would have no issues if he was genuinely good like Ballard or a good attacking midfielder, wherever Cullen actually plays.

As it stands I don't think he is a better player than Evans, Hutchinson, Page or Braybrooke.

Therefore he is just a blocker.

No just don't sign players with no resale value, especially when we are paying a fee.

Or players with no pace or physicality.

I mean he quite obviously wouldn't mind it if they were clearly very good, I think it's a bit more signing very meh players who could potentially start or come on over some kids we have

Imagine this forum back when we signed Huth , he’s blocking Liam Moore’s progress

When Konchesky was signed, he’s blocking Jeff Schlupp at full back

Gallagher/Wellens back in the day , their blocking Andy King’s progress

Every squad needs a mix of youth and good pro’s - it’s clear with the length of time they are taking to get players in and judging from what RM has said, it sounds like they’re clearly doing their due diligence to ask and reference the characters of Chaplin, McCarthy, Cullen and Adebayo are as well as the footballers,

The last few years we’ve had shocking senior pros! I’m half of the opinion that if the likes of Braybrooke, Alves had come through in the last two years they’d be completely different players having to train and watch how unprofessional their fellow older pro’s were, we’ll never know but hopefully this is the perfect moment for them surrounded by good pro’s

Hopefully this is the start of us doing proper due-diligence with future signings, bringing in the right type of characters that want to come in rather than just pick up a pay packet.

We weren't in an absolute mess financially back then though, and we didn't have the amount or level of talent coming through either.

Hopefully we sign a more natural striker too. So we have options, and maybe have Otchere as 4th option.

People need to accept we are never going to see a new link and be happy with it, otherwise they wouldn't be joining us. Ifs and buts, but if we sign him from a league 1 team we are probably thinking differently.

I want as many of the youngsters to be involved as possible, but we can't just have them. We are in desperate need up front.

We are skint the only thing keeping the club alive is selling players, we are going to soon be in the position we have no one to sell.

We have to develop are own to sell on or bring in players to sell.

Cullen has no upside.

Tbf anyone with any common sense would just go back and look at where Liam Cullen played under Russell Martin at Swansea and would quickly realise he's being brought in as a #9 and not an #8.

He better be one hell of a finisher.

He got 8 in 41 under Russell. :appl:

Fair point, but this isn’t overloading for a position for the sake of it in my opinion, this is someone who’s played 200 games of senior football, previously as a striker too.

I think he’ll play there for us, which if our front line is Adebayo, Cullen and Otchere then I’m a lot more confident than I was a week ago with just Otchere

did he play a few on the wing(towards the end of 22/23 as stated already within the thread), but its nice to have a play who can play a number of positions

I'm not moaning about someone actually playing over others anyway, but if we're paying money for someone then there's likely other options available

Correct, there’s a tough balance between youth sales and also getting enough results to get back to the championship

If we play 8-9 academy lads that aren’t ready and finish 12th, we’re done.

The likes of Chaplin, Cullen, Adebayo should help us get results, maybe to the detriment of certain youth players ( Evans and Carr are the two that spring to mind for me) but at this moment in time we don’t know if they’re good enough there’s no evidence, with the above stated there is
